After Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and its numerous Star Wars Rebels Easter eggs, Star Wars fans are eager to see how the remainder of the show’s third season continues to build to the events of the first Star Wars spin-off film. Wasting no time, fans were rewarded by the appearance of Saw Gerrera in the Star Wars Rebels midseason premiere, with Forest Whitaker reprising his Rogue One role to voice the character.
However, Rebels returned to focusing on its own corner of the Star Wars universe in the most recent episode, “Warhead”. Now, the crew of the Ghost sets off to continue building their coalition against the Empire, and it appears as if they plan to use Sabine’s birthright, and the darksaber, to enlist the aid of the Mandalorians.
In the preview for Rebels’ next episode, “Trials of the Darksaber,” Kanan trains Sabine to wield the darksaber in preparation for an unspecified task. She’s fairly adept for a non-Jedi, although Kanan’s lack of sight may play a factor. We haven’t had an opportunity to see him fully exhibit his dueling skills since he was blinded by Darth Maul at the end of the last season. Kanan is far harsher on Sabine than he usually appears when training Ezra, telling her she should just quit, but that only emboldens the Mandalorian: “I don’t quit! I never quit!” Watch the clip above.
As fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series will remember, the Darksaber holds a very sacred place with certain Mandalorians, giving any who wield it authority, as we saw when Darth Maul dueled Pre Vizsla for control of Death Watch. With Sabine being a member of house Vizsla, and now in possession of the Darksaber, it looks like she’s about to attempt to gain the following of some Mandalorians as well. As we learned recently, the Darksaber is a one of a kind blade with a long history dating back to the first Mandalorian Jedi, Ta Vizsla, presumably an ancestor of Sabine’s.
Kanan has been working alongside Sabine for longer than he’s been working with Ezra, so he’d likely know by now if she inherited her predecessor’s Force sensitivity, but that doesn’t mean she can’t wield the blade with skill like Pre Vizsla before her. The trailer for the second half of season 3 showed the next few episodes will be jam packed, and “Trials of the Darksaber” looks like it will follow suit.
Star Wars Rebels season 3 continues Saturday with “Trials of the Darksaber” @8:30pm on Disney XD.
