Kofi,
Nice piece. I noticed some snarky lines and thought, “this isn’t Vic’s writing style.” (Sorry, I often start reading without looking at the byline.)

I’m a bit worried, I wonder if the midnight showings are in danger of selling out. My understanding is that if an auditorium sells out, they’ll open another…but…I’ll have to make a call!

Haggislaw says:

Just came out of my Screening and damn i had a blast.
The cast was brilliant, the CGI mind blowing and the humor just perfect.

Love to everyone who helps making this movie a boxoffice success!

bigDOG says:

I’ve never been much of a Star Trek fan, but I just have to see this, J.J. has yet to let me down.

Cat says:

Should outsell wolvie after 2nd week

Jimmy says:

eh he let me down with the 5th season of alias (at least i thought it was the worst and most rushed…) plus cloverfield… so i’m going in with a healthy amount of skepticism

Gary says:

I just want to remind everyone that Batman Begins opened to 47 million .
many fans considered that a failure.
They expected WB to bail on the franchise.
That didnt happen.
I am NOT saying thats going to happen.
I am saying that no matter how much it makes this weekend Star Trek is BACK!.
After all, Star Trek Nemesis made only 16 million in its opening weekend .
With that type of disaster last time , Pasramount will take whatever they can get .

greenknight333 says:

@ Gary

They probably would have bailed on the Batman franchise if Superman Returns had made SPiderman like money….

Star Trek is back fer sure…I mean the buzz and hype is there and it’s just a matter of will it make 100 million in it’s opening weekend or not? I don’t think it will but I am wrong so often that I wouldn’t be shocked if it did..

790 says:

My Star Trek prediction stands at 109 mil. ;-)

Wolverine is on the grill,,,

Jimmy says:

holy… skepticism definitely not needed… the film’s FANTASTIC!!!

Gunther says:

Personally, I don’t think that Star Trek will open as low as Batman Begins. But I also don’t really believe it will break the 100 million barrier, although it would be great to see and the ticket sales indicate that much.

Nevertheless, the percentage of women who want to see this movie is mesmerizing to say the least. A younger cast really seems to help.

T says:

It is a really good Movie. Saw it last Saturday in a “sneak preview” showing from one of the local radio stations. Incredible. Does not disappoint.

JustDavid says:

I’ve got my tickets for IMAX. It’ll be a 90 minute trip into the city, but I figure this is one for the ‘IMAX experience’

Star Trek movies as a place to pick up chicks! Who knew?

$100 million in the first weekend? That would be great and guarantee J.J. and crew would return for more. I don’t see it breaking that record, but I hope it doesn’t do what Watchmen did and drop into the abyss on the second weekend.

Can’t Wait! Can’t Wait! Can’t Wait! CAN’T WAIT! (For tomorrow!)

John "Kahless" Taylor says:

Can’t get tickets online for the theaters I go to. MAGGOTS!! I’ll have to stop by there today and pick them up for tomorrow (hopefully). I looked into IMAX and the nearest theater is in Columbia, MD; I might try that theater one day, but it will be a weekend as traffic in the DC area is murder.

Andy S says:

MY GF and I are DEFINTELY going to see this movie this weekend. In IMAX, no less. She’s almost as excited to see this as I am..

John, don’t feel bad. I can’t buy advance tix online either. Grrr…

Tim "Cloverfield" says:

YES! I am in the 78% and have tix for TONIGHT!

fishwoman says:

As a woman let me put on my teacher’s hat and explain the appeal of the new Star Trek to those of my gender – 4 words, baby:

Geek boys don’t get to have all the fun.

Gary says:

Ishidoro,
Since WHEN?

Gary says:

the estimates I am seeing right now are 65- 74 million.
We shall see .
Just curious ,
which Star trek film had the best opening?

@Gary

Here:

http://screenrant.com/star-trek-breaking-records-vic-6049/

I noted that inflation-adjusted Star Trek First Contact had an inflation adjusted opening of $49MM and I believe that was the biggest Trek opening box office weekend. In that same post (two months ago) I predicted a $70-80MM opening weekend for the new film.

I think it will do at least that, but we’ll see.

Vic

Gary says:

Thanks Vic .
that sounds about right.
Watch the naysayers says its a flop if it doesnt make a 100 million by Monday.

RT says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this… but, I think Star Trek is THE best reboot EVER!!!! Yup, I said it… I actually like it better than I like Batman Begins. This movie was unbelievable!!! I’m also going to say it’s probably going to turn out to be the best movie of the year!

FYI, I’ve set up a Star Trek discussion post where people can talk about the film and not worry about spoiling it for others who haven’t seen it:

Manowar says:

All I can say is, DC better move fast and lock down Chris Pine for their Green Lantern Movie based on all the hype from Star Trek….

Cookie Garris says:

Knight,if you read this is there any way we can get you and the troops over there some of these new releases coming out? There has to be a way and I know i’m not the only one who believes getting the troops some good entertainment is the least we can do.

Cookie Garris says:

Hey screen rant. If you have any ideas on how we can help Knight and the rest of the troops out let us know.

Ken J says:

I’m not sure about what LEGAL ways there are, but they can always watch the bootlegs. Maybe we should write the movie studios and say they should provide free copies to troops overseas along with projectors and screens and whatever they might need… I know people who bring their own projectors when they get shipped, but it should be something provided for everyone to use.

Alex says:

My wife and I (both of us at the begging of 30) where lucky enough to catch a special prescreening on Tuesday and I was not surprised at how much my wife loved it. I kept thinking you don’t have to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy this movie because it’s such a fun ride. My brother and sister in-law saw it Thursday night and also loved the heck out of it. This movie is going to make a load of money.
