New rumors from Star Wars: The Last Jedi concern the tools Luke Skywalker has with him on the planet Ahch-To, as well as what his mission towards the end of the film is. Ever since Mark Hamill appeared in what amounted to a wordless cameo in the final scene of The Force Awakens, fans have been eager to see the original trilogy protagonist in action during these new sequels. Fortunately, Luke is going to be a major part of Episode VIII and factors heavily into the story. However, the character has changed greatly since he was celebrating with Ewoks on Endor in Return of the Jedi, and Luke has a much different outlook on life. In the Last Jedi trailer, he said it was time for the Order to end - a statement that sent viewers into a frenzy.

Lucasfilm has done a phenomenal job keeping Luke hidden behind a thick veil of secrecy since they started producing the modern movies, so viewers have had to rely on the ever-churning rumor mill to learn possible information about the old hero. Skywalker has unsurprisingly been the subject of much speculation already, including a tease of an action sequence and his new creature companions while in exile. Now, the latest reports detail the gear Luke will use in the new film and hint he could have Supreme Leader Snoke in his sights before Last Jedi concludes.

According to Making Star Wars, Luke is in possession of a compass, a backpack, and a walking stick while embarking on a journey on presumably Ahch-To. The outlet had descriptions for each. The compass is called "the most beautiful piece of craftsmanship" ever seen in the movies and has wording in the Aurebesh language on the inside. Its exterior is a box with a blue orb on the top, and it opens to reveal the compass. Another interesting bit of information about it is that the compass is apparently "important," but it's unknown if it has some sort of mystical attributes or is just a gorgeously constructed tool to help its user find his or her way. Luke's backpack and walking stick are more typical from the sound of things; the former is orange and holds a water bottle and a net with kindling and the latter is just a wooden stick. Skywalker also has a "cattle-prod type weapon" to deal with any pests he may encounter. Interestingly enough, there's no word on whether or not Luke has a lightsaber yet.

Rey training in Star Wars The Last Jedi

One of the more interesting reveals is a rumor that towards the end of Episode VIII"Luke is going for Snoke and Rey is going for Kylo." Their source did not know if this means they will have a showdown in The Last Jedi or if it's something to be saved for Star Wars 9. The safe money would be on any Luke vs. Snoke confrontation being a set piece for the trilogy finale, especially since Skywalker is thought to take out the Knights of Ren in Last Jedi. It might work better to build up to the battle between the two Force masters as opposed to making it the crux of Episode VIII. Theoretically, Last Jedi could end with a cliffhanger similar to its predecessor since the sequel is coming in May 2019. There's still at least one more chapter before the saga's all said and done.

Regardless of what happens in Star Wars 8, it's safe to say Rian Johnson is aiming to subvert expectations. An early cut of the blockbuster was called "different" by those who saw it, and even promotional materials are teasing the most shocking reveal in franchise history. After The Force Awakens played it a little safe to ease viewers into "new Star Wars," Johnson seemingly has free reign to take the story in a multitude of directions and he's found some interesting angles to explore. Hopefully, The Last Jedi continues the brand's recent hot streak and gets fans even more excited for what comes next.
