Need a place to talk about the Star Trek movie, including spoilers? Come on in…

star-trek-trailer-32

Regular Screen Rant reader “790″ suggested I set up a discussion post for the Star Trek movie, where people can feel free to talk about all aspects of the film without having to worry about spoiling it for others. I had meant to set one of these up for Wolverine but just never got around to it.

Considering how popular I think Star Trek will be (moreso than Wolvie), I thought it might be a good idea to get this set up ASAP. :-)

So discuss the film below to your heart’s content!

  1. @ John
    I’ll be a mere 16 years old (:

My thoughts on the Enterprise D is that it looks really odd and heavy, but the interior does look nice, so if I ignore the exterior it’s fine ;D

Ahh, I love the Rules of Acquisition! I’m not sure exactly how many there are, but I think it’s around the number.
Rule of Acquisition #13: Anything worth doing is worth doing for money.

  5. I just have one question. How did the young Spock know that Nero had stolen the red matter? Kirk found out that Nero had waited 25 yrs and then captured (the old) Spock and his ship which carried the red matter. The old Spock told Kirk not to tell (young) Spock that his future self had traveled back in time. So why then did (young) Spock proclaim he was going to take back the red matter? He shouldnt have even known that the red matter existed.

If I am missing something please let me know. I loved the movie..and am looking forward to the next.

  6. I don’t specifically remember, want to see it again just to pay more attention to the details brought up here, but I assume Kirk told Spock about the red matter, just not HOW it got there. I’m pretty sure Spock wanted to know what was put into the planet’s core to create the black hole.

  7. Crazyness. My birthday was on the 11th. The labour day long weekend sure inspires a lot of action, huh?

  8. @ Katherine:

Okay, I tried posting all of these, but apparently Vic thought it was just too damn long and, well, that’s his right as moderator. Probably a cood call…

Anyway, here’s the link, the Complete (it should be called ‘compleat’) Fernengi Rules of Acquistion:

    http://projectsanctuary.com/main/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=40

And Boy! Was I ever off, by about 199 rules! Can you believe that? I think they grew in the interim, which is a period of about the span of your whole life, hahaha! God, I feel old, but it sure as hell beats the alternative, I’ll tell ya that!

And as I just said in my long post, Ken J was sure right about you, I would’ve guessed you a lot older, esp in your grasp of music – that could be, though, because I never got so into it as much as others – but still, NEVER woulda guessed Sweet Sixteen!

    Enjoy, JOHN

  9. Now that I have my answer (didnt expect it so soon) . How do I turn off the notice of new postings..my blackberry is dinging away! lol

    ANOTHER Taurus! I KNEW it!

Well, Happy B-day to you, too, young lady!

And may you have many, many more…

Say, did you say U live up there in Edmonton? You don’t live all that far from my friend (from on here) Terry (‘Purist’), he lives in Alberta, too.

Another Canadian, hahahaha! Just like Shatner!

Well, sorry if that was a lead balloon, babe, but what the hell, it’s true!

Happy belated, anyway, hope yo had a good one.

    JOHN

  12. God, please, not like Shatner. Say like Jim Carey or like Nickleback, but please not like Shatner. I’ve disowned him like I disowned Gretzky.

  13. As you can tell, I don’t like being Shat on. :)

  14. And, yeah, I saw this movie for the first time on my birthday. Didn’t enjoy it so much then, but since it lead me here and since I’ve enjoyed it much more after re-watching it, I’m gonna say it was a pretty good birthday.

Yeah, just like sittin’ under a popular tree, ain’t it?

Boy, that old Trek Hive Mind mojo must be workin’ tonight!

Well, I still like old Bill, in fact I even like him more than I did when he was Kirk, he grew a sense of humor – and he won that Emmy for playing “Denny Crane!” on ‘Boston Legal’, remember.

Your choice, but if you ask me, there are a LOT of you Great White North hosers I can think of, plus a LOT I’m sure I’m not even aware of – John Davidson, Michael J Fox, and many, many more – that Mr I’d-like-to-thank-the-Academy over-actor can be remembered fondly for at one time taking himself WAY too seriously!

George Takei (okay, guys, for those of you who didn’t know, brace yourselves, the original Sulu was VERY gay, but he couldn’t stand Shatner either) likes to tell the story of when they were filming ST-II, a fire broke out on the Paramount lot, and ol’ Shat walked up to the firemen after the fire had been brought under control, asked the guys if they would let him fan the hose a little bit.

Next day, the dailies had a pic of Old Bill, replete in his red Starfleet uniform, “putting out the fire…” LOL!

Boy, would I pay good, foldin’ money for that picture!!!

Talk about a real HOSER! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

    JOHN

  17. @ John
Well, well. I shall have to have a big read of those rules, can’t be bothered to do so now (I have homework to do :P ). As for my knowledge of music; music is like my ultimate passion in life, so I pretty much try and know as much as possible about it. I shall indeed enjoy my Sweet Sixteenth :)

And rofl at Shatner and the fire hose. I like him when he’s acting, but everything I’ve seen of him in interviews etc just makes me dislike him… but oh well, you get that.

ps; Wow is everybody here from some part of America :S
    I feel like a foreigner (I’m Australian)
    >.>
    <.<

  18. I actually haven’t seen Shatner in anything but ST. I didn’t get into crime dramas at all until this past year. Besides, most of his stuff was before my time.

Oh! I just remembered that I did see him play himself in the movie Showtime. That was the first time I’d heard that he’d done anything other than ST.

As to him getting better over the years, maybe he has. I saw some of the movies before I saw TOS and, while I never liked him, I didn’t find him to be really objectionable in them. That could have just been the writing, though.

  19. @Katherine

Apparently both Purist and I are from Alberta, Canada, so we’re not quite ALL Americans. Admittedly, the non-American party does seem to be a lot smaller than the American party.

  20. @ Vee
Indeed it is smaller. But oh well, this is a good group of people and it doesn’t really matter where you’re from! Someone said earlier that this is like a family and I totally agree ^_^

  21. Most celebrities are like that, you watch them for their on camera personas, not for their off-camera personalities, because if you pay too much attention to how celebrities are in real life, you’ll be like me, and a lot of movies will be ruined because you just can’t watch them anymore.

  22. Damn, you guys are talking like being from America is a bad thing. Although that’s the “popular” bandwagon opinion right now… My family immigrated here to the USA from China and I’m so glad that they did. I think that’s why I appreciate it here more than a lot of people who were born here…

  23. @ Ken J
True true, it’s also like when you’ve only seen an actor in one movie/TV series and then you see them in a completely different role and it’s weird. For example, (this isn’t a major star but oh well) I had only ever seen David Wenham as the good-guy friar in ‘Van Helsing’ and then I saw him in ‘Australia’ where he plays this evil baddie who kills everybody and I had trouble accepting it.

  24. @ Ken J again
I’m sorry I didn’t mean for it to sound like a bad thing, I simply meant that I kind of felt like a minority in the discussion, especially when people were talking about being on the east coast or central or whatever, I was thinking ‘yeah I have no idea where that is…’ not that I was in that part of the conversation, but eh..
Anyway, the point is, I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with being American/living in America :)

  25. @Ken J

It’s not that being from America is a bad thing, but that our seperate cultural identities tend to get overshadowed by American culture. I know as a Canadian I tend to feel overwhelmed at times by the flood of American culture. A lot of times Canadians get confused between Canadian law and American law because of all of the American crime dramas we watch. For example (this is not influenced by crime dramas), when someone not from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s riding says “I voted for Harper”. Nobody outside of Harper’s riding actually voted for him. They may have voted for a representative of his party, but they didn’t vote for him. But, because American’s (theoretically) vote for the leader of their country seperately, people here often feel that we do to.

Rambling a bit, but for me it’s reassuring to know that there are other non-Americans out there. It makes the cultural take-over of the world by American culture (through TV, mostly) seem less inevitable. Just because being American isn’t a bad thing, doesn’t necessarily mean we wat to be Americans. I hope that wasn’t too confusing.

  26. @ katherine (& Vee):

Yeah, about family…that was me. Glad you agree.

Btw, I just read over the 286(!) Rules of Acquisition, found a favorite already:

“232. Life’s no fair (How else would you turn a profit?)”

Hahahaha, I like that one, and SOOOO thrue, doncha think???

There’s also one in there up the line about how “Only Bugsy could build Las Vegas”; kinda reminds me of the old Vulcan saying from ST-VI: “Only Nixon could go to China”

Kinda nice to know, one day our culture will live on among the stars, for good or ill.

Also…Hmmm, an Aussie, are ye? Well, hello, mate! Welcome to the boards, fair lass!

And I AM American as Mom, apple pie, baseball & Chevrolet – well, three outta four ain’t bad, lol! Looking grim for GM…

If it makes you Canadians feel any better, by the Star Trek era, they lump both our countries together (way I think of it, anyway, already) as ‘Ennay’ – N. A., North America, get it?

Apparently, by the 23rd Century, there are a LOT of ‘United States’ all over the Earth, for example Uhura was born in the US of Africa (Bantu Nation); there is a United States of South America, one in Russia (today the Russian Federation), and of course, the Common Market nations of Europe.

So, as far as I am concerned, hell, we are all ‘Ennayers’, don’t you think?

And who doesn’t love Aussies? Hell, my heart has a warm spot for ‘em just because they started as out over a hundred & fifty years ago as Botany Bay, another ST reference…OMG! The ‘SS Botany Bay’ was Khan’s stolen DY-100 class spaceship!

    Talk about connections…

    JOHN

  27. @katherine

Mainly it was just this one thing you said when you and vee were talking about where you guys are from:

“But oh well, this is a good group of people and it doesn’t really matter where you’re from!”

It sounded like that little joking comment you use on people “You’re an ok guy, no matter what they say about you!” lol

I know that’s not what you meant though, but I just wanted to express my dislike for the whole anti-american trend. Not really directed toward you two, just a mini-vent that’s all.

  28. @Everyone – it’s going to take me a while to get through all of these, so apologies for multiple posts.

@ Katherine – I have seen Phantom of the Opera over fifteen times; I greatly enjoy the musical – it is Gerard Butler’s singing I cannot abide, if you dignify it with that designation. The effects in that movie (chopping out the horrible swordfight – pun entirely intended) would be a good place to start. So please, think no less of me because I am grossly disappointed with the movie… especially its lens flares (and Gerard Butler’s singing)

  29. @ John

Lol, I like that one (the rule of acquisition).
    One of my favourites is:
“48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.”
    That one is so true.
    And 235 makes me laugh:
“Don’t trust anyone who trusts you.”

    Yep, I’m a kangaroo-riding, crocodile-tackling Aussie.
Rofl, not really. But it’s sad how many Americans actually believe that. I’m not sure how ‘Australian’ I am, but I know I definitely am not a blonde, tanned surfer who loves hot weather and the beach ;|

    Lol at ‘Ennay’.
“The ‘SS Botany Bay’ was Khan’s stolen DY-100 class spaceship!”
Wait, so he stole the first white Australians and turned their houses/whatever they lived in (yeah I knows heaps about my country’s history) into a spaceship? Conspiracy much!
