Finn's journey will become all the more challenging when the character returns in this year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Today's panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando not only provided us with The Last Jedi's first trailer, but also several behind-the-scenes photos from The Last Jedi, details about a new planet in Episode 8, and more information regarding the characters in the film. While many of the original Star Wars trilogy characters are coming back, The Last Jedi focuses foremost on the main heroes and villains of 2015's The Force Awakens.

Naturally, much of that focus will be on Rey and her training with Luke Skywalker. Having just realized her Force abilities, she'll spend a lot of the movie learning about her powers and heritage - though the non-Jedi characters will be getting plenty of focus as well. Last we saw Finn, he was healing up from his confrontation with Kylo Ren. While The Last Jedi trailer shows that he's still recovering, we've heard from John Boyega that Finn and Poe will continue their friendship and adventures in the movie. Hopefully, that bond is strong, as Finn may begin questioning where his loyalties lie.

Speaking with Fandango, Boyega talked about Finn's role in The Last Jedi and whether his part will see him back in action:

“Yeah very physical, very physical. He’s on a new mission, there’s a new goal now. The Resistance is under immense pressure. The First Order is back and badder than ever, and it requires Finn to make a choice as to what side he’s on.”

We heard today that the First Order will be taking advantage of the chaos from the destruction of the Republic, but Boyega's mention of choosing sides is intriguing. While it's doubtful he'll consider turning back to the First Order, he could be referring to a split among the Resistance leaders. We heard recently that Poe and Laura Dern's character will butt heads about the path of the Resistance. It's possible that we could see Finn caught up in their struggle. As for the action, he couldn't tease much, but said fans will enjoy it:

“Finn has some combat in this one, and it’s going to be really interesting and people are going to love it."

Considering Finn got to fight with a lightsaber in the first movie, it'll be fun to see what's interesting compared to that. And speaking of abilities, Boyega was asked about his favorite moment from the trailer and chose the one that's already being used as a GIF around the Internet:

“Rey’s hands on the floor, with the stones vibrating up. It shows that her powers have grown.”

While Rey's Force powers are definitely enjoyable, it's Finn's status as an everyman that provides a solid grounding for the film and an emotional through-line. Luckily, he won't be carrying that weight alone in The Last Jedi. Kelly Marie Tran will be playing new character Rose, described as an everywoman and low-level member of the Resistance. While Finn and Poe together is great, it's likely the ace pilot will have missions to run while Finn will get stuck with other rookies. As such, it'll be nice to see the lower echelons of the Resistance and what they get up to in The Last Jedi.
