After bringing the franchise back to the big screen for the first time in several years with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney and Lucasfilm began their second round of new Star Wars adventures with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Fortunately, the film’s mostly positive reviews and $1 billion financial success seemed to prove once and for all that the fans’ desire to be transported to the Star Wars world went far beyond just the saga films. They won’t have to wait very long before they get to see another Star Wars spin-off film either, with the already announced young Han Solo anthology film set to hit theaters just five months after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December.
Directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller (22 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie) have been steadily filling out the film’s cast over the past few months, and yesterday, announced the beginning of principal photography with the first image of the young Han Solo movie’s main cast members together. Assembled in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, the excitement from both fans and the filmmakers themselves to get started on this newest Star Wars adventure was clear from the moment the image was released.
While the general plot and cast of characters in the film have already been revealed at this point, one of the key mysteries surrounding the young Han Solo movie still is the film’s title. For over two years now, the anthology film’s title has been a mystery, but according to Star Wars News Net, that mystery may be solved later this summer. Responding to a fan question on Twitter, SWNN claimed that they are hearing reports that the film’s title will be revealed during this year’s D23 Expo, which is set to run from July 14-16 in Anaheim, CA.
As always, make sure to take all of this with a grain of salt for the time being, since there hasn’t been any hints or even teases on Disney or Lucasfilm’s part regarding this possibility. But with that being said, D23 has become a go-to place for Disney to make some major announcements regarding their films; whether it be one of their animated/live-action originals, a Marvel film, or the latest addition to the Star Wars franchise. After all, the last D23 Expo in 2015 was where the studio chose to reveal the full cast and first image from Rogue One, along with announcing Colin Trevorrow as the director for Star Wars: Episode IX.
Hence, the studio announcing the official young Han Solo movie title at this year’s D23 certainly makes sense. However, with Star Wars Celebration set to happen in Orlando, FL this April, the studio could just as easily announce it there instead. The studio is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars at Celebration after all, so there’s almost certainly going to be some major announcements or releases made during the convention.
But regardless of when the actual announcement comes, Disney and Lucasfilm have proven time and time again that they have a clear strategy when it comes to these kinds of reveals, which makes it hard to know when exactly this news will come. Whether it ends up be during D23, Star Wars Celebration, or some other time, though, all fans can hope for is that it’ll offer at least some kind of new information about the standalone film – one currently being looked at as one of Disney’s riskiest Star Wars-related ventures yet.
