This July features two of the biggest pop culture conventions of the year: Star Wars Celebration and San Diego Comic-Con 2016. As fans make their preparations to attend one (or, if they’re lucky, both), merchandisers are also making plans. Anyone familiar with the events know that exclusive products are available for a variety of properties, allowing people to splurge on souvenirs directly connected to their favorite franchises.
Hasbro always as a sizable presence at these conventions, taking the opportunity to display and tease their upcoming products that tie into the most anticipated film releases. Their crown jewel is arguably the Star Wars line, which has been a considerable moneymaker for years. Perhaps the premiere collection for a galaxy far, far away is the Black Series, which offers six inch action figures of a variety of characters from the movies and television shows. Two principal players from the saga are now getting this treatment, and will be available as exclusives at Celebration and SDCC.
Today, Hasbro announced details about the Black Series Obi-Wan Kenobi and Kylo Ren toys. The former will be at San Diego, while the latter is a Celebration exclusive. Both are packs that include numerous accessories. Kylo Ren comes with his famous crossguard lightsaber, a removable mask, Darth Vader’s melted helmet, a First Order banner and stand. The Obi-Wan figure features his lightsaber, a table, and a holographic Princess Leia – recreating the scene from A New Hope. After SDCC, a limited number of Kenobi figures will be available on HasbroToyShop.com. It will also be for sale at Fan Expo Canada this September. You can check out images of them below:
As one would expect, these are top-of-the-line action figures that showcase great detail. Each one has multiple points of articulation, meaning they can be set up in numerous poses inspired by their appearances in the films. Even better news is that they won’t set customers back financially all that much. The Kylo Ren toy runs for approximately $34.99, while the Obi-Wan costs $44.99. For collectors looking for cool items on a budget, these are nice options that would look great on any shelf.
It will be interesting to see what else Hasbro brings to both Celebration and SDCC. One would think that their main products already available will be highlighted. There’s an outside chance there might be some materials from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it also wouldn’t be out of the question for the company to wait until this year’s Force Friday to do a massive unboxing like they did in 2015. Hasbro has plenty of items out now, and there isn’t a rush to start pushing merchandise from the upcoming movie just yet.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to snagging these two exclusives of characters who left a very instrumental mark in the Star Wars universe. Whether you prefer the Light Side or the Dark, there’s something for everyone in these packs and either would be a worthwhile addition to anyone’s collection. People always want to bring part of the convention experience home with them, and these are an ideal way to do just that.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
