Lando Calrissian Billy Dee Williams Star Wars Episode 7 Star Wars Episode VII: Billy Dee Williams Considering Return as Lando Calrissian

In this unfolding saga of Star Wars Episode VII news, most of the headlines have been focused on issues like Luke, Leia and Han Solo returning to the franchise, or what kind of spinoff films we’ll see down the line. However, we know what hardcore Star Wars fans have been thinking all along: What’s up with Lando Calrissian?

With the recent word that original franchise stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are all set to make a (at least cameo) return in Episode VII, there have been rumblings about whether actor Billy Dee Williams might also make an appearance, as an older and wiser version of Lando the Baron Administrator from Cloud City. Today we have word from the actor himself on the matter.

Film Buff had a chance to speak with Billy Dee at the Monster Mania convention (of all places), where the actor confirmed that, “he has been asked, but hasn’t decided if he is going to do it or not yet.” BDW has certainly kept the character alive over the years, lending his voice to various Star Wars-inspired  TV shows and video games; he was even set to return in the animated comedy Star Wars: Detours, which has since been put on hold as Disney re-organizes the animated portion of its LucasFilm acquisition.

Billy Dee Williams is just one of those guys who never loses his iconic swagger. Whether pushing some Colt 45 on the masses, doing cameos on shows like Modern Family or blazing trails as a black Harvey Dent, BDW is just one of those three-name stars people like enjoy (see also: Neil Patrick Harris). Lando Calrissian has similarly become a pop-culture icon, thanks to people like Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane who has (either directly or indirectly) referenced the character in his animated works.

Star Wars fans woud on doubt like to see an appearance by Lando – not so long that it wears out its welcome, mind you – just long enough for us to feel the magic again. A lot of people point to the dark ending, the Han Solo/Leia romance or the Luke/Vader family drama as the reason Empire Strikes Back has become such a classic; but you an I know it was really the soul power of Billy Dee Williams!

Want to see Lando Calrissian return (at least for a cameo) in Episode VII?

Star Wars Episode VII will be in theaters in 2015.

  1. If Hamill, Fisher and Ford can return, why not Williams. He is as integral to the movie as the previous three.

In all honesty, none of them should return, slowly starting to look like the Scifi version of the Expendables.

    • lol, yup. They should absolutely close the deal and bring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict in.

      • Now that you mention it, maybe a mashup is exactly what Star Wars needs. If we go there, I want David Tennant as Dr. Who to rain fire and brimstone down upon Jar Jar and the Ewoks.

  2. I think he should return as Lando.

  3. Sure, as long as he has a Colt 45. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of a Colt 45.

  4. Would be nice for him to make an appearance. I hope the new movie(s) don’t get too bogged down with legacy characters though.

  5. If this whole thing is simply a nostalgia-fest, then what’s the point of even making these new films? They could just re-release the old ones (again).

The more I hear of returning faces, the less hope I have that this will be good.

If it wasn’t for the director I’d be predicting very bad things for these films by now.

Let’s have something new and wonderful for SW now, sure a quick scene or two with LL&H, then onto new heroes.

  6. is his schedule really that busy?

  7. It’s obvious that this would just be a cameo role. Do you really think that J.J. would sign on to do a geriatrics version of SW?

I think all these returning faces are just window dressing to the actual story.

    • You gotta be right. Otherwise Lucas (I think it was Lucas) wouldn’t have said he would write their characters out if they weren’t down to appear in the film. They could not be written out, that would not even be an option unless they were only appearing as side characters.

  8. I don’t want any of them in a new Star Wars. I don’t want big heaping spoonfuls of galactic space-corn, thank you.

This is shaping up to rival the Star Wars X-mas special.

    • Eh?

Fisher, Hamill, Ford and Dee-Williams are all great actors. I fail to see where this Space-corn is a factor?!

  9. Whats wrong with all of you ! Its awesome their bringing back the original cast. The storyline will obviously deal with their children, can you guys just relax and enjoy. WTF you guys are such freakin downers.

    • Exactly, a cynical bunch there. Like seriously, you’re gonna bring back the 3 most important characters to the series and EXPECT only cameos? Are people stupid or just plain ignorant and disrespectful. Mark Hamill is still a heck of an actor, obviously Harrison is the best and Carrie is no slouch either. The only requirement or wish I would have is that they stick to Lucas’s original story treatment as much as possible since they were written in his “productive” time and ideally wouldn’t be the crap he’s turned out recently, plus they need to drop some serious lbs for the role so we can enjoy looking at them and in Luke’s case, convince us he’s still the Jedi we all want him to be.

  10. I think he should return as the coolest black dude in the universe! I think this is going to be a great movie with the original star wars cast, why not come back as Lando! the other originals cast is, Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Queen Leia Solo.

    • I agree. These movies aren’t going to focus on Luke, Leia and Han. Luke will be the new Obi Wan/ Yoda. Leia in either the Mon Mothma role or as the Supreme Chancellor. Han, who knows what they’ll have him do. Their kids will be the heroes and mabye one of them a villain. I would like to see more than just a cameo from Luke seeing as though he has a new jedi order to train and all, not to mention a mentor for the new heros.

  11. These characters will be used very sparingly I’ve no doubt. The only one who will have a more prominent role to play will be Luke. Beyond episode 7 you probably won’t see them at all. And why not have them reprise their roles? You need them in there rather than just dismiss them. What do you want? A quick mention at the end of the opening scroll ‘oh yeah and Luke, leia and Han all died a few years ago….’

  12. I agree with you man! I don’t know why star wars fans are so negative, doesn’t any one remember great movies with the original cast coming back in there role for examp ROCKY 6 RAMBO 4 or even star trek 2009 with Lenard Nimoy, so I think this is geat that the originals are coming back so star wars fan calm down and think positive and ”may the force be with you”’ all of you fans.

  13. To be perfectly honest I am not worried about the old characters returning. I am a fan of J.J Abrams but I did not want him to direct Star Wars 7. Lando should be in the movie to gain more respect from the Star Wars fans. He made a deal with Vader, lost the Falcon to Han, hit on Leia and had pancake face as a sidekick in the falcon in Return of the Jedi. This character could use some support and maybe they should give him and honorable death or just make him a traitor again. Either way I am fine.

  14. Wow, there are a lot of ageists posting on here. And, I’m 29.

Obviously, BDW should AGREE to be in Episode VII. If he decided not do, then he’s a jack wagon.

  15. Now this what I like to see positive post form star wars fans! the more postive reaction the more postive the movie is going to be, The more negative the more it’s going to be a bad movie. So stay postive star wars fans and ”may the force be with you”’.

  16. I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

    • Best get on your cosmic surfboard then. (^-^)

  17. U think that Billy Dee Williams should come back in a small role as the other three actors. It would help the connective ties to the past film but as I said they should not be the entire main focus. These characters are there to serve the same roles as Darth Vader, Obi-wan, Yoda and the Emperor (and lesser extent Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt) ub the original classic trilogy–supporting. They serve as emotional thematic ties and populate that world and help put the new cast of characters (the new generation of heroes) on to new directions.

Should they have their stories and arcs? I have no problem as long as its small and ties in with the new direction and story. They should highlight and underline the new characters not overshadow them.

So yeah let Billy Dee Williams return. The way I see it, both Lando and Han were under served in Return of the Jedi. They need a redemption.

  18. “Should BDW return?”

    IT’S A TRAP!

    • haha I see what you did there…

    • If the res of the old gang are back then I want Admiral Ackbar back too!

  19. i’ve been waiting for them to return since ep 4 came out :) Thank god for good news. Maybe they can have an enemy from the future to destroy their planet and only Luke can go back in time to warn himself and save everyone .. hmms sounds familiar :)

  20. lol star wars version of expendables nice. the only way i can see it working is if they jump 30 yrs in the future or they hav cameos. but they cant go from where the movies ended, hamill was the youngest and he is still lookin old, ford looks ooold, and fisher is kinda chubby for the part, all good actors considering, but fanlove only goes so far. but yeah bring him back might as well if the rest are

  21. One of the coolest cats in any universe! Youtube or Netflix Mahogany or Lady Sings the Blues!

  22. I wonder why he’s still on the fence.
I’d like to see him return. Don’t know where he’d fit into the story though whereas, if VII is about Han & Leia and Luke & Mara Jade’s kids, it’s pretty clear where those three would fit in.

Still, a cameo or something would be very cool. Seeing as he’s the only black person in the galaxy, his appearance is crucial for reasons of diversity ;)

    • well, you had Mace Windu too, but he died…

      • Mace was my favorite of the Prequels and he was only in like 30 min of the films at most. At least he got the coolest death in Star Wars history excluding the emperor.

  23. I hope he’s not just gonna hold out for a ridiculously large paycheck. I hope Disney offers him a generous amount and that he wants to do it.

  24. I insist on seeing the return of Jabba the Hutt!

  25. If they go by the comics at all, then yes they need Lando. What are they gonna do, replace Billy Dee?? I think not.

    • I thought they said the story was going to be original and not relate to the comics, books or video games?

      • That’s great news!! :)

  26. I hope he comes back along with Chewie and C-3P0 and R-2D2

  27. I hope he comes back, Star Wars needs Lando’s coolness. I’m very glad that the original cast is returning because I always felt that their story was not completed. I read the alot of the EU material, but I always preferred my own “plots” that I created when I was playing with my action figures as a youngling. I said it before, I really hope that the new Star Wars movies do not constrict themselves to the EU because there are so many possibilities, I know I’ll get alot of flack, but it essentially leads into another Darth Vader type of arch with the Solo kid turning to the Dark Side.

Anyway, I’m excited because we should finally see Luke as a Jedi Master. I thought every one would be thrilled that the original cast is coming back, but it’s obvious that’s not the case mostly because of how they (the actors) currently look, pretty sad in my opinion. O well, I’m freak’n excited, I wonder if any characters from the Clone Wars series will be integrated into the movies because that would allow for the possibility of Darth Maul returning or if they will mention or even show Starkiller since his story is canon. Wow, I’m just happy that we are getting some more Star Wars.

As many of the fans stated above “May the Force be with you” all.

  28. If Lando comes back, I want Nien Nunb too. He’s Lando’s Chewbacca.

    • The bloke who looks like frank sidebottom? He has to come back!! As has admiral akba

  29. Ep 7 better have a black hole space battle!
