For some fans, the steady stream of new footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is too much, too soon. We’re still roughly a month out from the film’s release, and if every few days a new clip or photo is released, then just how much of The Force Awakens will we have seen before it premieres? Director J.J. Abrams may have confirmed the most recent trailer would be the last, but that apparently doesn’t apply to TV spots or specials touting new first looks at The Force Awakens – all of which have included at the very least a smidgen of new footage.
This latest clip promoting The Force Awakens comes from Disney XD and features clips of footage cut with a young teen host explaining the general jist of the film. Of note, the clip includes our first look at General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson) in action, ordering his ship to fire, as well as a few short bits of new dialogue from The Force Awakens‘ heroic trio: Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac).
General Hux is an interesting character because unlike say Kylo Ren or even Captain Phasma, very little has been shared about his motivations in the film. Presumably, Hux will fill a role that’s somewhat similar to Grand Moff Tarkin’s in A New Hope. Yet, unlike Tarkin and Darth Vader, who shared something of working relationship with common goals, we learned from EW‘s exclusive coverage that Hux and Kylo Ren have a more antagonistic relationship.
Since this short promo aired on the Disney Channel it was clearly aimed at the younger generation of Star Wars fans, choosing to focus on the film’s younger generation of heroes: Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. Rey and Finn seem well suited for each other, both needing to encourage themselves as they embark on this wild new adventure. The similarities between the two has been a key part of The Force Awakens‘ marketing, with Rey as the stranded scavenger and Finn the rogue stormtrooper, both looking for something to believe in.
Poe’s relation to the other two is less clear. Thanks to the new images recently released, we know that Poe and Finn share scenes (and wardrobes, apparently) early on, but we haven’t yet seen what sort of interactions Poe and Rey will share, if any. So some mysteries remain, even with this flurry of Force Awakens footage.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
