Star Wars enjoyed a banner year in 2015, across all forms of media. The Marvel Star Wars comic series that launched in the beginning of the year have repeatedly topped the sales charts and the novel “Star Wars: Aftermath” debuted at #4 on the New York Time Bestsellers list. Most importantly, Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens has dominated in theaters. The film has shattered record after record and successfully reigniting the excitement for future Star Wars films.
Fans will have to wait another year to see Star Wars return to theaters with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. For the continuation of Finn and Rey’s story, there’s a two year waiting period. However, Star Wars fans shouldn’t despair. January 20th sees the return of the canonical animated series Star Wars Rebels. The series’ midseason premiere promises to be an important episode, introducing another major legacy character to the series.
Princess Leia Organa will be making her first appearance in Rebels on January 20th, 2016, in an episode titled “A Princess in Lothal”. The episode will see Leia journeying to Lothal, the planet where the series’ small group of rebel fighters are based, to deliver ships for the rebel fleet. Unfortunately, things begin to go awry when an unexpected Imperial lockdown is put into effect.
Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni explains the choice to bring the iconic character to the show.
“We thought we had an opportunity to show [Leia] learning to be a leader, experimenting with the personality that becomes the stronger, more resolute character you see in ‘A New Hope.’ One of the complex challenges of depicting Leia in ‘Rebels’ is that we have to remind the audience that at this point, she is part of the Empire. She doesn’t believe in the Empire, but she is acting the part, almost a double agent.”
Carrie Fisher will not be providing the voice for the character in the episode. Instead, it will feature the voice of Julie Dolan, who voices Leia in the mobile game Star Wars: Uprising. It was additionally confirmed that this will be Leia’s sole appearance in the second season, but it’s still unknown if she could return in season 3.
With the successful introduction of characters like Ashoka Tano and Darth Vader earlier in the series, it seems like an obvious choice to bring another major character into the show for its midseason premiere. Of all the characters introduced in the original trilogy, Leia makes the most sense for inclusion in Rebels.
At the beginning of A New Hope, the character’s involvement with the Rebellion is taken as a given. This is largely due to her family’s opposition to the Empire, but the upcoming episode will allow the creators to explore her personal convictions. The revealed plot promises to add a layer of political intrigue to the character, while maintaining the excitement and momentum of the series. Leia is already a fascinating character throughout the films and her inclusion in Rebels can only benefit the series and supplement the character’s arc throughout the newest Star Wars film trilogy.
