The past year has brought so many rumors about who may or may not be starring in Star Wars: Episode VII that it’s near-impossible to keep track of. Oscar-nominees, rising stars, lauded character actors – if you can name the Hollywood star off the top of your head, there’s a reasonable chance that at some point in 2013 they were either rumored for and/or confirmed to have auditioned for director J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars film.

Over the past couple days, we’ve begun to anticipate that the cast might be formally announced at long, long last on Star Wars day this year (i.e. May 4th), though photos of original Star Wars trilogy cast members Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in London – where Episode VII is filming – have already leaked online (though, that “secret” had been spoiled a long time ago… in a galaxy not so far away, at that). The studio and filmmaker powers that be have decided to release that information today, now that Abrams has met up with his main cast for Episode VII in London.

Here is the press release from Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, revealing the official main cast lineup for Episode VII:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Does this seating arrangement hold any clues as to characters and relationships?

Young Daisy Ridley (the Silent Witness and Mr. Selfridge TV series) is the expected unexpected newcomer on the list here, though we’d been hearing that Boyega (Attack the Block) and Driver (Girls) – both respected young actors whose stars are on the rise – could be part of the Episode VII cast for a while now, while last night the news of lauded character actor Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) joining the Star Wars crew made its way online. The same for Daniels, Mayhew, and Baker, whose returns as (respectively) C-3PO, Chewbacca and R2-D2 have been heavily rumored for months now.

Gleeson, alum of the Harry Potter franchise and star of the time-traveling romance About Time, is – in my opinion, anyway – an unexpected but fine addition to the Star Wars universe. Likewise, motion-capture guru Serkis (who reprises as the ape Casesar in Dawn of the Plant of the Apes this summer) and the legendary Swedish actor Max von Sydow (The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist, Minority Report) are surprising, yet very welcome casting additions. Will the pair put their respective skills to use as a CGI-enhanced alien and villainous Sith type, perhaps? Or does Abrams have something else in mind for the pair?

Andy Serkis (here seen in ‘King Kong’) is headed to the Star Wars universe

One last interesting thing to note (for the time being, that is): The Disney/Lucasfilm press release says that Abrams is directing from a screenplay that he wrote with Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) – with no mention of Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3), who penned the original Episode VII script draft. Mind you, that doesn’t mean Arndt won’t be receiving story credit for his contribution, but it is an indication of just how much rewriting Abrams and Kasdan did on Arndt’s earlier draft. Hopefully what we have now is an improvement on what we had under the guidance of an Oscar-winning writer like Arndt.

Star Wars: Episode VII is directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

  1. Wait, Moses from Attack the Block is cast? Fak yeah! i love that guy…

  2. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver as the twins!
    Domhnall Gleeson as Ben Skywalker
Thank god there’s no Zack Efron and no Benedict Cumberbatch

    • the rumor is, Adam will be a bad guy.

      • Jacen Solo is a sith in the books.

        • &$^% the books!!

Besides, they already said they are not going with the EU.

          Thank, JJ!!

          • I am just saying it possible for Adam Driver to be cast as Han’s son and a bad guy.

        • I am not saying that they won’t use the characters and their names but I think the books were declared invalid by Disney so they could have a better cinematic universe that isn’t so constricted.

        • Apparently you’ve been living under a rock for the 25 times that lucasfilm has said that they’re throwing out the EU.

  3. I hope after seeing Oscar Isaac listed here people who haven’t seen Inside Llewyn Davis will now go back and check it out.
He was amazing in that movie and of all the names here the one I’m most excited about.

    • Oscar Isaac is an amazing actor and I can’t wait to see ANYTHING he’s doing. He’s that good! He broke my heart in “Sucker Punch”.

  4. And Serkis as Yoda?

    • Chewbacca?

      • Peter Mayhew has and always will be Chewbacca.

        • Jabba’s ghost?

  5. worst movie casting ever!!

    star trek 4 life!

    • @ star wars sucks ball

Too bad but you should prepare for warp cause we’re about to go to “a galaxy far far away” Mr. Spock!

  6. Wow, Andy Serkis in Star Wars Episode VII. Be funny if he was cast as a Jedi: “These are not the droids you’re looking for, precious.”

    • “Let the force be with you, precious”

  7. Wow! Awesome cast!! Bring it on!! . As for Lando, I’m hoping that he shows up in Ep8.

    • Agreed. I do not understand the logic, of why he’s not going to be featured in Episode VII. SMDH.

    • Oh yeah! Lando isn’t in it! Totally missed that…

  8. Where’s the Colt 45 guy? :)

  9. Question to the original cast & other actors, did you get to sit next to then one you wanted after so many years or was is just it business as usual?

  10. Max von Sydow! whoot!

  11. Are they singing “We’re all in this together?” Oh wait, I don’t see Zach Efron…

  12. Well, if seating placement for the reading means anything (and it doesn’t necessarily at all) – Max Von Sydow is sitting next to Mark Hamill.

An idea for his character: perhaps he was a Padawan when “Order 66″ was executed, and managed to escape and hide throughout the reign of the Empire.

After Return of the Jedi – he sought out Luke, and has been his right-hand in rebuilding the Jedi Order.

(Question is – is he something else?)

    • “(Question is – is he something else?)”

It is Max Von Sydow. Still, he could be pure good guy too. As for being a padawan when order 66 came down, that doesn’t work with his age. He would have been a peer of Obi-Wan, so Knight or Master.

      • Um – it’s a movie. In movies they cast 30 year olds as high school students.

Given Mark Hamill is now 62 – is it seriously that big of a stretch in Movie Time to figure that Von Sydow’s character may have been about 18-20 at the time Luke was born?

  13. Andy Serkis = Son of Jar Jar = Epic

    • Yes, please!

  14. Where the f@&$ is Lando?!?!?!

  15. kinda hope Andy Serkis will be playing a human rather than being mo-cap, or maybe both like king kong

  16. So it will be a heavy male-driven movie?

  17. I am excited! If you notice, Daisy Riddley is sitting between Harisson Ford and Carrie Fisher. Culd it be because during the read-through, those three would have a lot of scenes together? I’m saying she plays their daughter!

  18. Who are the two with their backs to the camera on the closest right side sofa (or love seat)?

    • Kathleen Kennedy and maybe another producer

    • Writers/Producers/studio heads?

  19. Great supporting cast, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Max von Sydow in particular. A little disappointed with the supposed “unknowns”. This is going to be too similar to this decade’s young adult cash-in.

  20. This makes me insanely happy.

  21. Max von Sydow is definitely a Sith.

    • or he could be playing an Imperial Moff.

    • YES! Finally someone who thinks the same, Having Max Von Sydow play a good guy would be a waste here, I hope he’s a Darth Plagueis type of character.

  22. I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of internet casting rumors suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly debunked.

    • +1

  23. About the cast, I can say that I am thankful that they didn’t hire awful actors such as Efron or Pettyfer.

My only concern, is the stubbornness to say that they are no interested in using the EU when in fact they will use the traits of the characters but with different names. That is a double standard.

Many of the stories in the EU are much better than the scripts from the prequels.

    • First of all nobody gives a sh*t about the prequels right now. We are all trying to forget it.

Second why the hell would anyone want to pigeon hole themselves by having to adhere to the f*ed up EU. It would be a nightmare.

Third, Larry f*ing Kasdan wrote the film. I’m pretty sure that the guy who wrote Empire is going to give us a decent story.

  24. Domnhall Gleeson’s as great as his dad, Brendan. Nice casting there, my fave role I’ve seen him is the hacker that Lena Headey’s Ma-Ma kept bullying throughout Dredd.

Can’t wait to find out how Serkis is playing.

  25. Is that Sydow beside Hamill, or is it Anthony Daniels? Where is Kenny Baker?

    • You can’t see him? He’s standing behind R2. ;)

  26. I’m a little disappointed that Liam McIntyre isn’t in the movie. That was by far the best rumor.

    • That’s exactly what this picture will be. The story will likely begin with the traditional heroes in the thick of things, rebuilding the galaxy and tackling whatever the new threat is. By the end, the torch will be passed to the next generation, who will finish the quest in the next two installments. Stories are almost always better when they take the time to properly set things up in a way that makes logical and emotional sense. Done this way, the original heroes will get a respectful send-off while stepping back to let their successors take charge.

      Patience, young padawan.

  27. Just to add…Chewbacca actor Peter Mayew(?) is on the right so Serkis playing a new character,or maybe a mo capped Yoda.
