Ever since Disney announced Star Wars: Episode VII (after buying Lucasfilm), we’ve been awaiting some official confirmation about whether or not original trilogy stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are reprising their roles as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo in the film. That could lend more credibility to rumor about the trio passing the baton to a new generation of actors, who might be playing their characters’ offspring (remember, that’s not at all confirmed).

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that all three fan-favorites are gearing up for a return trip to George Lucas’ iconic galaxy far, far, away, between Hamill confirming that discussions are ongoing and Fisher indicating it’s a done deal before quickly assuring everyone it was just a “joke.” (Translation: She let the cat out of the bag too early?) We can add Lucas himself to the growing list of people who aren’t doing a very good job of keeping this “secret” under-wraps.

Lucas was quick to realize his mistake, as illustrated by the following quote and article excerpt (via Bloomberg Businessweek):

“We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation,” Lucas said. “So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’” He pauses. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” Then he adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.”

The remainder of the article focuses on interesting aspects concerning the financial side of Disney and Lucasfilm’s deal, with some intriguing tidbits concerning how Lucas heavily resisted handing over his original treatments for Episodes 7 and beyond. However, the big thing to take away from this is that Hamill, Fisher and Ford are essentially locked down for the next installment, barring any unexpected (and unlikely) last-minute breakdowns in negotiations.

We’ve been hearing about the storyline for Episode VII features older versions of Luke, Leia and Han (re: age-approriate for the actors) ever since the news got out that Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) is working on the script. Hopefully, Disney and Lucasfilm will issue a press release confirming the actors are coming back, so we can finally move onto more interesting questions and debates about the original cast.

That includes:

Similarly, with J.J. Abrams directing Episode VII, there’s all the more reason to wonder about who will follow in the footsteps of Anakin and Luke Skywalker by serving as the third trilogy’s protagonist (maybe Han and Leia’s daughter); not to mention, unsettled matters like how much the next wave of installments will harken back to the ‘retro’ style of the original trilogy, or continue with the CGI sheen of the prequels.

We’re not even going to touch the hot debate about whether John Williams ought to score the new trilogy (since he’s ready and willing), or instead help another composer to assume that responsibility…

Star Wars: Episode VII is tentatively scheduled to reach theaters by 2015.

  1. Leia-governess

    • Cody, for once I agree with you.

      Leia – queen/head of federation.
Luke – Jedi master/teacher (the new Yoda)
      Han – Leia’s husband/federation commander.

And gotta have Chewbacca back as a friend of Han/Wookiee general.

      • Ok, this is a long shot, but there is one “obscure” movie role I would like to see reprised by the original actor to bring him full circle, thus solidifying the character and actor’s place in the Star Wars Theatrical Universe.

I want to see the former Lt. Bren Drelen of “Empire Strikes Back” return as the now (and soon to be retiring) Major Bren Drelen with none other than the original actor who played him who went on to “Cheers” and Pixar fame & fandom – John Ratzenberger.

Shouldn’t be that difficult to secure him from Pixar for an actual Live Action Role that’s more serious than he’s been accustomed to since “Cheers”, but again he’s an actor and character that I would like to see brought full circle.

      • unfortunately they wont be able to bring chewie back due to the fact that this movie has to take place quite a few years after the battle of yavin (destruction of the death star) of which chewie died 3 years later on kashyyk. I have delved deeply into all of the star wars works between books movies the series and even swtor of which I have multiple charachters

      • Chewie iets squished by a moon during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion :(

  2. If they don’t bring back Hamill, Ford, and Fisher as well as John Williams and especially sound designer Ben Burtt, it will be a major misstep. I’m willing to guess that’s their plan though… :)

    • With regard to John Williams scoring the new movies, he (supposedly) said this at a Feb. 9th concert this year:

“We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”

  3. Billy Dee Williams and Peter Mayhew(Chewie) are going to be in Lexington next weekend for our comic-con. Me thinks I may have to ask them if we haven’t gotten official word by then. Not that I expect them to tell me if they do know but it never hurts to ask.

    • I’m totally up for Lando an Chewie to return let me know what happens there man

      • Will do bro

  4. Wow. I just lost my original post to The Dark Side….

Anyway, I’d love to see them use elements from the EU without being slavish to the storylines. I’dlove to see Jade, The Skywalker and Solo kids, Thrawn and Karrde without necessarily having them all meet the same ends as the books. If Jacen wants to be the new Vader by the end of 7, that’s cool, but I don’t know if they need to kill off Ben or Mara. They might be nice characters to use throughout the new trilogy. Either one could do a nice stand-alone too…

    • Oh, and Lando as New Republic Chancellor and Noghri, please, Noghri.

  5. The only thing that will save this new trilogy is………..

    • Don’t remember her character ! Was she in Zahn’s book’s ?

    • Works for me. Queen Latifah is always welcome.

    • Queen Latifah – of Taxi, Bringining down the House and Set it off fame?!

I was being sarcastic but ok, let’s get her onboard, I think she would make a decent addition in any role! Lol

  6. I am still excited about getting new Star Wars movies. Also bribg back Wedge

  7. Bring Nicolas Cage for Ackbar Jr

  8. I still think it looks like Han either stepped in someones gum or found a quarter on the floor. (In the second image.)

    • and u still make me laugh mention that !
      Cheers ! :)

  9. You know the ultra-secretive JJ Abrams is hating this. Ford, Hamill, Fisher and even Lucas are going to get a call to the principles office and get a stern talking to. ;)

  10. Please, please, please, no female protagonist.

    • Why not?

    • Worse than that, please, no child protagonist. That’s the worst.

  11. They really should only appear as supporting cast in small roles that make the connection to the original trilogy. As experts, high ranking officers or family.

    • So just like so many female characters in Hollywood, sideshow.

The main reason that all those so called big films do so badly, is because they all have the same sort of men in the leading roles,
average is 4 men versus 1 supporting woman,
in all sort of films, Action, SuperHeroe , thrillers etc
(twice a year a film is released in a cliche genre with women , just to make it more evident)

I hope the lead will be a women, and a Jedi.
Anna Torv would be great, awesome actress, knows everyting there is to know about green screen acting,
Yielded a sword as Nariko in Heavenly Sword, for which she did voice and motion capture.

      • I believe he was referring to the original cast, and not wether we should have a male/female lead.

        • Exactly. I’m not opposed to a female lead. Not at all. That’s why I asked Etrigan why he said “Please no female protagonist”.

          • Personally I would love to have a female lead and if it’s played by Chloe Grace Mortez I think that will work well because she usually entertains me as an actress even though kick ass just wasn’t my kind of movie. Honestly if they do end up using a female protagonist I will be interested an excited because it’s certainly something different and new, not to mention that it couldprobably draw in a bigger female audience and make me feel liked can like star wars and get a girlfriend (please note I’m not saying that girls can’t like star wars I’m just saying I know very few of not none that do, please don’t take it the wrong way). Maybe what I would have a harder time swallowing is the idea of using the descendants of the original cast members because a partof me says they condo a wonderful job but the other partof me is saying that it just feels a little less creative and all that stuff. So I’d prefer to just stick with a female antagonist and maybe have her meet Luke’s son or something like that. If they choose to use the kid story I thinkmim fine within as long as they make their own thing and choose to to basest off the books that I hear write about them all the time, though I hear a lot of the books are very good I think that it would work better for the movie of they treated it like they came up with the idea like change the names, swap the genders around change up some personalities make new characters out of old ones I guess that would work for me.

  12. ….Excellent.

  13. Yes it’s effective, it’s pretty much the only way they could have done it. They just have to cast the right people to take over from here (i.e., their kids).

It just makes me laugh that everyone is so excited they can’t keep their $h!t together. I admit. I’m pretty excited myself.

  14. james d’arcy

U can google him,he would make a nice young Solo !

  15. This is interesting of course, but not any sort of truly significant “cat out of the bag” scenario. I think that it will be nice for them to appear providing that their parts are well-written and take into account their age – that “digital reverse-aging” effect is an abomination in my book.

Still, what will make this film is a good screenplay and good new characters. That is what we are really waiting to hear about – new cast members, who they will be playing, and some substantive plot info. That will be big news when we hear it, but I am not expecting to hear much very soon.

  16. Many $$$$$$$$$$$$ = Delays…

  17. I think the new trilogy should be made using a combination of the methods used to make the original trilogy alongside CGI. That way your not just making everything with CGI but rather using it to make the models look more realistic.

    • Exactly. Let’s face it. Episode I, II, and III all looked too surreal. I much prefer the visual aesthetics of IV, V, VI. That’s not to say that CGI can’t be used. But using nothing BUT CGI would be a disaster. Movies that are mainly shot in front of a green screen have always been difficult for me to watch.

  18. Harrison Ford looks like an over grown mentally challenged kid that got to go out with his parents and wear a tux for the first time.

    • And I’m sure you look stunning in a tux.

  19. Maybe in this one they can introduce Kyle Katarn I vote Gerard Butler or Bradd Pitt to play him

    • @ Conor

I agree Kyle is my favorite Jedi and I would be fine with Gerard Butler playing him but not Brad Pitt. I would like Disney to hire Jason Court out of retirement (which wouldn’t be hard) and get him to play the part.

  20. I’ve enjoyed growing up with Star Wars and am looking forward to seeing this up coming trilogy.
I hope they do a good job.

Speaking of Star Wars. I’m sure some you have seen John Carter and how it was a horrible flop. The only reason why it was a flop was because of the horrible promo job they did for the film. John Carter really shaped Lucas’ thoughts on Sci Fi which eventually created Star Wars.
If you liked JOHN CARTER and want a sequel and want to prove to DISNEY that there is a following (we just didn’t know a good movie was out until it was to late) Please sign this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/alan-horn-chairman-walt-disney-pixar-studios-bring-back-john-carter-take-us-back-to-barsoom

  21. As I point out at http://rmcmillen.hubpages.com/hub/An-Open-Letter-To-All-Star-Wars-Geeks … I don’t see any of this going well… at all!

Please, whether hyped about Episode 7, 8 or 9… just please, come for the quiz and open letter, but stay for the documentary and sit back, relax and enjoy how wonderful the franchise used to be…. and probably wont ever be again.

  22. ALL MOVIES MUST HAVE HARRISON FORD, Hamill, and Fisher. I would also like Billy Dee Williams, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, Warwick Davis and anyone else from the originals that can do it! Darth Vader cannot come back. He died. I heard that Disney wanted to bring Darth Vader back. They just need another villian that is similiar maybe…

    • if they insist on going this route they merely need a Darth intent on resurrecting Empire to its former glory….. but that’s IF they decide to go through with this…. as I state in the link I posted before and as I say again….. I only see this going very, very badly for Luke, Leia and the group……..

I think they just need to stay back at the old folks home and enjoy the tenderized, imitation ewok meat and that intergalactic jello they love so much.

    • incorrect. there are only 2 characters that will be in all nine movies. R2-D2 and C3PO. it is, ultimately, their story.

  23. The main characters should be Jania and Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker and should be based on the Legacy of the Force novels. “Star Wars VII-Legacy of the Force” could even be a good name for episode VII. And if they’re going to make side story movies i would much rather see a Darth Bane movie instead of a Yoda movie

  24. John Williams will be composing the score for the newer movies. I was at the Hollywood Bowl at “John Williams Maestro of Movies” concert that he was composing and he confirmed himself that he was working on it and that they were also” threatening” (as he put it) to make more Indiana Jones.

  25. Does anyone know who the cast is actually gonna be? And is it correct that the knew movies of Star Wars comes out in 2014

  26. No one knows for sure of the cast yet und das ep 7 will be released in summer 2015,filming starts in may this year

  27. Harrison Ford Carrie fisher Mark Hamill Will bee W yes I will join star wars others movies will join yes ok star wars Tv series more yes ok wife she Luke Anakin I love you yes ok
