This post contains MINOR SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Star Wars franchise has a history of plucking unknowns out of obscurity and transforming them into global superstars overnight, but the property is so huge, just about everyone wants to travel to the galaxy far, far away. The various live-action films have seen a number of characters be played by established names (including some Oscar nominees and winners), lending a sense of gravitas to the proceedings. This is evident by the casting of top tier talents like Benicio del Toro, Felicity Jones, and Woody Harrelson in Disney’s new films.
Though there will be plenty of Star Wars roles to go around for the foreseeable future, the nature of Hollywood schedules makes it impossible for everyone interested to take on a major part. This is particularly true for more famous faces, who are always in demand for projects. It’s for this reason the cameo is so appealing for household names; Daniel Craig played victim to Rey’s Jedi mind trick in The Force Awakens, and Tom Hardy has constantly been rumored for The Last Jedi. Now, one celebrity cameo for Episode VIII has been revealed: The Leftovers star Justin Theroux.
According to Making Star Wars, Theroux will play “an expert slicer” who has at least one “pivotal moment” in the movie. Since this is the first we’ve heard of his involvement with Star Wars 8, it’s likely this character doesn’t have a lot of screen time, but still makes a meaningful contribution to the overall plot. It’s currently unknown which side of the conflict he’s with, but from the sound of things, Theroux appears during sequences set on the mysterious casino planet that Dubrovnik was used for. It’s been confirmed that Finn is sent on an important mission for the Resistance, so perhaps he crosses paths with Theroux to encrypt some critical information about the First Order.
While details about Theroux’s character remain under wraps for the time being, his costume is not secretive. The slicer’s attire is described as a Star Wars spin on Indiana Jones’ spiffy tuxedo he wore during the cold open of The Temple of Doom. Apparently, Theroux “has a James Bond look” about him in The Last Jedi, as he wears a white coat over a black suit. Considering he’s supposedly on a casino planet, this isn’t the most surprising development, since high-rollers typically dress nicely when they go out for a night of gambling. Slicers have been featured throughout Star Wars canon in various novels such as the Aftermath trilogy and Catalyst, but this would be the first time this “profession” is depicted in the films. It will be interesting to see how Theroux factors in to the story.
Of course, fans will most likely have to wait until December to see Theroux’s character in action. The marketing campaign for Episode VIII has some larger priorities to take care of, like establishing the grizzled Luke Skywalker, continuing Rey’s development, and hinting at the broader scope of the latest galactic war. It’s possible Theroux could be glimpsed at briefly in one of the many trailers and TV spots that will be released over the next eight months, but his full role is probably going to be saved for the actual movie, much like Craig’s stormtrooper was. It’s just one more thing for viewers to keep an eye out for.
