Star Wars fans are only a few weeks away from seeing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first in a planned series of bi-annual spinoff features set in the Star Wars universe but outside the continuum of the main series. There has been plenty of promotion for the movie to date, yet (arguably) most of the film’s major set pieces remain (for the time being) unknown to audiences.
Rogue One star Felicity Jones has now made an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, where she unveiled a fresh clip from the Star Wars movie. Appearing on the popular late night talk show as part of the Rogue One‘s promotional tour, Jones talked about her experiences in playing new character Jyn Erso in the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff. Rogue One tells the story behind the Rebel mission to steal the plans to the Death Star – plans that will ultimately be passed by Princess Leia to R2-D2 in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
In the exclusive new clip (which begins at roughly the 3:09 mark of the interview video above), Jyn Erso and her Rebel comrades take on a group of Stormtroopers in an impromptu shootout; climaxing with the shooting of a droid briefly mistaken for one of their allies. The full context of the scene, in terms of where it falls in the narrative of Rogue One, is not immediately clear.
While unmistakably set in the Star Wars universe, the scene has a gritty desaturated atmosphere and makes use of immersive handheld cinematography; establishing that the film aims to make good on the “Star Wars Story” branding’s intended goal of not only telling different types of stories within the continuity but also breaking (where necessary) from the familiar tone and aesthetic of the main films. The overall impression is that this looks more like a grounded war movie than a space opera, as befits the military-espionage storyline.
Following reports over the summer of extensive reshoots (with Tony Gilroy being paid a handsome sum for helping out) and confirmation that composer Michael Giacchino had a short period of time to complete the film’s score, buzz around Rogue One is pretty strong right now and ticket pre-sales reflect that. A young Han Solo film will serve as the next Star Wars spinoff film after Rogue One; meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate about what the third spinoff movie set in a galaxy far, far away will be (see those Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film rumors, for instance).
