Carrie Fisher Confirms Return For ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ [Updated]

Mark Hamill Carrie Fisher Harrison Ford Goofing Carrie Fisher Confirms Return For Star Wars: Episode 7 [Updated]

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in the fall, the new leadership, quarterbacked by Lucasilm’s new President Kathleen Kennedy, made their intentions very clear. Star Wars is not only going to get new movies, but it’s going to continue the story crafted by George Lucas, meaning familiar universe, familiar timeline and familiar characters.

Mark Hamill confirmed that he’s in talks to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker and Harrison Ford has already reportedly signed to return as Han Solo. And if there’s a Han Solo, there’s a Princess Leia, and that holds true when the Star Wars saga returns in 2015 with Episode VII.

In a recent interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, Carrie Fisher straight-up confirmed a multitude of rumors and reports that she will be reprising her career-defining role as Leia Organa in first of many upcoming Star Wars movies. When asked if she could confirm her return, Fisher simply replied with “yes.”

And to follow up, Fisher gave her thoughts jokingly on what Episode 7′s Leia may be like:

“Elderly. She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home [laughs].

I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”

An aged Leia and Solo would likely be embracing leadership positions in the New Republic, born of the ashes of the Empire after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. If the films follow the multitude of the Star Wars expanded universe stories, Leia may have several children who themselves could be main characters in the series going forward: The twins Jaina & Jacen, and their youngest, Anakin, named after [Vader voice] you know who.

As for Leia specifically, she may play a similar supporting role to the Mon Mothma character of the original trilogy – with more screen time undoubtedly – but in either case, it’s pleasing to see Lucasfilm and Disney honoring the franchise roots and maintaining the continuity in the most authentic way possible.

With the main three characters all but officially confirmed by the studio to return, what about other characters like Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Wedge Antilles (Dennis Lawson)? And are Fisher and co. back for the entire trilogy (Episodes 7-9) or just Episode 7?

Count on the Millenium Falcon and some X-Wings returning to the big screen as well. Let’s just hope they don’t get the “iBridge” Star Trek treatment. Follow me on Twitter @rob_keyes and let me know what other character you want to see return!

[Update: Carrie Fisher's rep tells CNN that "she was joking" and that "nothing has been announced." Sounds like an announcement will come eventually though.]

Star Wars Episode 7 will hit theaters in 2015.

  1. Ohhh snap!

    • Why has Harrison Ford always been such an immense a**hole?

  2. still wonder how they can appear with guns, jedi swords, fly space-ship with action pack in this age…

    • You should watch movies like RED and the Expendables. If those movies have taught me anything, it would be to never underestimate the bad@$$ery of an elderly person.

    • I assume it’s a small role or something, and she’s like a celebrity amongst the new jedi or something like that. Just my guess though, I doubt she’ll have a large role in the plot (the same for Luke and MAYBE Han as Ford is just still too popular).

    • You don’t have to be nimble or young to fire a blaster kid!

  3. Ugh.

    • Aren’t you a little short for a comment?

  4. Still waiting for the original, unaltered, trilogy to be released on Bluray. All this new episodes stuff doesn’t interest me nearly as much as that.

  5. Great news !
Now lets just hope J.J manages to give this movie a warm feeling opposed to the cool more emotionless tone he usually does ! Never was a fan of his Color tones he is using !

  6. Bipolar episodes and all.

    • @ Cody

Ha Ha Ha… you are the first person I have seen to respond this way. I am sorry but I am afraid I see it the same way you do. She has gone kind of crazy after her Star Wars films so this should be interesting.

      • She is carrie fisher the hut.

  7. As long as she doesn’t wear that sexy bikini from Return. I’m fine with this.

    • @ Wally

I started to agree with you until I read the part where you admitted that you though it was sexy.

  8. Then my other argument is, Padme hardly aged. So it’s only relevant to recast the role for Princess Leia. Find someone who looks alike and younger. Same alien genes, she’s gotta age slowly. They better address this in the film.

    • Look what they did for Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy, they took 30 years off of him using makeup and it looked awesome! I know they are all old geezers these days but im not worried at all about making them look spry and sumwhat youthful, just my opinion though.

  9. Maggie Gyllenhaal anyone??? Anyone???

    • SOMEONE! SOMEONE!!! SOMEONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • *singsong* SomWHHEEEEEEERRRRREEEEE!!!!!

    • Sure, why not. but too late now.

  10. She looks like Bruce Campbell from Escape from L.A. in that above picture.

  11. I am excited to see the old cast return, even in small roles.

  12. Awesome

  13. In the top picture it looks like Han Solo either found a Quarter or stepped in some chewing gum.

  14. I’m so glad they’re stocking the movie with seasoned, professional actors who have been keeping their talents sharp…oh wait

    • HA!

  15. ….okay, what is the PLOT of this film?

  16. I think she’s too fat to play Princess Leia anymore…..I would’ve gone with Carrie Anne Moss

    • Just like other people get too fat to be themselves at an older age? People, I’m sure they old characters will not be the main focus of the story, so relax. I’m sure even an overweight Leia will be fine in the context of the new trilogy.

      • The story will be crafted with the aging of the characters taken into account. I just saw Carrie play a wisecracking Ghost of Christmas in her latest film “It’s Christmas, Carol” a few months ago. She’ll do just fine as Leia in her middle age.

    • She plays the same character only 40 years later (as far as I know), you seriously want some 30-something super thin actress in the role of a Mother who has adult children?

She played Leia when Leia was young, now Leia is older (again remember several decades went by, she’s supposed to be in a Grandma age), so she plays her again. If the movie would pick up where ep 6 left off, a recast would make sense, but it’s not.

They’re going to be the supporting cast, obviously. What is with some people on this site, thinking that actors should be tossed away once they’re past 50 or a certain weight and replaced with young meat?

Not just 20-year-old model-thin actresses are allowed in movies you know.

  17. I’m glad the old gang is coming back, but how I wish she had aged a little better. Bad plastic surgery is a b****.

  18. Nothing a quick Hollywood diet, a ton of makeup , bulky clothes, and possibly a little CGI, can’t help. No way they are the headlining stars right? Someone else has to be running around chopping down storm troopers in the star role.

  19. So I guess this pretty much confirms Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill as well?
    Sweet.

  20. I am very happy about this news. The big trio has to be in the new movie :D

  21. I am happy to see them back. Wouldn’t be the same without them.

  22. Its truning out to be some sort of reunion special all in all..

  23. Are they paying her in crack ?

    • Does that imply paying her by every inch of her ass because it got huge? Or you mean literally paying her with crack?

  24. This is cool news, just no bikini please.

Shell just probably be a senator or something.

  25. Wow. I’m sure your mothers would all be proud to hear you talk like this. Score another win for the enlightenment and sensibility of the Internet.

Do an IMDb check and be accurate about what you say: of the the trio, Harrison Ford has probably worked THE LEAST in the time since Star Wars. Hamill and Fisher have done voice work and cameos on so many shows it’s ridiculous. They NEVER STOPPED WORKING.

Oh, but who cares about that – let’s bash a woman for getting older, then complain that they should replace her with a younger, slimmer woman. Like I said: I’m sure your mothers would all applaud you.

    #Chivalry2013

    • And just for clarity about who has worked the most:

      Ford: 69 projects
      Fisher: 83
      Hamill: 244

      #Getyourfactsright

      • Agree with Kofi!

Have some respect for what Disney is at least attempting to do, which is keep the continuity or else it is not Stars Wars, it would be just another space epic.

      • Okay, not that I don’t agree with the spirit of what you’re saying, but are you really comparing Ford’s two to three months of work (and that just on shooting) on a Last Crusade or an Ender’s Game to Hamill’s 4 or 5 days every two years on a Metalocalypse? Is that a place where you really want to go?

        • The point was that they have all been steadily working.

Whoo . . . the ageism and sexism in these comments is making my head spin.

  26. While I’m looking forword to this , I’m still concerned. Although I did like JJ’s StarTrek. I just think he’s going to , use the same set design as he did in Trek. Lots of Flare.

  27. Billy Dee Williams has to return as Lando Calrissian.

    • 100,000,000,000% agreed! Why has nobody talked about Billy Dee Williams?!?! I mean come on you have to have Lando right?!?

  28. Please bring back JarJar Binks!!!!!! MeSA want mooy mooy

  29. I know for sure all three are getting in shape for this.
Hamill can be like obi wan kenobi.
