More than a decade after his death, Darth Maul is making an animated comeback on Star Wars: The Clone Wars – well, half of him anyway.

The last time Star Wars fans saw the devilish, tattooed Sith, he was literally falling apart while plummeting to his supposed demise at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, it would seem the Dark Side of the Force comes with the added benefit of brushing off being cleaved in two like it was a paper cut.

For Maul, his survival is almost as implausible as his popularity – which seems to be based on equal parts love for his design, and disappointment that his sole appearance in the six-film saga added up to mere minutes of actual screen time (can you say Boba Fett?).

The hint at the high-kicking Sith’s return began in January during an episode of The Clone Wars wherein Maul’s patterned mug appeared in Mother Talzin’s crystal ball – telling Savage Opress of a familial connection and acting as major teaser for fans of the show.

Jump forward to spring 2012 – just weeks after Maul’s big screen appearance will be back in theaters with a 3D upgrade – and Cartoon Network will be serving up a chilly helping of revenge for Obi-Wan and his Padawan Anakin.

The producers and writers of Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars are hopeful that Darth Maul’s return will once more shine the spotlight on the character, and according to Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni, act as a mea culpa to fans from the creator himself, George Lucas - for the lack of attention given the character:

“I found it funny in The Phantom Menace when Darth Maul got cut in half. I thought George was definitively saying to the fans, ‘There’s no way this character is coming back. This is not a Boba Fett/Sarlacc Pit situation where, because of fan love, Boba gets out of that thing any number of ways.’ Fast-forward ten-years, and I’m the one to bring Maul back.”

Take a look at the teaser for the return of Darth Maul:

The next step, according to Filoni, will be to convince fans that Maul’s continued existence actually plays with established Star Wars canon. Take for instance the scene in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, where Darth Sidious mentions the Dark Side’s ability to stave-off death, as part of his initial sales pitch to Anakin. Sidious presumably puts those abilities into effect after Obi-Wan removes appendages 2 – 4 from Anakin, then letting him roast to perfection.

Provided Filoni is able to get them on board, fans will be pleased to know that Maul’s return won’t be some flash-in-the-pan story. “There’s a lot of ground that has not been covered as far as Darth Maul is concerned, so there’s a lot of room to grow with him.”

The biggest draw for Filoni is getting to play with a character whose post-Clone Wars story is largely unknown. Though accounts of Maul surviving have been told elsewhere, a statement from Filoni suggests Star Wars: The Clone Wars may be moving in a different direction altogether. “Here, we’re moving forward with Maul. He’s more than ten years older than he was in The Phantom Menace. That’s immensely satisfying, because now nobody knows what’s going to happen to him. I know, but nobody else does.”

  1. This is awesome I always thought Maul’s screen time was cut way too short, the character had so much more potential I can’t wait to watch his return I’ve watched the clone wars nightsisters 3 part episodes so many times its really good .

  2. Ummm…

look at Vader and Grievous, then tell me how implausable it is to keep Maul alive.

Hell, look at the clone army. All you need is a blood sample and you can reconstruct him.

  3. Those are tattoos?

  4. That trailer almost makes it seem like a horror movie is coming out.

  5. Man, I’ve been so exited about this! (ever since I saw that little tease at the end of the episode) :D
Can’t wait to see his return.

And as to how “plausible” it is for Maul to still be alive: I completely agree with “adam”, if Aniken (who got dismembered and was burnt by lava) and Grievous (who’s basically just a head in a robot’s body) can survive, then ANYONE can, IMO.

  6. I don’t think it’s that implausible for him to return (with robo-legs). I mean he was cut in half, but maybe his anatomy makes him not need that half to survive… I don’t know

  7. THEY NEED TO DO SOMETHING, BECAUSE SO FAR, AND I’M SURE I’M NOT ALONE WHEN I SAY THIS, SEASON 4 HAS REALLY SUCKED SINCE IT STARTED 5 WEEKS AGO. BORING LACKLUSTER EPISODES, I REALLY HOPE THIS SHOW ENDS AT THE END OF THIS SEASON WITH A 3 PART FINALE LEADING UP TO THE BEGINNING OF EP 3. I THINK A FIFTH SEASON WOLUD JUST BE DRAGGING IT OUT. AND AS FAR AS THE LIVE ACTION TV SERIES GOES, IT WILL NOT WORK. IT’S TIME TO TAKE ELEMENTS FROM THE 50+ STORIES LUCAS HAS FOR THE SHOW AND INCORPORATE THEM INTO A NEW TRILOGY 7,8,9 WITH A NEW DIRECTOR AND SCREENWRITER.

    • I’m with you on the fact that this season has sucked big time so far (while I love R2D2 and C3PO, I REALLY don’t want to see a bunch of episodes where they go on their own “adventures”).
I want CLONE BATTLES and JEDI VS. SITH

I’m actually hoping they make a season 5 so that they can redeem themselves… then again, season 4 just started (we should give it some more time to see if it gets better)
      – It’s been the same with “The Big Bang Theory”: so far, the season has sucked, but the newest episode was actually pretty funny (I’m just hoping it stays that way ;))

So @ERIK J KELLY: just give it some more time and lay off the caps-lock ;)

      • Wow, this season has been amazing! Everybody is entitled to their opinion but really I just don’t see how they could cram any more action into a 25minute long episode with out it turning into a montage of explosions rather then a coherent story arc.

  8. In the novels there was Luuke Skywalker. He was cloned from Luke’s hand (cut off in the ESB fight with Vader). This could very well be the same method of resurrecting the “dead” Sith Lord. It is the CLONE Wars after all.

    • There’s something really nasty and visceral about that that I like. It suggests that the resurrection of evil is ‘all too easy’, hehe.

Actually it reminds me of what was so horrific about the old Dracula movies… ie. that he simply couldn’t be destroyed completely, just incapacitated indeterminately…but if some blood just happened to fall in the wrong place.

If The Sith too can have the power to control the Midichlorians and pervert their life bringing function into keeping dead flesh alive (see: The Emperor and his masochistic bliss post the Mace Windu battle)… then ‘Evil’ can be resurrected from even one cell if it contains enough Midichlorians.

      Is that sick or what?!

  9. Fail.

  10. I could swear that I read someone joking about this happening some months ago in a forum!

  11. Darth Maul needs more then this. He needs a spin off movie.

  12. To call Darth Maul’s popularity implausible seems a bit inaccurate to me.

When I first say the character in the trailer way back when,it automatically reminded me of how cool some of the villains in the Star Wars universe can be.

Cool design+a double ended light saber is an automatic win.The Lucas did the same thing with him that he did with Boba Fett(my all time favorite character),and killed him off in the lamest way.

I’m glad that they are finding a way to bring him back, because it would be another really cool character that’s gone to waste.

  13. the comic book design was better and story mual looks dumb in this 3D

  14. I think this qualifies as, “Jumping the Shark”

Anakin’s survival after being dismembered had more to do with him luckily having all his appendages cauterized by the lava. He would have bled out otherwise. Being cut in two on the other hand is a completely different animal……..“no, I’m ok…….all I gotta do is hold all my guts and blood in with my hands there”…..”oh that 50 story fall was nothing even in my ‘compromised’ position, catlike reflexes and all even without legs! (yeah, I’m that good)” /rolls eyes

    • LOL! He wouldn’t have bled out! The high temperature from both the lightsaber (which cut of Anakin’s arm and foot) and the lava burned his skin so much that the wound “melted together”, if that makes any sense for you to understand. Have no idea how to properly pronounce this in English, but I can tell you this: He wouldn’t have bled to death, THAT would be unrealistic in those circumstances.

      • Sorry but lightsabers are not “hot” so they don’t automatically cauterize wounds. The mythology behind them is the focused light of the crystal speeds up the kinetic energy of the surrounding molecules. There may cause a partial cauterization due to instant blood clotting but a grievous would will definitely bleed out.

        • I have to agree with the cauterization aspect. There was no blood when Maul was cut in half. I would think there would be one hell of a mess for the service droids to clean up if the wound had not been cauterized. Lightsabers are basically pure plasma and are hotter than just about anything. There is a force field around the blade that protects the user from its immense heat, and also helps gives it its shape.
“Although lightsabers are a superior weapon, there is still nothing quite as satisfying as feeling the warm spray of blood when one cleaves through one’s enemy with a real sword.” ―Komok-Da

  15. It actually isn’t really that implausible to think Darth Maul would survive after being cut in half. After all, his wound would’ve been immediately cauterized by the lightsaber… but surviving the fall? That’s a little insane.

It is good to see a character that was neglected in the movies get a little attention now. It’ll be funny to see if he gets cut in half again lol

    • Incorrect. (see above)

You can disbelieve me all you want but I would suggest doing some googling first ;)

  16. Burning question: who’s doing the voice?

  17. This guy wasn’t the first to bring Maul back. In 2005, Dark Horse released Star Wars: Visionaries which consisted of various written and drawn stories by various authors and artists. One of the comic stories in it was entitled Old Wounds, in which Darth Maul, after having cybernetic legs replacing the ones he had lost, hunts down Obi-Won. The story takes place shortly after Obi-Won brought Luke to the Lars homestead. This story is just as canon as The Clone Wars IMO (if Ahsoka is allowed to exist and be overpowered, this story can exist too) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Old_Wounds

  18. This guy was definitly dead.

  19. Season 3 of clone wars also had a lacklustre start before picking up momentum to great effect halfway through, so hopefully this season will do the same.

  20. I love Maul but…

Come on! Cut and in half and falling a billion feat. Qui Gon just got stabbed in the stomach and he died.

    This is desperate.

  21. I heard he is going to be wheeling around on a skateboard and challenges obi wan to a half pipe showdown

  22. Lucasfilm also toyed with having the Yuuzhan Vong clone Darth Vader and bring him back to life during the New Jedi Order series. Lucas was no thrilled when pitched the idea, so it died.

I can’t imagine why Lucas would allow anyone to bring back Darth Maul in a similarly hokey way.

They might as well bring back Darth Bane while they are at it.

  23. I’m not to sure about this Maul being bring back from the dead… Clone wars series should end before going to far with ideas like this. Why G. Lucas doesn’t go on with the tv show ?

  24. Noooooo. Episode 1 lame. lame lame lame lame..did i say lame? lol. 15 year wait for jar jar binks. episode 1 needs to be viewed as a mistake by lucas and pretend never happened.

  25. Just watched the 2 part season finale of the clone wars and the return of Darth Maul and it was awesome. Finally my favorite SITH returns I’m so looking forward to season 5, I hope Maul will be better utilized in this series next season unlike his debut in episode 1. I hope next season Maul appears with his black cloak and hopefully repairs his lightsaber “at last we will have revenge” :)

  26. When is the trailer for season 5 going to be shown? It’s killing me not knowing what to expect next season.

Well…I expect Maul and Savage to unleash their wrath upon the galaxy. And maybe a litte Dooku vs Maul action. BUT I NEED A TRAILER!
