Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope turns 40 this year following its original release in 1977. The film is highly regarded as one of the best in the Star Wars franchise history (as well as one of the best sci-fi flicks of all time), and of course was the very first entry into the Star Wars series, paving the way for all of those that came after it – and those that are still to come! Introducing the world to a slew of new characters played by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and more, those behind the film could never have known the huge success that the movie would spawn.
With news that a 4K restoration of A New Hope could be released at some point this year also comes a slew of information about various celebrations by different companies In celebration of the 40th anniversary, Hasbro have this week unveiled a whole line of new toys and merchandise; including, a brand new Monopoly set and selection of Black Series figurines.
Five highly detailed figures coming in at 3.75 inches a piece have been unveiled, showcasing Darth Vader, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia in all their glory and movie-real design. Each figure comes with a double-sided backdrop and character-specific accessory, allowing fans to recreate their favorite moments from A New Hope 40 years after the iconic scenes were brought to the big screen. A centerpiece figure collection subtitled ‘Dramatic Moments’ will also be coming to fans (see the gallery below), featuring some of the franchise’s most iconic scenes enhanced with both light and sound effects.
The Carrie Fisher figure will of course come as a very welcome surprise to those who were left devastated by Fisher’s passing on December 27, 2016. What may be a little shocking however is the lack of characters (including Leia) available as tokens in the new Monopoly game. Following the controversy that took place when The Force Awakens’ Monopoly set hit shelves without a Rey token, you would have thought that Hasbro would be quick to put a Princess Leia amongst the six tokens available. Instead, she’s front-and-center on the board game’s packaging.
Aside from the figures and Monopoly set, an incredibly detailed Obi-Wan Kenobi FX Lightsaber is also coming to fans featuring a quality metal hilt, built-in accelerometer, light effects and classic battle-clash sounds. Each will come with its own clear display stand, but will require three 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries in order to work to its full potential.
Both the Monopoly Star Wars 40th Anniversary Edition Game ($29.99) and the five 3.75 inch Black Series figures ($14.99 each) will be available starting Spring 2017. Meanwhile, the Black Series centerpiece will retail at $49.99 and will be released in Fall 2017, along with the Black Series Force FX Lightsaber that will put you back $179.99.
