We are less than a week away from the theatrical release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With the release inching closer, more photos and videos continue to appear showcasing new characters from the movie. Throughout the first trailers and images, fans have gotten many looks at K-2SO. The droid voiced by Alan Tudyk is getting plenty of love and, based on posters and trailers, looks to be a major character in the movie.
Other Star Wars movies have made droids a central part of the story, and many have become fan-favorites, like R2-D2, BB8 and C-3PO. Interestingly enough, Tudyk was worried about his character being funny and witty, and annoying fans like Jar Jar Binks famously did. Disney has also made K-2SO a big part of the marketing push with exclusive items resembling the droid.
Now, new photos from Entertainment Weekly highlight some of the new aliens and droids that will be featured in the highly anticipated movie. One of the characters in the images is Weeteef Cyubee, a member of Saw Gerrera’s (Forest Whitaker) team. The character who resembles a piranha is played by Warwick Davis. Star Wars fans know Davis best as Wicket, the loveable Ewok in Return of the Jedi. Davis also received a bit part in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Wollivan.
Looking similar to fan favorite Admiral Ackbar is Admiral Raddus, a Mon Calamari. While Ackbar was a red skinned version of the Mon Calamari, Rogue One will feature new versions with Raddus, a blue version and at least two Albino versions of the Mon Calamari. Interestingly enough, Admiral Raddus is being voiced by Stephen Stanton, who has performed various voices for Star Wars content before. Stanton’s voice can be heard on animated series like Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and also in many Star Wars video games.
Other characters in the new photos may be new, but most look to resemble old Star Wars aliens and droids. Take Beezer Fortuna for example, as the new alien bears a striking resemblance to Bib Fortuna, Jabba the Hutt’s consigliere. Then there’s Moroff, a new hairy creature that the creators even called a cross between a Wookiee and a Wampa. New droid C2-B5 looks like a black painted version of R2-D2, bearing that color to represent the Empire that owns him.
It has already been announced that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will not have a sequel. The events in the movie will take the Star Wars Universe right up to the beginning of Star Wars: A New Hope. This leaves fans little time and likely no more movie appearances to get acquainted with these new droids and aliens.
The excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story continues to heat up. Expectations call for the movie to gross between $280 and $350 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
