Chloë Moretz Responds to ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Casting Rumor

Published 1 year ago by

Back when Matthew Vaughn was tipped to direct Star Wars: Episode VII (before J.J. Abrams took the job), there was a rumor going around that he had pitched a version where Chloë Moretz – star of Vaughn’s Kick-Ass comic book movie – would portray the protagonist; most likely, a young Jedi and daughter to Han Solo and Leia Skywalker (i.e. some variation of the character named Jaina in the Star Wars “Expanded Universe” books that take place post-Return of the Jedi).

Moretz is in the middle of a promotional tour for the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 (where she reprises as Mindy Macready a.k.a. Hit-Girl), which has provided reporters with the chance to ask her about the possible Episode VII casting. No surprise, Moretz told MTV that she’s interested in joining the Star Wars franchise, but neither confirmed nor denied the Vaughn story. Then again, the rumor – assuming it’s true – never said that Moretz spoke to Vaughn or Lucasfilm/Disney about Episode VII.

The leaked Episode VII casting breakdown called for two actresses to play female characters in their late teens, while using terms like “fit” “independent” and “tough” to suggest what career type they might have (see: fighter pilot, Jedi, etc.). It’s not yet apparent which one of the young people that will be introduced in Abrams’ Star Wars movie is going to serve as the film’s central protagonist – like Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy and then his son Luke in Episodes IV-VII. However, there is a reasonable chance that the Episode VII script by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Oblivion) could revolve around one of the new non-male players – with additional supporting roles for the returning Star Wars cast members.

Moretz has proven that she can play the hard-hitting fighter archetype in the Kick-Ass movies. In addition, she has demonstrated the range of her dramatic chops in films like Let Me In, Hugo, and Hick, while her upcoming role in the new Carrie adaptation will allow Moretz to cut her teeth by playing a different kind of dark and emotionally-challenging protagonist. Suffice it to say, if there’s a substantial part for a young actress in Episode VII, then Moretz would be an excellent choice to tackle the role – especially if the storyline takes its cues from the “Legacy of the Force” arc from the E.U. (wherein the Jaina character must battle her twin brother Jacen, who has fallen to the Dark Side).

As for the prospect of a Star Wars movie featuring a female protagonist: Lucasfilm President and Episode VII executive producer Kathleen Kennedy has addressed the need to respect tradition – which includes using a healthy mix of practical and digital effects in Episode VIIand to provide the masses with new complicated stories and characters that are not cookie-cutter versions of their predecessors – which is to say, having a female lead would be one way of accomplishing just that.

Moreover, both the Star Wars movies and E.U. examine personal relationships between family members in a Shakespearean fashion (no Luke/Leia jokes now…), especially those between children and their parents; for example, Anakin and his mother in the prequel trilogy, followed by Luke and his father in the original trilogy, and so on. There is no reason to believe that storytelling practice has to change or be lost, just because an actress such as Moretz could wind up leading the sci-fi juggernaut forward at this point.

What do you think – do you want to see Moretz play the protagonist or some other important character in Star Wars: Episode VII?

  1. god yes. that would be epic

  2. No! These movies are legendary I don’t want them ruined by someone who’s already a huge star! I agree Chloe is a really good actress but it will be another Chloe film! She could play the part of young Jaina in VII, but have a differant actress play the grown up version of Jaina.

    • Please. As if Natalie Portman hadn’t already became a huge star in “The Professional” before she did Episode 1. And surely Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t a huge star of COUNTLESS films (Including “Pulp Fiction”) before the same film. Or Liam Neeson. Or Ewan McGregor. Or Jimmy Smits. Or Alec Guinness. Or Billy Dee Williams. Or..you know what if you don’t get the point by now you never will. To quote an Episode 1 line “You protest too much.”

  3. A fantastic Actress and would be a asset to the Star wars franchise.
you go Girl..!!! Can’t wait to see you in it. :)

  4. I think moretz would be good in the movie I’d like to see her as one of the main characters because I always felt that with the originals it was Luke Han and Leia who were the main characters so I’d like to see Chloe in it alongside some other characters I want some of the other leads to be unknown actors and actresses I always loved that with the originals.

  5. Hey guys here are some guys from you tube that have come up with twenty actors and twenty actresses that they would like to see in the next star wars feel free to watch if you are interested :)

  6. I’m biased. I have loved star wars since I was a little kid. The second trilogy had a lot of problems looking at it critically, but being star wars, I still enjoyed the heck out of it.
Chloe Moretz is an awesome actress, with multiple films worth the action star experience. I have no doubt she could pull it off. Would I like to see an actress I totally adore, in a movie franchise that I totally nerd out on? Well freaking DUH! I would watch that trilogy and buy is on blue even if it sucked, for three reasons. 1 star wars rocks. 2 Disney generally does really good work, look at the marvel movies they had hands on, and 3 Any performance Chloe Moretz has given has been totally worth see. Even that scetch in movie 41 I think it was, and the scarey child star scetch I saw her in on funny or die. She just rocks.

  7. I think chloe would be good for the role, she has already proved herself as an actor… both action and drama including horror so the movie will be awwsome with her in it.

    • Hey, yo, Hi. All the same, unknown actors would provide the unpredictability factor but that’s the least of J.J. Abram’s problem.
