Star Wars: The Last Jedi will give fans more information on the character of Finn, where he came from and why he made the decision to escape from the First Order, says actor John Boyega. The upcoming eighth chapter in the Star Wars saga sees Finn recovering from the injuries he suffered at the hands of Kylo Ren, and going on a secret mission with the help of a mechanic named Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and a shady individual played by Benicio Del Toro.

After being featured heavily in the early trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the character of Finn the unmasked stormtrooper quickly became someone fans had a lot of curiosity about. In The Force Awakens we learned that Finn was serving the First Order under the silver-helmeted Captain Phasma, but after experiencing the horrors of battle he suddenly decided to flee the First Order and fly off with captured Resistance pilot Poe Dameron.

Speaking to EW, Boyega teased some of what The Last Jedi will reveal about Finn and his life before becoming a stormtrooper. It seems the movie will give some information about Finn's origins but won't necessarily delve deeply into the character's background. When asked if the movie would tell us something about Finn's family, Boyega said:

“Yeah, definitely. But it’s not explored in depth in Episode VIII. But he definitely has a past that is troubled. … I don’t know how all that’s going to play out.”

The one question the movie will address, at least in a small way, is why Finn suddenly decided to flee from the First Order after Kylo Ren ordered him and the other stormtroopers to massacre the villagers of Taunul (in the opening moments of Star Wars: The Force Awakens):

“We will learn more about his past and where he came from, and potentially why he made the decision [to escape] that he made. I’m also very curious. The question that needs to be answered is why he decided to leave as a stormtrooper in the first place. We will find out just a little bit more about him.”

One of the more striking and memorable images from The Force Awakens saw Finn's dying fellow stormtrooper touching his hand to Finn's helmet amid the carnage on Jakku and leaving three bloody trails with his fingers. The powerful moment seems to be what sets Finn on his path to stripping off the armor of the stormtrooper and hooking up with Poe Dameron to escape the First Order - a decision that ultimately leads Finn to meet Rey, and later Han Solo, setting his whole destiny in motion.

The lingering question from The Force Awakens was, who is the bloody stormtrooper and what was Finn's connection to him? From Boyega's comments, it seems we may get some answer as to the relationship between Finn and the other stormtrooper. We don't know much about Finn's backstory but we do know he was taken by the First Order as a child and made into a faceless instrument of terror. It's possible the other stormtrooper was a friend of Finn's from childhood, or maybe even a family member.

It doesn't sound like Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to tell us everything we may want to know about Finn, but it will apparently fill in his backstory a little bit, with the promise of more potential revelations in Star Wars IX.
