One of the biggest reveals before the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the realization that a character from the animated properties would be making an appearance. This came in the form of Saw Gerrera making his live-action debut as he was played by Forest Whitaker in the film. Previously, Gerrera had appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he was voiced by Andrew Kishino. Since Whitaker brought him to life on the big screen, fans of the character began to wonder if he could appear on Disney and Lucasfilm's other animated show, Star Wars Rebels.

Fans' suspicions were confirmed shortly after the release of Rogue One, when a poster unveiled that Gerrera would be making an appearance at some point during this season of Rebels. Since that point, Disney has released a video explaining why they made the decision to bring Saw back, confirming that it would be Whitaker who now provided the voice. With the mid-season break almost over for the animated series, Disney has revealed a new promo for the upcoming episode that heavily features the animated and live-action version of the Rebel extremist.

Disney XD released the promo for the two-part arc that Gerrera will be involved in, "Ghosts of Geonosis," and it combines footage from Rogue One with that of Rebels to create a Gerrera focused teaser. The promo (shown above) begins to lay out some of the plot that could be involved with these two episodes, but it is clear that Gerrera is trying to learn more about the Empire's ultimate weapon.

Star Wars Rebels - Saw Gerrera in season 3

The inclusion of Gerrera is not only a great way to bridge Clone Wars and Rebels together, but really bring all the animated properties together with the movies. Since the release of Rogue One, viewers have been able to identify a number of Easter eggs that connect Rebels and Rogue One, most of which have been officially confirmed.

It should be interesting to see how big of a role Gerrera has in his two episode arc or how it could set up the events of Rogue One, giving Rebels watchers some extra backstory on Saw and his deteriorating relationship with the Rebellion. As Rebels moves closer and closer to the events of Rogue One, fans should stay on the look out for further connections to the first anthology film or the original trilogy. Rogue One hints towards a few members of the Ghost crew making it to these events, but how they get to that point remains to be seen.

Star Wars Rebels season 3 will continue January 7th, 2017 on Disney XD.
