By all accounts, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been a huge hit for Lucasfilm and Disney. After the overwhelming success of The Force Awakens, many wondered if a standalone Star Wars film could come anywhere close to the success level as the return to the Skywalker Saga. Lucky for us all, Rogue One not only won over fans and critics in equal measure, but has done well at the box office. Continuing to rake in money long after its premiere, the movie has now reached over $500 million domestically and broken the $1 billion mark globally.
Through tying into the vast Star Wars universe already in existence, both on screen and TV, the movie was able to fill in the gaps of the story we thought we knew and traffic on plenty of nostalgia. Even better, it managed to craft a compelling story full of brand new characters. While fans are bummed they may never see the cast of the movie again, the film’s gut-punch of an ending made for some amazing cinema. Despite their deaths, though, people are hungry to learn more about the heroes of the film. We’ve already seen Saw Gerrera pop up on Rebels, further connecting the show to Rogue One, and now it looks as if we’ll learn more about his time with Jyn Erso.
Thanks to Making Star Wars, we now know Disney Publishing Worldwide will be releasing a book titled Star Wars: Rebel Rising that will focus on Jyn’s time training under Saw and her ascension as a Rebel. Check out the cover below.
Written by Beth Revis, the book will be targeted more at young adults and will flesh out the gap in Jyn’s story between her parents being murdered and her being rescued from prison by the Rebel Alliance. During that time, we’ll see her traveling around with Saw and learning his particularly violent brand of revolution. Below, you can read the official description for the book.
“When Jyn Erso was five years old, her mother was murdered and her father taken from her to serve the Empire. But despite the loss of her parents she is not completely alone—Saw Gerrera, a man willing to go to any extremes necessary in order to resist Imperial tyranny, takes her in as his own, and gives her not only a home but all the abilities and resources she needs to become a rebel herself.
Jyn dedicates herself to the cause—and the man. But fighting alongside Saw and his people brings with it danger and the question of just how far Jyn is willing to go as one of Saw’s soldiers. When she faces an unthinkable betrayal that shatters her world, Jyn will have to pull the pieces of herself back together and figure out what she truly believes in…and who she can really trust.”
While the blurb doesn’t reveal anything we couldn’t have already surmised, it’s still exciting knowing that the characters from the film can live on in some way. Though their future may already be written, each member of the Rogue One crew has a lot of backstory that could be delved into. While it’s uncertain if that will ever happen on film, say in the upcoming Han Solo prequel, there’s a strong possibility books, comics, and TV will give us more insight. In fact, the novelization of Rogue One already gave us a number of answers and bits of information the film didn’t. Hopefully, Lucasfilm will continue fleshing out our new favorite heroes across their media.
Star Wars: Rebel Rising will release May 2nd.
