When it was announced that Star Wars Rebels was going to be taking place sometime in the years between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, fans assumed there would be some kind of tie-ins to the Original Trilogy featured throughout the series. But to its credit, Star Wars Rebels has managed to include multiple different character cameos and appearances in surprisingly creative ways most of the time, from Lando's interactions with the Ghost Crew all the way to Princess Leia's. That's, of course, not to mention the callbacks to The Clone Wars that Dave Filoni and co. have managed to slip into the Rebels stories, including the return of Ahsoka Tano in the Rebels second season.

But even with all of the other cameos and tie-ins that Rebels has managed to include up until this point, none quite stack up to the confirmed appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi later this season. Revealed in the Rebels midseason teaser trailer, the show will bring back the beloved Jedi Master in a rematch against Darth Maul (Sam Witwer) that fans have been waiting years to see.

Now, it should be noted that outside of that, not much is known about Obi-Wan's upcoming appearance in the season, and so far, the show's creative execs and cast members haven't been very forthcoming with information surrounding the return either. However, a brand new teaser trailer for Rebels did make its premiere on Disney XD recently (H/T Tumblr user Raikai22), which includes a slightly longer look at the third fight between Obi-Wan and Maul. Check it out for yourself down below:

There's a lot packed into that teaser trailer, including a look at Mon Mothma's appearance in the second half of the season, and a brief shot at another, mysterious red lightsaber-wielding character. But, obviously, nothing is quite as awe-inspiring or exciting as the final shot. Teasing the very beginning of the duel between Obi-Wan and Maul, the rematch feels like something that's been in the works it feels like ever since Obi-Wan first defeated the dark force-user on Naboo at the end of The Phantom Menace.

To Dave Filoni's credit also, he and the rest of the Star Wars creative team have found some truly extraordinary ways to keep Darth Maul's storyline and existence going in the Star Wars universe. For years fans thought that he had truly died at the end of The Phantom Menace, before he was brought back unexpectedly in The Clone Wars, where he went on to take over the entire planet of Mandalore, kill the love of Obi-Wan's life, and then engage in a 2-on-1 fight with Darth Sidious. So suffice it to say, the rivalry between Maul and Obi-Wan has become one of the more interesting and longest-running in Star Wars history over the years, and one that fans can likely expect to come to a glorious, action-packed end later this year.

Star Wars Rebels season 3 continues next Saturday with ‘Secret Cargo’ @8:30pm on Disney XD.
