John Boyega may have let Leia's Star Wars: The Last Jedi fate slip, giving either the character or Carrie Fisher a proper send off. The Star Wars community received unexpected news near the end of 2016 that Fisher had passed away due to complications following a heart attack. While the immediate reaction for her family, friends, colleagues, and fans was to mourn the loss, questions quickly began to rise as to what this meant for the future of the franchise. Fisher finished filming The Last Jedi prior to her death, but was in line to have a larger role in Star Wars 9.

How Lucasfilm and Disney planned to rework the end of the trilogy has not yet been made clear, with suggestions running from digitally recreating her to recasting. Lucasfilm has made it clear they will not use a CGI version of Fisher in Episode IX, leaving some to wonder if Leia could now pass away at the end of The Last Jedi.

While speaking on Popcorn with Peter Travers (via WGTC), Boyega was asked about his working relationship with Fisher. But, in his answer, he may have revealed a bit more of information than intended. While he did not confirm Leia's fate either way, he did briefly mention the sendoff that The Last Jedi has in store.

This movie, it sends her off in a very amazing, amazing way. She’s still kept alive in this franchise. You know, that’s the beauty of it, she lives forever in a sense.

Carrie Fisher Princess Leia Star Wars

While this initially appears to be confirmation that Leia will not die at some point in The Last Jedi, these comments from Boyega are not directly addressing Leia. Travers' initial question that lead to this answer was in regards to Boyega's relationship with Fisher. This could ultimately mean that this answer is simply referring to Fisher's sendoff and her memory continuing to live on, but still leaving the door open for Lucasfilm to firmly close the door on Leia's story.

There is still no telling which story arc Lucasfilm has ultimately decided to give to Leia, but it is unlikely that these comments from Boyega are confirming Leia will indeed live on. Revealing this piece of information in such a nonchalant way would be quite surprising, especially considering the spoiler nature of it. Regardless of whether she lives or not, Leia's fate is a giant question fans are waiting to have answered. Considering the fact that this is something they never intended for, they could always not even address it in The Last Jedi.

If Episode IX was supposed to be Leia's time to shine, wrapping up her story in some fashion then could make more sense than the studio reworking the ending of director Rian Johnson's vision. After all, Episode IX did just get a new writer, so part of the rewrite process could be to fine tune Leia's sendoff in 2019 instead of in a few months. If she does live on, then Boyega's comments will be true, but if Leia does not survive The Last Jedi and the franchise continues on with her presence still being felt, then Boyega could be right as well. Either way, Boyega promises that the sendoff will be amazing.
