Millenium Falcon Original Star Wars Millenium Falcon Already Built For Star Wars: Episode 7?

Disney’s announcement last fall that they had acquired Lucasfilm and all of its intellectual properties was coupled with the exciting revelation that the Star Wars saga would continue in summer 2015 with Star Wars: Episode VII. J.J. Abrams was tapped to direct the project which was since been slightly delayed to December 18th, 2015.

Abrams is currently re-working the Episode 7 script by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) with the help of Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) while also hosting auditions for any and every actor you can think of. No official casting confirmations on the talent front have been made by Lucasilm or its parent company, but multiple reports put the big three (Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill) from the original trilogy as locks for return appearances.

With the extra few months of production time, Abrams promises the result will be a better final product for fans. For moviegoers disappointed in the style of the prequels, the key for the next trilogy is getting the tone right. Abrams himself acknowledges the importance of the new Star Wars movies feeling “real” again, and from a visual standpoint, that means creating environments and starships that are practical and gritty. The epitome of dirty design in space travel is of course the iconic Millenium Falcon, a part of the Star Wars universe that absolutely must return alongside the franchise.

According to Yahoo‘s inside sources, Han Solo’s always unreliable “fastest ship in the galaxy” is already built and sitting ready for when production moves to London’s Pinewood Studios early next year.

“A full-scale 1:1 Millennium Falcon has been built as well as the interiors of the ship for filming. The Falcon is done – inside and out. The sets were built off-site, ready to move when Lucasfilm/Bad Robot were ready to move into Pinewood.”

As we recently discussed on the site in regards to Marvel’s Ant-Man having to pull out the very same production facilities - where Disney and Marvel have already shot three other films -  Pinewood and its Shepperton Studios are at capacity, so the crew building asset off-site does make sense. We’ve also already seen a behind-the-scenes photo featuring everyone’s favorite three-wheeler droid so it’s likely a lot of the sets are currently being built.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has gone on record discussing the internal conversations at Lucasfilm about practical vs. CGI and re-discovering what made the original trilogy so special. They’ve also done extensive research on locations. Combining this early info with cinematographer Daniel Mindel confirming that Episode VII will not be shot digitally, we can hope for and expect a return to form for the live-action Star Wars series.

As for the Falcon, building a life-size replica for shooting is the coolest thing ever. Hopefully, the highly customized Corellian YT-1300 freighter has an important part to play in the next Star Wars trilogy. But even if it doesn’t, it’s a must for the Han Solo spinoff film.

Let’s hope they build a hangar full of lifesize X-Wings and maybe even the Jedi Academy too – that is, if Luke Skywalker builds one in the films like he does in the extended fiction. What locations and ships do you want to see return or be introduced in the next trilogy?

  1. I remember seeing the Falcon in Revenge of Sith for about a second or two. Bring them all back just cut all the retarded droids and we’re good to go.

    • i never noticed it, what part?

      • Right after the ship crash at the beginning with Anakin, Obi Wan, and Palpatine, when they return to the senate building, the Falcon is one of the ships landing at one of the lower landing pad areas of the senate building.

        • now i need to fire up the player and look for it before Mr.Lucas changes it.

in the time line of the movie the Falcon must be falling apart, worse then the clunker in the OT, time to call Lone Star and the Eagle 5 man haha

          • What if Star Wars Episode VII is actually Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money? That’d be dope, always wanted a Spaceballs sequel.

            • hahaa i wish man i wish

            • +100000000 I laughed my a$$ off to that one. You Sir maybe on to a winner

  2. Hope they have at least one awesome tracking shot where they walk all through the falcon.

  3. Yes! The Millenium Falcon. Coolest (fastest) ship in the Galaxy.

    Actually, this is my list of coolest starships, ever;

    1. The USS Enterprise NCC1701.

    2. The Millenium Falcon.

    3. The Eagle(s) from “Space 1999.” (not an actual ‘starship’)

    4. The Nostromo (Alien 79)

    5. Slave 1 (Boba Fett’s ship)

    • 1. Millennium Falcon
      2. USS Enterprise (2009/2013)
      3. Normandy SR-2

    • I always like the Defiant from DS9, can’t go wrong with a cloaking device.

    • Doesn’t get any better than the TARDIS, go anywhere and any time you like.

      • The SDF-1 from Robotech Macross Saga….super dimensional fortress…it turns into a freakin giant robot and has aircraft carriers for arms! The falcon though is a close second along with the TIE fighter and Slave 1. For pure beauty and aesthetics you cannot beat the Enterprise, those are some beautiful nacelles!! :)

    • My list is, more or less, the following:

      Millennium Falcon
      U.S.S. Enterprise 1701E
The reality-bending ship from the “Hitchhiker’s Guide” film
      The TARDIS
The starfighter from “The Last Starfighter” (“Death Blossom”, anyone?)
The mothership from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”

      Others too numerous to list…sigh.

    • My favourite Large Spaceships are:

      1. Battlestar Galactica (old version)
      2. The USS Enterprise (most versions)
      3. Sharlin class Warcruiser (Babylon 5 – Minbari ship)
      4. Yamato Battle Cruiser

      My favourite Medium Spaceships are:

      1. Millenium Falcon
      2. White Star (Babylon 5 – Minbari ship)
      3. UD4L Cheyenne (Aliens – Dropship)
      4. Shuttle Tydirium (Star Wars)

      My favourite Single/Twin/Triplet-seater Spaceships are;

      1. TIE Interceptor
      2. Macross VFs (all of them!)

  4. I would have to add a Klingon Bird of Prey and Vader’s personal fighter (I know, not a starship, but when I was school kid, I would always draw the curved wing ship during a boring class) to my top ten.

    • Right on! I have a model of Vader’s personal T.I.E. fighter.

Bird’s of Prey are awesome. They tend to be green. What’s not to love about that?

Too many cool ships to list.

As a kid I was an avid model maker. I still am, but these days I tend to collect pre made models.

I’d do anything to get a model of THE NOSTROMO.

      • Kryptonic, did you try Ebay?……also http://spaceart.de/produkte/al091-e.php has models you’re looking for.

        • Fernando;

THANK YOU a million for that link!

          I’m in love! Amazing stuff.

I’ve done some looking in the past but nothing ever led to E Bay. I went through the AMAZON route and didn’t find anything.

A little pricey but I’ve spent more for other models.

This may very well be a great Christmas gift 4 ME!

          Thanks again, mate.

  5. I’m gonna throw a sneaker in here, the Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix. Big and clunky maybe, but still a cool ship. I wouldn’t put it above the ones you guys have mentioned though.

    • Deadpoool;

The Nebuchadnezzar is cool for sure because it’s not your typical “ship” design. It’s pretty ground breaking in it’s design. It’s also pretty unique in that it travel through a kind of space that is not what is considered “outer” space.

But still a ship that travels THROUGH space….

      • I don’t remember what it was called, but I have always loved the ship the Robinsons traveled in, in the Lost in Space movie!

        • It’s called the Jupiter 2. Cheers from Australia!

  6. Although it would be wildy ambitious, and slightly concerning, a 1:1 replica of the DEATH STAR would be awesome. I guess it’s strictly neither a ship nor a location, but it’s pretty close to being both at the same time.

  7. Make a life size death star !!! :D

  8. Just like R2D2 + C3PO .. The Flacon is a sign that Solo will be in the movie :) … or Lando haha

    • Lando wearing Han’s clothes.

  9. Real sets, life-size structures, less CGI…

    Awesomesauce!

    • And Good script, good directing, good acting, good dialogue, believable characters, less over the top action and a decent plot. Awesomesauce!

  10. SR, this is old. do not get behind in the -right on time- news.

    • Nah, it’s from the day before Thanksgiving holiday and we’ve not had this discussion on the site.

We don’t just do news though, friend. We editorialize and discuss!

    • It’s news to me dude. I don’t have time to sit around on the internet when I’m on set literally all day.

  11. I wanna see a Borg cube show up and assimilate those Imperial pussies.

  12. Is the engine going to look like a brewery and the rest of the ship going to be lit up like an Apple store ?

    • Personally, I love the look of the current Enterprise. It looks exactly like what I think a flagship in Starfleet would look like considering futuristic looks and technology, but that’s me.

That said, I think the Millennium Falcon in Episode VII will be clean and updated thanks to the prestige and general wealth of the Solos in the years after Episode VI.

      • I’m okay with the enterprise. I like the engineering part with the “spiraly circles” anyway.

  13. Hmmmm…..the pic looks so cool.

  14. Coolest spacecraft?
    Discovery from 2001
    The Falcon
    Galactica
    Enterprise

    • I’ve always like the Excelsior from Star Trek, as well. I hope that we get a version of it in the new films.

  15. I’d like to see a location somewhere high in the mountains, like the Alps or Rockies. Someplace coastal would also be new for Star Wars (aside from Kashyyyk), perhaps Iceland. Also, I would like to see a return to the jungle Temple on Yavin IV, *if* they set the Jedi academy there as in the Expanded Universe novels.

For ships…everything that I know is from the EU, so I doubt much will translate. One thing is that the X-Wings should be newer models, such as the XJ. The Falcon can be round because it’s a unique ship, but in 30 years, military technology will have been updated.

As far as other ships, it would be cool to see Lando’s ship the Lady Luck, Skipray Blastboats, or maybe something like the Imperial World Devastators.

    • The Falcon can be *Around

      • Lets not forget about Gundam O from Endless Waltz and Vultron Lion Force or the Outrider! And those awesome space shuttles from Armageddon. Yeah i agree the new one needs more practical effects. I hope the release a picture of the Falcon on set!

  16. Event Horizon makes my top 10…

  17. I just hope they have got around to fixing the hyperdrive… lol

  18. If they have a good story they simply need to avoid the video game look associated with the prequels. First off the best looking of the prequels is Episode I. I firmly believe this due to being filmed on 35mm and not digital. Episode II does not look great, but technology had greatly improved by Episode III. I have all films on blu ray and without a doubt the best looking films are the originals. The ESB and ROTJ look amazing. Do not under estimate the look and feel of practical effects. If they can have that look in the new movies with a decent story and solid acting then I want to see it.

  19. Imagine if they pull a swerve on fans and have this be the funeral ship for Han Solo in Episode 7

  20. A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the Millenium Falcon both the nama and its beautiful design was burned into my mind. Next comes the Vipers of the original BSG. The Eagles of Space 1999 are also nostalgically nice.

The Eagles of Space 1999 are also nostalgically nice. And who can forget Buck Roger’s 21st century fighters ? My first love is still the original MF. Warts and all

  22. This is great. It has been a dream of mine to make a life size replica of the Millenium Falcon in my backyard, if I had insane amount of money to do so. It by far my favorite ship. I also like the firefly ship is well. But nothing compared to the falcon. JJ is a true fan. I think this film will work.

  23. I watched Episodes III-VI when Spike had a SW marathon during Thanksgiving weekend. It reinforced how much I enjoy watching those four movies. I’m extremely excited to see Episode VII.
