A new Star Wars animated TV show set during the High Republic is rumored to be in the works. With the end of the Skywalker Saga, Lucasfilm has spent the last year putting more of a focus on non-Star Wars movie content. Disney+ is currently enjoying the benefits of airing The Mandalorian and more live-action shows are in various stages of development; the Cassian Andor show is filming now and the Obi-Wan Kenobi's series starts in early 2021.

The beginning of next year is also when Lucasfilm Publishing will finally kick off what has been touted as a brand new era of storytelling for Star Wars. The long-awaited High Republic line of comics and novels will start to be released in early 2021 after a delay kept them from coming in 2020. The High Republic is set 200 years before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and focuses largely on new characters - although a younger Yoda will appear. This setting gives Star Wars a nearly blank canvas to explore and the original plan called for only the publishing side of Star Wars to have access to the High Republic.

Now, there is a rumor that Lucasfilm is expanding the reach of the High Republic. According to sources close to Cinelinx, Lucasfilm is currently developing three different animated Star Wars shows, in addition to The Bad Batch. Details on all three shows have yet to be revealed, but Cinelinx heard that one of them might be set during the High Republic. The possible High Republic series is said to be in the earliest stages of development, so there is no other information available at this time.

Star Wars - The High Republic

If this rumor is true, it will mark the latest change in Lucasfilm's stance on where High Republic content will come from. The original High Republic announcement said, "this period on the Star Wars timeline will not overlap with any of the films or series currently planned for production." The idea behind this was to give the creators of High Republic materials complete creative freedom and not have to worry about what movies or TV shows were doing. However, this stance has already changed with the announcement of a High Republic VR game. Instead of limiting the reach of the High Republic, it now looks like Lucasfilm could be planning for the High Republic to be an era explored throughout multiple forms of media.

Even though there hasn't been a single piece of High Republic content completely released, the concept holds a lot of promise for animation, and even live-action eventually. Due to how long animated projects can take to make, fans shouldn't expect to see this High Republic animated series anytime soon if it truly is in the earliest stages of development. Star Wars: The Bad Batch appears to be the current focus for animated content, and Star Wars has yet to have two ongoing animated projects. Unless The Bad Batch is only imagined as a one or two season show (like Star Wars: Resistance) or Lucasfilm increases the output of their animation teams, a High Republic Star Wars show could still be a few years away.
