What Did You Think Of Star Trek? (Spoiler Discussion)
May 8, 2009 by Vic HoltremanNeed a place to talk about the Star Trek movie, including spoilers? Come on in…

Regular Screen Rant reader “790″ suggested I set up a discussion post for the Star Trek movie, where people can feel free to talk about all aspects of the film without having to worry about spoiling it for others. I had meant to set one of these up for Wolverine but just never got around to it.
Considering how popular I think Star Trek will be (moreso than Wolvie), I thought it might be a good idea to get this set up ASAP.
So discuss the film below to your heart’s content!
Around the web:

@ Ken J
That’s fair enough, I can understand that.
@ Katherine & Vee:
I’m not offended, but Ken J is right, it is nice to see naturalized citizens make more of their lives here than a lot of native-borns like – well, like me.
For what it is worth, we ARE like a big, slap-happy Baby Huey kind of overpowering culture, down here off your southern border, I realize that. Don’t know what to say except, “Pile on, guys!” Our philosophy is that, Everybody Wins, there’s enough for all, and if it isn’t, it DAMN well ought to be!
In the words of my favorite American actor playing my favorite American of all time (Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine, ‘Casablanca’) –
“Here’s lookin’ at YOU, kid!”
JOHN
PS, Vee: Speaking of cop shows, you might wanna check out a syndicated series called ‘Da Vinci’s Inquest’, kinda like a Canadian version of ‘Quincy, ME’ – only better. It has an all-Canadian cast and ususally guests, too, like Donnelly Rhodes and Kandyce McClure, it’s excellent – and filmed (and set) entirely in Toronto.
Later…
@Giovanni-o
“The Real McCoy?” I think not. I believe you’re referring to “The Man Trap.” In this instance I’m a doctor an an historian!
Regarding my paycheck, I’m a doctor, not an engineer!
Ciao (at least while I read the other thirty posts that have come in)

@John
Well, if both countries had cultures as inclusive, forward thinking, and, frankly, socialist as ST shows Earth cultures as being in the 23rd and 24th centuries when the merger happened, then fine. But if that were to happen tomorrow, I’d be taking up arms, man. No way in Hell. There’s a two part mini-series that came out last year called “The Trojan Horse” that pretty clearly demonstrates Canadian feeling on that issue.
Also, where did you get that from? I ask because I know they referred to Riker multiple times as being American in TNG.
And finally (oh, please don’t take this as an attack!) I just thought of all of the United States of [Insert region here] countries in the ST future as being American hubris, since they were American shows. There may be some, but I doubt that that many countries/regions will change their name to the United States of ______.
@ Steve
I’ll admit half the time he’s singing he kind of half speaks it… but oddly enough, even though I’m a music enthusiast, it still doesn’t put me off. And I don’t even notice the lens flares. (I do agree with your comment about the swordfight, it’s pretty lame. Nice pun by the way, lol)
I guess I can regain that respect for you
@Jamie
Spock said “retrieve the black hole device” and did not specifically address it as Red Matter until he was aboard the “Jellyfish Ship” and the computer alterted him the Red Matter would be “ignited” if the ship was hit by a torpedo.
@Vee
You can disown Shatner if you want, but please dont’ disown his Captain Kirk. James Doohan was also Canadian-born.
@ Well, whatever the case, all I can say is:
Good Daye, little mate!
Hahahaha, I know you’re no Rachel Hunter OR Crocodile Dundee, that’s alright!
I admire the Austrailians so much because, quite franky, I cannot think of a single thing bad to say about any of you…
And how many cutures can you say that about???
JOHN
@Steve
I believe you’re right, that sounds familiar, but I do have to watch it again, so many little details that didn’t completely soak in…
@Johhny-O
Correction: the original Sulu was not gay, however, the actor who portrayed him most certainly is. Ironically, it never even entered my realm on consciousness until I read about it sometime during the 90′s (before you were born, Katherine!)
@ Katherine
I never would have placed you that young. You should enroll in Starfleet immediately, and have your own ship by twenty!
@Vee
Well, you people from Northern Montana shouldn’t be surprised we take Star Trek seriously in the States. We invented it, after all!
Well, I wouldn’t want to live in Australia for a few reasons:
1. All top 10 most venomous spiders are found in Australia.
2. All top 10 most venomous snakes are found in Australia.
3. Rights to bear arms is restricted.
@Ken J
Spot on about actors – they get paid to act. I’m honestly tired about hearing of their miscreancy offscreen. Christian Bale demonstated that admirably for Batman, I believe. But… maybe he can channel that energy into this time-line’s Khan!
Speaking of which, while almost everyone here will remember the “Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!” thing from Star Trek II, does anyone else see similarities to that and Nero’s “Spoooooooooock” (x2) when Spock steals the “Vulcan Ship” and escapes the Narada?
@ John
Aww I feel loved. I’m glad you like Australians
I don’t know many Americans but you people and the few I’m met at school, etc are top notch!
@ Steve
Yeah not many people do place me this young. Rofl, I totally should! Oh wait, but then I’d have to move… damn.
@Ken J
I don’t think too many people think being from America is a bad thing, just the previous administration’s approach to dominion. Newsweek had a fascinating (pardon the pun) comparison to who would play whom in a Star Trek vs. Star Wars comparison. Cheney was Emperor Palpatine! Obama was Spock. I’m sure it’s still on their site for the curious. I bought the paper copy because I liked the cover.
On the subject of paper – for anyone lucky enough not to have purchased Alan Dean Foster’s novelization of the movie: don’t. While I have found all previous novelizations to be superior to the movie (especially for story backfill) this was absolutely awful. Hell, even Star Trek V isn’t nearly as bad in the book. (You can imagine good special effects if you close your eyes)
Oh yah Steve, and I’m sure the current administration’s road to socialism is such an improvement. You know that for every dollar we’ll be spending almost $0.50 will be borrowed? Right, let’s triple the deficit so we can give money to lazy people who don’t want to work for their own money… Screw that, my family didn’t escape communist China to live in communist USA…
@Vee
Something about “American” that’s always bothered me… I refer to myself as a “citizen of the United States” whenever asked, because I’m not sure why our nation has a monopoly on “American.” I mean, Canadians are Americans, as are Mexicans, and (gasp!) Venezuelans, and anyone who is on the North- or South-American continents. I’m sure that they decided it was better than calling ourselves “Unitedians” or “Statians” but the term “American” has made me rather uncomfortable. I’m patriotic, but I don’t think the USA can claim that phrase as solely its own.
Hmmm, let me rephrase that, I really should proofread more -
@ KATHERINE (there, dammit!):
Well, whatever the case, all I can say is:
Good Daye, little mate!
Hahahaha, I know you’re no Rachel Hunter OR Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan), that’s alright!
I admire you Austrailians so much because, quite franky, I cannot think of a single thing bad to say about any of you…
And how many cultures can you say that about??? Just look at us…
JOHN
@ Ken J
Hahaha, go my country. But you know I don’t think I’ve ever really encountered any scary snakes or spiders… or maybe I have and I’m just didn’t realise. Although come to think of it, at least two of those spiders (red backs and huntsmen) don’t live (or at least not in large numbers) in my part of Australia. But yeah that reminds me of a Dylan Moran quote about Australia:
“Why would you want to go to a country located exactly three quarters of a mile from the surface of the sun? And while folk are not walking around audibly crackling from the heat, they’re throwing themselves into the sea, which is inhabited exclusivley by creatures designed to kill you!”
Crap, stupid spam filter.
I think I know what word sets it off.
I’ll try to remember what I wrote so Vic won’t have to dig my post up.
I was saying to Steve, like our current administration’s road to $ociali$m is such an improvement. Did you know that for ever dollar we will be spending now, almost $0.50 will be borrowed? Right, let’s triple our deficit so that we can give our money to lazy people who don’t want to work for their own money.
No thanks, my family didn’t escape c0mmun1st China to live in c0mmun1st USA…
Hope that escapes the filter…
@ John
Lol, I pretty much gathered that it was directed at me
@Katherine
Michael Crawford owned that role, and ALW was an idiot for not demanding he be cast as the Phantom. I mean, this whole notion that “we need a young cast.” Hello? He’s supposed to be the age of Christine’s *father*!
And for all you off-topic police, I’m sure that Sarek appreciated historical classical music from the 1980s as much as his symphonies. The man had taste – he married a human after all!

@John
Hmm…previous post responding to the idea of Ennay seems to have been lost. Suffice it to say that until the States becomes at least as socialist as Canada (feel free to become more so), I’d object strongly. Storming Parliament strongly. And, sorry, John, but I don’t just see us all as being North Americans any more than I see us all as being colonies of Britain.
Was Ennay mentioned in TOS somewhere? I know that Riker was described as being American several times in TNG, so I’m a little confused.
@Steve
Since James T Kirk was American, I’ve got nothing to disown, there. And I’ve got zero problems with James Doohan. So far as I know, he was a nice guy fairly typical of his era.
@Phantom of the Opera movie
That’s the guy who played the phantom, right? Wasn’t he hired specifically because he had no vocal training? Considerring that, he didn’t do too badly. I’ve heard worse on the radio.
@Family
G’night folks, I’ll catch up with you tomorrow or Monday. It may be a long weekend here, but I’m still trying to keep to a healthy sleep schedule.
My family immigrated to the USA from China so we can take advantage of the OPPORTUNITY here to BETTER OURSELVES, not for handouts. Anyone asking for handouts should be ashamed of themselves. I work 60 hour weeks for my money, I’ll be damned if my government will tell me that I don’t deserve that money and some of it should go to people who sit on their butts all day in section 8 housing. Screw them, if they want to afford their medicine and eat real food, do what I have to do to accomplish that, get an education and get a job. That’s my rant.
@ Ken J
Having just returned from a sold-out showing, I hope my memory is still fresh, as I went in hoping to memorize the whole dang movie.
There was a mother with five younger children (around ten) in front of me, and I have to say it was so thrilling to watch them stare in awe at the giant screen at an hour well past their bedtime. Kudos to her for educating her children while they’re so young!
@ Steve
Rofl at the Sarek thing.
And I totally agree with you. Gerard Butler is more likely to be an older cousin or something.
Hopefully she was rewarding them for earning A’s on their report card, lol. I need to see it again to try to memorize more of it…
@Ken J
For what it’s worth, they restrict the right to bear arms in Star Trek. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have a whole ship’s alarms go off when someone vaporizes a pan holding mashed potatoes!
As a physician who has treated gunshot wounds, I can say that while I understand the need for self defense, I’ve yet to treat a wound inflicted in self defense. They sure get you with “I shall practice my art and teach it to others bound by this oath without fee or stipulation.” It’s hard to treat husbands who beat their wives, hell, sometimes I wonder why I went into medicine.
Then I watch Star Trek, and it all makes sense again. I’ll say it one more time; Karl Urban channels DeForest Kelley.
I’m a doctor, not an arms dealer. Amen to that.

@ Johnny-O
“I admire you Austrailians so much because, quite franky, I cannot think of a single thing bad to say about any of you…”
My reply: “Rupert Murdoch.”
Your riposte is anticipated with vigor.
