If the Star Wars franchise has taught us anything, it's that every hero needs a few friends to help them win the day. In this year's standalone story/A New Hope prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is a Rebel tasked with stealing the plans for the original Death Star from the fearsome Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) - a mission that could put her in the crosshairs of Darth Vader himself.

Fortunately, Jyn isn't alone in her quest; also helping her are a ragtag group of Rebels including Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), and the android K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). Now, Disney has unveiled a set of character posters for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story featuring each of the main heroes, as well as Krennic, captioned with brief (but revealing) character descriptions.

Speaking to Screen Rant recently, Jones described the team in Rogue One as a "motley crew," all of whom have been through difficult experiences in their lives, and these character descriptions highlight the diversity of their backgrounds and specialities - from Donnie Yen's warrior monk to Diego Luna's intelligence officer. Notably, both Bodhi Rook and K-2SO are characters who used to work for the Empire, but have since changed side, so it's possible that they have a pre-existing relationship.

The specifics of most of these characters' background remain a mystery for now, but with luck director Gareth Edwards has been able to craft an effective ensemble story in Rogue One, with each hero given their own chance to shine. Barring any change in plans, Rogue One isn't setting up for a sequel, which means that the stakes are pretty high; with this being a war movie, there's a good chance that not everyone will make it out alive.
