Boba Fett and Han Solo Movies Star Wars: Han Solo & Boba Fett Spinoff Films Revealed

The movie universe has broken wide open since the announcement that Disney purchased LucasFilm and plans to release new Star Wars movies – beginning with Star Wars Episode VII in 2015. Just yesterday came the news from top executives that standalone spinoff films were in the works as well, to fill the years in between each numbered chapter of the unfolding new saga.

A Yoda movie was the first rumored prospect for spinoff; following in the trend of revisiting old characters from the original trilogy, today we get word that Han Solo and Boba Fett might also get their own, respective, feature films.

EW is dropping the exclusive, claiming to have it from sources that Solo and Fett are indeed the characters we will see in spinoff films. It makes perfect sense for Disney/Lucas to take a two-pronged approach to the franchise; on the one hand offering fans the nostalgic thrill of new adventures with old, beloved (lucrative) characters – meanwhile expanding the brand with the new Episodes and their characters.

Han Solo Harrison Ford Star Wars 7 Star Wars: Han Solo & Boba Fett Spinoff Films Revealed

Word is the Han Solo film would take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, chronicling how a young rapscallion bacome the legendary lovable roughneck smuggler. Of course (as will be detailed in our upcoming editorial) there must be a “How Han Met Chewie” element to this film for it to be all it can be.

If you couldn’t tell by the parameters being set, Han Solo would have to be played by a younger actor – though like The Hobbit, an aged Harrison Ford could still be utilized to frame the piece. Ford himself said he’s open to returning to the franchise.

The Boba Fett movie is more vague in shape, but basically the idea is to set it between either Episodes IV & V, or V & VI, with the gist of it being Boba tangling with a collection of fellow intergalactic Bounty Hunters and scumbags to obtain (or protect) some quarry. With a loose frame like that, we could very well end up seeing Han Solo’s carbonite slab bounced around the screen for an hour an a half while Boba tries to get it back. Add in cameos by unscrupulous types like Darth Vader, and this anti-hero Star Wars flick could be something refreshingly new.

Captain America director Joe Johnston told us personally he wants to make a Boba Fett movie – we’d still like to see that happen! Star Wars meets Dredd meets Catch Me if You Can? Why not.

Star Wars Episode 7 Boba Fett Actor Comments Star Wars: Han Solo & Boba Fett Spinoff Films Revealed

The current game plan is for Episodes VII – IX to be released every three years between 2015 – 2021, with additional films (like these solo spinoffs) in the gaps between Episodes chapters. Given the resources of Disney/LF, there very well could be two Star Wars films out a year, keeping with the Marvel blueprint.

No word on casting, writers or directors yet – and given the state flux we are living in regarding Star Wars as a whole, anything could end up happening. Don’t count Yoda, Republic Commandos, Shadow of the Empire or anything else out.

What about you guys? Any ideas to share?

Stay tuned, as more Star Wars news will surely be coming soon.

  1. Casting a young Han Solo… that’s a toughie. There were a couple of names I thought could maybe do the part justice if the sequel recast the characters, but they’re all as old as Ford was in the original trilogy. I can’t think of anyone younger that I think can pull of Ford’s charm.

    • Garrett Hedlund maybe? Could be a little bit of a stretch, but I think he could portray a young Han.

      • Totally agree. Was thinking of the same person.

      • Hehe, good call, considering that he basically is the Han Solo character in the Star Wars remake called “Eragon”.

      • I like Hedlund. I fear they’ll try putting a James Franco type actor in the role.

      • Gimme Karl Urban as Han Solo and my ticket’s already bought.

Ben Walker would also be fabulous

        • Karl Urban would make a better Boba Fett!

          • hell yes!

          • Karl Urban as Han Solo !! LOL

          • I was just thinking about who could play Fett and considering how Karl Urban completely owned the role Judge Dread while wearing the iconic helmet the entire movie (just like the comics) he is the perfect choice to play Boba Fett.

        • That’s who I was thinking of, too. Urban could pull it off.

    • As I mentioned in the open discussion: what about Arrow’s Colin Donnell (Tommy)? But he wouldn’t be much younger than Harrison Ford in Star Wars either…

      • I feel like he’s been one of the weaker aspects of Arrow. That could just be because of the writing though. He seems like he can be a solid enough actor, but I haven’t seen him in anything else so I can’t really judge his acting skills too much.

        • I think his acting is pretty good and I think he really has that rascally charm about him that would be essential for Han Solo.

          • May have to see him in something else. TBH though, I can’t really imagine anyone but Harrison Ford playing Han Solo. Or maybe I just don’t want anyone else to play him.

            • I think I share your skepticism, since Han Solo charm is hard to pull off with seeming smarmy. I’d put Benjamin Walker from Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ahead of him, maybe better than Hedlund since he’s less of a name (and not already anchoring a Disney franchise).

    • Dennis Quaid would be good!

      • …? Han Solo would have to be in his late 20′s or early 30′s in this film. Quaid will be in his 60′s when this starts filming. You might as well cast Ford then.

    • I can’t imagine an actor being brave enough to take on a screen idol like Han Solo. Not after Harrison Ford burned the image and swagger of Solo into our retinas 35 years ago.

      • Having mulled it over, I know nobody is really going to hold a candle to H Ford’s Solo, but….as someone has already said.. I think James Franco has the same kind of swagger Solo had. He also has the same kind of s**t eating grin and twinkly eyes that Solo had.

So If they really were going to do it, Franco is the only actor I can think of that I’d be remotely happy watching as a younger Han Solo.

  2. I wish they would the spinoffs about characters we haven’t seen on screen before. Though I understand taking this approach. It’s safer in terms of bringing in a bigger audience, and it’ll cut down on any confusion caused by having multiple Star Wars movies coming out in the same time frame. I still want to see a movie exploring the The Old Republic universe, but who knows when/if that will happen.

  3. Nobody should play han solo. This film is a mistake. Boba fett movie, i’m all for !

    • I hope the fett movie is made for adults and not just the kiddy winks. Like they said above Star wars meets Dredd. (But maybe a little less gory and seedy)

  4. Already been there with “The Han Solo trilogy”. Come on Disney, bring something new to the table.

  5. Lol @ “marvel blueprint”

Anyway, i think Han Solo, Boba Fett, Mace Windu, Darth Maul, The Emperor & The Wookies all deserve backstories & standalone films.

    • I agree about Darth Maul. He was the best part of Episode I. I wanted more of him.

      • Yeah just like darth vaser’s origins used to be a good idea… Until the movies came out. Sometimes “fleshing” characters out or showing everything just reduces them to something less. This will have to be handled very delicately and with great stories/directors.

        • I didn’t say an origin story. I just want more of him.

          • Agreed more maul would be cool to see. Though, and this might just be me, when I know the character will die etc it for some reason makes it less interesting. Suppose its because eerything he does in a prequel must lead up to ep 1.

  6. I’m very excited for Episode 7, but I’m a little skeptical of all these spinoff films that are floating around. Star Wars fans like myself have been burned by prequels before. I don’t really want to walk that road again.

Whoever they cast as a young Han Solo would have tremendous shoes to fill. I’d leave that one alone. The Boba Fett thing I could get behind if the story was good.

Like I said yesterday, as long as Disney doesn’t sacrifice quality for quantity, this could be awesome.

  7. Disney is rollin’ in it… Marvel, Star Wars, Princesses, Pirates, Pixar… and the parks.

Need to go buy some DIS.

  8. I hope they never show (adult) Boba Fett’s face.

    • Fett 3D? :D

        :D

        • Oops, I meant to post the small version:

          http://i.imgur.com/tVzUsZB.jpg

          • @TheLostWinchester – Did you create that? If so, may I borrow it if/when I post a blog about all this? I’ll link straight to it.

            • Sure!

          • Ha! That is totally wicked!!

  9. A new, young Han Solo?

Has Ryan Gosling received his phone call from Disney, yet?

    • Booooooooooooooooooooooo! ;)

      • Gotta agree. While Ryan Gosling is a terrific actor, he is not right for every role.

        • Get Renner lol he’ll play anything for $

      • But you guys know that if Disney and the “Suits” have it their way – Gosling would be their first pick.

Gosling is box office $$$$$$ and is one of the hottest actors out there right now.

        • Who guys know Ryan Gosling hasn’t done a big blockbuster movie yet. Gangster Squad is his first like big mainstream movie.

Gosling is a great actor and knows how to pick roles (besides Notebook).

    • As nice as Goslings wobbly eyes are Han Solo’s eyes are not wobbly.

  10. Over saturation.

    • More like “4 Billion Dollars to reel back in”. ;)

  11. Pretty sure Robot Chicken already did one with Boba Fett’s trip between V and VI. Actually Boba’s story in Robot Chicken is the best thing ever.

  12. I’m not a fan of these ideas for spin-offs. Yoda, a great warrior in a tiny creature’s body…was funny to think about in Empire and then he trains Luke in the force and you believe he is the Mr. Miyagi of a galaxy far far away. Then, in the prequels he is CGI jumping frog…it was kind of fun to watch him fight Dooku, but a feature film of that and Yoda speak? It’ll be too much. Boba Fett became a fan favorite in Empire with hardly any speaking lines (maybe none…can’t remember the “original” un-tampered versions anymore). Like Yoda, he is a character shrouded in mystery and that is what makes him great. The viewer can give these characters their own back-stories and sometimes our imaginations are better than what screen writers think of. Remember how they tied Boba Fett’s daddy to the Storm Troopers…(FACEPALM). I don’t need an origin story for all these characters. They have plenty of other chances where these characters can make appearances. I’d rather see a movie about the criminal underworld and have Boba Fett cameo than an entire movie devoted to destroying his mythology.

    • I always thought Yoda would have been so powerful that he wouldn’t need a lightsabre. Or at least control one with his mind. He just looked silly flipping about. He lost his elegance in that scene. And then he bends over picks up his walking stick and hobbles off!!?? BWHAAAAAA HAAA HAAA! Complete nonsense.

      • That it was. Still, I remember in the theater that everyone went nuts for it on opening night. Like I said, fun for five minutes…not a feature long deal though.

    • with all that said, if Boba Fett gets his own movie, Joe Johnson should direct it.

  13. Boba Fetts’s face will look just like Jango Fetts’s face…..he’s a clone!!
The guy that played Jango Fett should play Boba.

I don’t know of any actos out there right now that could be a young Han Solo. Whoever they choose could also play the me Indiana Jones when they make those new movies.

I’d like to see a standalone movie with Palpatine and his Sith Master Darth Plagis (sp?) the wise, the most powerful Sith of all.

    • “Boba Fetts’s face will look just like Jango Fetts’s face…..he’s a clone!!
The guy that played Jango Fett should play Boba.”

True, but they shouldn’t have ever shown his face. I didn’t ever care to know what Boba Fett looked like under the helmet. He could have been anything…a wookie, whatever Greedo was, whatever Darth Maul was, something entirely different and cool. Instead, we got the guy from Speed 2 and Barb Wire.

      • They should never had shown Jango’s face. Even if we did see the clones, they should have kept a helmet on him. It was like they were going.. “Ooh, look, this is what Boba looks like, but it’s his dad and younger self, so you can’t moan about it because technically we haven’t shown his face.”

      • You should watch the movie “Once Were Warriors”. Temuera Morrison (Jango/clones) delivers some amazingly great acting in it (and besides, it’s also a great movie). After having seen it, there’s nothing I want more than a Boba Fett movie with Temuera Morrison getting pissed off – I swear it’d be epic!

    • Darth Plagueis would be a good story. Darth Bane would be a good story as well as it shows why there is only two sith (one master and one apprentice) in the movies.

      • Both are great stories.

      • I’d rather have Darth Plagueis appear in the new trilogy. Both Anakin’s birth and the origins of the Sith are mysteries that needs answering from episode I/1, and answering them in episode IX/9 would really tie together all three trilogies.
Luke, having established a new Jedi Order, is in a constant search of knowledge about the old order, but also seeks more knowledge of the Sith and what really happened to his father, in order to be able to avoid having students fall to the Dark Side and repeat history. Together with Jacen Solo (or another potential villain student), he finds a lead on Plagueis that first leads him to a place with some Sith holocrons and stuff. From here they discover Korriban, and Jacen comes upon the spirits of Naga Sadow, Ajunta Pall, Marka Ragnos and the like, who then corrupt him.
Luke dies, either before or after this (episode VIII/8 would probably be best), and so the torch is passed on – not to his son, but to Leia, now a skilled Jedi. (“my father has it, I have it, and my sister has it”). Leia continues Luke’s search and finally (in episode IX/9) finds the spirit of Plagueis, who reconizes her as the offspring of Anakin, and reveals that he created him through the Force.
In the end, Jacen is defeated or redeemed, perhaps by Luke’s son, Ben, the ancient Sith are possibly defeated or “sealed off” too, perhaps by the more-powerful-than-you-can-imagine spirits of Obi-Wan, Yoda, Qui-Gon and Anakin, and Jedi Grand Master Leia Solo is finally ready to pass the torch on to the next generation. Happy ending but with casualties.
We learned about what the Sith really are, finally got the mysteries of Anakin (and Plagueis and Sidious) revealed, had the father-me-sister setup fulfilled, the whole saga with all three trilogies tied together into one story about Jedi and Sith and the mysteries of the Force, and it’s all wrapped up in a definite ending to the story about Anakin. What do you guys think?

  14. I gotta admit, all this new Star Wars news is all a little much to get my head round. I feel they are trying to run before they can walk.

I’m pretty interested in stuff from the expanded universe, but virtually all the characters introduced by the prequel films I have no interest in.

  15. The SW universe is so huge and they want to bring back old characters…I mean, Disney is great in one thing, money, therefore ability to produce almost anything even for the price of being unsuccessful. But please, bring something new on the table…the Old Republic has potential, Republic Commando deserves a movie…if you bring back Han Solo, fans are gonna hate you forever…

  16. They should just mash this Han Solo and Boba Fett film together and create a history between the two or something. Boba Fett hunting Han Solo across the galaxy for an entire film, awesome. Because they really did’nt show that in Episode V.

  17. Kinda feels like Disney are simultaneously breathing new life into Star Wars while also flogging it to death.

  18. The other day I watched a movie or tv show and seeing the lead made me think to myself “That guy would make an awesome young-Han”. Sadly, I can’t remember what movie/tv show it was, what it was about, or what the actor’s name is :( I will forever more refer to him as ‘The Lost Solo’…

…Anyway. I’ve been hoping for a Boba Fett spin-off ever since I saw the character the first time and I’d totally be into a Han Solo spin-off as well.

I just hope it ends up being quality entertainment. The chances of Disney making something better than ‘A New Hope’ or ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is virtually impossible imo, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make GOOD Star Wars movies!
They should just remember the golden rule: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY (but if we can get both, then sweeeeet!!!)

  19. Big mistake – any actor playing Han would be emulating Ford, at best. At the worst, another wooden prequel-esque performance! Ford WAS Han – the character as scripted was just words on a piece of paper. It was Harrison’s own sarcasm and charm and ability to improvise, to deviate from the script that bought the character to life.

You can get somebody who looks similar, but you’ll never replace the character that Ford himself created onscreen. Unlike Bond, Harrison is Han. There’s just no way around that.

Concentrate on Episodes 7-9 and making those truly great, memorable pieces of cinema, instead of greedily running the Star Wars well dry already…..

    • “Concentrate on Episodes 7-9 and making those truly great, memorable pieces of cinema, instead of greedily running the Star Wars well dry already…”

      This.

    • Yup. I agree with everything you said, 7FN. That’s what Lucasfilm needs to worry about. The new trilogy.

I really don’t want to see someone else playing Han Solo.

  20. Nathan Fillion for HAN SOLO !!!

    Oh, wait….

He already played Han Solo. In some Star Wars rip off called “Serenity.”

    • LMAO Whedon is a hack!

  21. Umm…where did EW get this news, when Disney’s Iger just stated two days ago..and I quote

“Iger said the movies would be based on “great ‘Star Wars’ characters that are not part of the overall saga.”

I would have to say that Solo, Fett and Yoda are very much a part of the overall saga.

So, I ask again, where did EW get this info?

    • Terrible, terrible idea from Disney. Han Solo already got his fair dues in the OT, plus we don’t need a Boba Fett prequel – he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a bounty hunter. That’s about as much back story as is required for him. Also, what happened to expanding the SW universe rather than constricting it by going back to old characters? Did I already mention it’s a terrible idea?

  22. I can envision a prequel type movie in a sort of buddy team up with a younger Solo\Lando having adventures rather than Solo\Chewy….They could cover how they used to be buddies on adventures together before they had a falling out over the millenium falcon…to me Solo\Lando would be more marketable and entertaining than a Solo\Chewy buddy movie.

  23. i always felt that Chris Evans would make a good han solo, but he is probably to old now…

  24. shouldny boba fet and han solo be in one movie together?

  25. Kathleen Kennedy……You ROCK! Don’t listen to any of the nuts….make 2-3 Great Star Wars films a year…..Billions and Billions of dollars for Disney and Heaven for us….the World will never tire of Great Star Wars films!

  26. Emma Stone would be a perfect younger version of Princess Leia Organa Solo. nuff said

    • I agree. Emma Stone def has the appeal and the guts to do Princess Leia proud. She’s got the feistiness!

BUT I don’t think Leia will play a part in these Han Solo flicks. They will likely take place before EP 4.

It would actually be a HOOT to see Han womanize different rebel alliance chicks.

Oh. I mentioned Ryan Gosling but another actor that I think would be interesting would be ” Bradley Cooper. “

      • those two are good choices to play Han, or maybe bring in Tom Hardy (although I think he would do well as a Sith). As for Leia I think it would be interesting to see the Courtship of Princess Leia storyline as a movie.

  27. Screw all of this. I want a Forces Unleashed movie and see Star Killer!!!

  28. This is good news. The “young Han” story is just begging to be filmed. The smuggler/underworld/non-Jedi part of the Star Wars universe has been neglected for far too long. I would like Garret Hedlund a lot in the role.

Boba Fett is also a good idea, but I do not personally consider the whole “Jango Fett/Clone” thing to be canon, so I would be a bit leery of what sort of story they’d end up spinning for Fett.

Yoda – again, no. No. No.

    • I didn’t like it when Yoda confirmed to Luke that Vader was his father. I prefer to think that Vader was lying about that. So I don’t personally consider the whole “Vader is Luke’s father” thing to be canon.

Well, I do, but you get the point, right? The prequels are as much canon as the sequels (episode V and VI). Get over it.

  29. Boba Fett will work only if they never show his face, ala Dredd, ala the OT. Joe Johnston should direct, Alan Silvestri score. Best choice for a spinoff though by far.

Han Solo will never work and they should quit while they’re ahead. Even trying to recast will make it an automatic fail. My respect for Disney and Lucasfilm just dropped tremendously upon hearing this. If they need a Han Solo-esque movie set during the OT, just make Shadows of the Empire with Dash Rendar (Josh Holloway!) as the star. Nobody has to be recast and the little the originals need to be in it can be done with Tron/Benjamin Button/Avatar CG.
