J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII promises to be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) blockbusters arriving during the approaching storm that is 2015. As a result, there’s been an endless supply of rumors in recent months, with regard to who in Hollywood has auditioned for a role in the film.

That’s all the more true when it concerns which actresses have thrown their hats in the ring to play one of the two central female characters - one of whom may end up being the Luke Skywalker-esque protagonist featured in the third Star Wars live-action movie trilogy. So far, the actresses who’re reported to have read for one of those roles include Rachel Hurd-Wood (Peter Pan (2003)), Ksenia Solo (Lost Girl) and, most recently, Saoirse Ronan (Hanna).

Ronan has officially confirmed to Sky News that she read for a role in Episode VII, drawing from the screenplay written by Oscar-winner Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3). However, upon admitting that she did audition for Abrams’ Star Wars movie, Ronan added “so has everyone” – meaning, this confirmation shouldn’t at all be taken as an announcement that the actress will be joining the cast for Episode VII (anymore than Abrams refusing to rule out the idea that Benedict Cumberbatch might sign on for the film is tantamount to confirmation that the director will reunite with his Star Trek Into Darkness star on this new project).

That said: as was mentioned in a previous article, Ronan has come very close to signing on for a Disney-backed action tentpole twice in the past – first with the cancelled Order of the Seven (i.e. a martial arts epic that originated as a Snow White retelling), followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron (when Ronan was cited as the model for Scarlet Witch) – so, it feels as though there’s a reasonable chance that third time could be the charm for the actress (as far as her eventually signing on for Episode VII goes).

Not to mention, she’s well known amongst cinephiles for her strong performance in several indie and/or arthouse productions released over the past 5-6 years (see: Atonement, The Way Back, Byzantium, etc.), but Ronan is the sort of lesser-known in the public’s eye who’s (historically) been cast as one of the leads in a Star Wars movie. Then again, if rumors are to be believed, then even if Ronan does sign on for Episode VII, she might end up playing a villain - rather than the protagonist and/or the daughter of Han/Leia Solo, that is.

UPDATE: In less-official Episode VII-related news: the latest rumor (brought to you by Latino Review) is that Sullivan Stapleton – star of the TV show Strike Back and the upcoming movie spinoff 300: Rise of an Empire – has auditioned for a role in the new Star Wars film. In addition, LR‘s source has commented on the recent story about the possibility that Abrams will partly shoot Episode VII with IMAX cameras, saying “this IMAX thing is out of context.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is tentatively slated to reach theaters by Summer 2015, though it could wind up delayed until the Winter Holiday Season.

  1. I like her other works and she has proved that csn be and action actress, so let’s hope she get it!!

    • She has the most disgusting feet I have ever seen on an actress. Someone needs to buy her nail clippers so she can actually learn some basic personal grooming.

      • I can name several others who have revolting feet. But I would be satisfied to know that if she takes Star Wars, her feet will be covered up. SO I don’t know why you’re all retching over her feet.

      • Clearly you have never seen Christina Hendricks feet. But you screen names shows you are nothing more than a pathetic troll.

    • My first thought was “She’s too young to play Jaina Solo”; however, once I realized she was same actress from “The Host” I realized she can pull off the Mid-Twenties needed for Jaina.

That said, we can’t keep assuming that people are all reading for main character roles as the children of Solo and Skywalker. They could be reading for supporting roles as Friends and Peers to them, getting dragged into this new conflict involving them. If this is going to be a “hand-off movie” to the next generation, we have to entertain the fact they could introduce new characters that may or may not be part of existing canon and lore.

  2. I like Bananarama Chewbacca, he would make a great Thrawn.

  3. Star Wars VII should definitely film large sequences and space sequences in IMAX. That would be epic. And I’m totally down for Ronan. My hopes are up most importantly for Cumberbatch.

  4. I’m hoping she gets the role, because she is very talented. Her and Benedict Cumberbatch would be great.

  5. I wonder why she didn’t get the role of the Scarlet Witch (in Avengers 2)? Olsen is good, Ronan would be better.

    • I’d rather see Saoirse as a strong Jedi (or Sith) ass kicker in Episode 7 than a watered down Scarlet Witch.

It looked like she was the front runner for The Scarlet Witch for a minute or two.

Maybe she opted for SW 7. Smart girl!

  6. If Ronan is willing to do it, sign her up immediately. She is just too good to pass up. In order to bring the fantastical to life you need fantastic actors and she is definitely in that category.

  7. I hope they get her and Cumberbatch. Would be great. I also hope the rumor is true and Liam McIntyre gets a role in the film; he became a great Spartacus throughout the show and really felt for him in the season finalie. He’s a great actor who would fit well in this universe either as Jedi or Sith.

  8. Ronan, an absolutely fantastic actress. An Oscar nominee at the age of 13, sign her up please. She’s obviously got the acting chops but as anyone who’s seen Hanna will tell you, she’s also got the skill-set to be a tough action hard ass. Young Jedi or Sith, I think she’d be perfect for either.

Yeah, and she’s also from County Carlow in Ireland where I’m from, and her names Saoirse, and I love her

  9. (yawn) When is the Dark Crystal getting readapted again?

  10. Sullivan Stapleton!!!

Love him! Get him in this series (although he will have to watch his language since this is Disney we talkin bout)

  11. I adore Saoirse. She has the most amazing eyes.

Really hoping she gets cast in Episode 7.

She was awesome in “Byzantium” – along with Gemma Arterton.

More than anything, very glad that SW7 is gonna have some female lead characters for a change.

    • * STRONG female lead characters.

  12. They should have Bryan Cranston be the villain, that would be epic

  13. Saoirse Ronan would be so cool in SW, great actress, I hope its happening !

  14. I’d imagine that Abrams and co already have a very good idea of who they intend to cast. It’s now just a matter of working out the details.

  15. Abrams is usually very tight lipped on his casting. I don’t think Saoirse would confirm her audition unless 1) she’s in negotiation 2) she has in the bag and Abrams told her to go and spread some rumors that “everyone has auditioned”.

  16. She is 100% worthy of a part in this film.
