The first official gameplay trailer for Star Wars : Battlefront II has arrived, teasing 40 years of battles. As part of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, a new story group was initiated to unify the canon of the Star Wars universe across all platforms. While this meant many fan-favorite stories from the Expanded Universe were left behind, it also meant all new content moving forward would be canon. Along with the films, books, comics, and TV shows, the new universe also has a game series to further flesh things out and give fans a new way to interact with the franchise.

The first Battlefront had its pros, but a rushed production led to it not quite measuring up to expectations. That all looks set to change with Battlefront II, which has already promised to be a much larger game than its predecessor. It will also feature a number of exciting new multiplayer campaigns, plus an intriguing story following a new Imperial character. We've seen some of the action teased already, thanks to the first trailer for the game and a batch of images. Now, we've finally got our first official look at the gameplay.

EA released the new gameplay trailer for Battlefront II [above] as part of their EA Play event at the E3 convention. The trailer offers a lot to be excited about, from new multiplayer battles to a tease of what to expect in the solo campaign. The best part about the trailer, however, is that it finally confirms the massive scope of the new game. From the droid army of the Separatists going to war with the Clone Troopers to the Millennium Falcon and a squadron of X-Wings battling TIEs and Star Destroyers.

Aside from 40 years worth of stories to pull from for combat missions, a number of familiar characters will be joining the game. After some light droid versus clone action, we see Darth Maul arrive in style as his lightsaber careens through the battle. As the trailer goes on, we get Maul fighting against Yoda, Rey battling Kylo Ren, and shots of Chewie and Boba Fett in battle. Even if you're not a fan of the prequels, it's hard to argue that the inclusion of Maul and the possibility of well-known Clone Troopers isn't exciting.

Speaking of the prequels, there's also been a rumor that Jar Jar Binks could be playable in the new game. While this trailer doesn't confirm it, his appearance would certainly be an interesting addition. Though he's shown his merit in battle before, playing as Jar Jar seems more of a novelty than anything.

Luckily, the appearance of Jedi, Sith, and other favorite characters makes the game look like a must-have. Add in the interesting new campaign mode and all the multiplayer potential, and Battlefront II will be essential for Star Wars fans and gamers of all stripes.
