Last week brought the unfortunate news that Harrison Ford was injured, during filming on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. The latest update on the situation reveals that the actor has been hospitalized, due to him having broken his ankle during the incident. The almost 72-year old Ford will be back on his feet in time (literally), but it may take longer than previously anticipated – though, Episode VII director J.J. Abrams is expected to carry on with production as planned, albeit with the order of filming scenes changed up a bit.

It’s rumored that the Episode VII script by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) – revised from an earlier draft by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) – includes expanded roles for the established, fan-favorite Star Wars characters of Luke, Leia, and Han Solo – with Ford as Solo rumored to have the largest role of the trio. It’s still reasonable to assume that, in order to lay the foundation for the Star Wars franchise to continue on for years to come, the majority of Episode VII‘s running time will be devoted to introducing the younger generation of characters – as opposed to, focusing on its seasoned veterans.

THR is confirming that Ford injured his foot on the door of the set for the Millennium Falcon (Han Solo’s highly-treasured “piece of junk” spaceship), and that he may miss as much as two months (eight weeks, to be exact) of filming due to his injuries – as was first reported by such sites as the British tabloid The Mirror. As was mentioned before, however, certain other cast members no doubt have scenes without Ford to film; such material will therefore be shot while Ford recovers, so that Episode VII may still make its December 2015 release date – without having to rush elements of production, that is.

The ‘Episode VII’ Cast with J.J. Abrams

Among the fresher faces in Episode VII is one Daisy Ridley, a British actress and relative newcomer who, simply judging by her appearance, could feasibly be playing the daughter of Han and Leia (Carrie Fisher); if she is indeed sharing protagonist duties with John Boyega (Attack the Block) as rumored, that would also explain why Ford could have a major role in the story (e.g. Han lending a helping hand to his kid on her adventures).

Of course, there are other popular theories about the young cast members of Episode VII and who they’re playing – such as the rumor that Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) is portraying the son of Luke (Mark Hamill). Most Star Wars movies in the past have featured multiple subplots, which necessitate such key players to head off to different planets and places in space; assuming that tradition continues with Episode VII, there should be entire narrative threads that can be filmed without Ford needing to be on set.

Having said all that – we wish Ford a speedy recovery for his own sake, and hope that this is the last Episode VII-related news of this unfortunate ilk that we have to report hereon out.

  1. It’s unfortunate for Harrison Ford but at the same time it’s frustrating how much he seems to have held up production. After they finally got him to sign he’s out for two months?

    • Oh, I know, darn him. I just know he broke his ankle on purpose to do this too, it’s just like him.

      • Exactly. Selfish b@stard made his 70 year old bones brittle on purpose.

He must loathe playing one of the coolest, most iconic characters in film history.

    • He doesn’t hold-up anything. As it was stated before, the filming order will get changed a bit, which means that scenes that don’t involve him will be shot first. No big deal at all, that has happened countless times before with various movies.

  2. I think the “all star wars films have to be may releases” trolls hurt ford on purpose to try to delay the film nice try

  3. I worry about Ford… I hope he’ll heal up ok. He’s getting pretty up there in age.

  4. Yup, two months, as I said. Unfortunately I have experienced a broken anke myself. They had to stabilize it surgically with metal pieces (which had to be removed after a year), and the joint muscles are being weakened considerably during the recuperation period, which requires a lot or rehab work to get back to normal. It wasn’t easy at age 17 and it probably doesn’t get easier when these numbers are reversed (funny coincidence).

    • We really don’t know how severe his injury really is. However, most indications point towards a “lighter” break.

  5. Dammit! thats too bad.
If he has one of the main roles, its obvious the film will be delayed considerably.

  6. Delay the release until May 4th 2016!!! It is and always will be Star Wars day :)

  7. Are u guys illiterate they just said the film will not be delayed

    • +1 as the kids say.

  8. He survived 3 marriages. Surely he can survive a busted ankle.
