Rob Keyes says:

lol Vic,

The second pic has been overly photoshopped like most ppl on magazine covers. It’s too bad in this case because it really hurts the overall image.

His skin look noticeably more realistic in the screenshot above.

I like what I see so far. It’s going to make a great review podcast and – yes – I DO agree on the metrosexual thing. The same thing with the overall “I look like a Mego Figure” to all of the characters is a bit strange, but the flavor is right on. Let’s hope it’s story and initial continuation (is that a phrase?) is going to be as right on as the imagery.

Gary says:

looking good.

Ken J says:

How come none of them look old enough to be in the positions that they are in?

PhotoShopLifter Dan says:

1. Kirk was, according to Star Trek canon, the youngest starship captain ever promoted to that position in Federation history.

2. Vulcans age slower than humans.

3. The bridge looks as though they got it second-hand from Admiral Ackbar after Return of the Jedi

4. Dang, but Karl Urban totally nails McCoy, doesn’t he?

5. Where’s Kirk’s Federation shirt? he’s dressed like an off duty ninja; maybe, even in the Federation, black has a slimming effect?

PhotoShopLifter Dan says:

You think they’ll boldly go where no set designer has gone before, and at least show the DOORWAY to a bathroom?

Every frickin’ show…no body-waste elimination facility, not even a doorway suggesting one; has Mankind evolved to such a degree that they don’t, uhmmm, “generate excretory biomatter”?

PhotoShopLifter Dan says:

Comment from the MTV story says, “When asked why Kirk was wearing black instead of the standard yellow captain’s shirt, Lindelof said that the black uniform was, in fact, a captain’s uniform — and the color was “significant” to the story surrounding this scene.”

So, the captain becomes the Federation answer to Johnny Cash, Will Smith, and Tommy Lee Jones*??

*All were Men In Black

Deadpool says:

hahahah…bathroom. Good one.

I agree that they look kinda metro in the cover pic. Honestly I expect that for a major magazine cover photo. Im not worried at all. I am super psyched about this movie. Even though I am not a big bond fan, I will go see Quantam of Solace just to see the trailer on the big screen.
The thing that excites me the most about these pics is seeing Bana as Nero. I think his character is gonna be wicked!

Nomaadic says:

Like that they kept the original 60’s retro look. Nice

James2 says:

Ehhhhh…..well, maybe on the NEXT star trek reboot, we’ll get to see a crew that actually look like normal, average grown ups, instead of teenage look-a-likes.

Pretty soon, the way movies and shows are down-aging everyone, it won’t be long before we see our first Pakistani, female, beauty-queen toddler ship commander.

Well, this IS supposed to be the crew not long after leaving Starfleet Academy.

After digesting the images above, I’m thinking my cautious optimism on this film may have been justified.

My two favorite images are Quinto as Spock choking that guy and the combined cast shot. Karl Urban looks like he’s channeling DeForest Kelly so well it’s eerie.

What I’m not too jazzed about is the look of the bridge. It’s too bright. From everything I’d heard about an updated, yet faithful reproduction, I was truly expecting that the color scheme of the new bridge would match that of the old.

It looks too “Star Wars”-ish to me. Take that set and put it in the reds, tans and blacks of the original and it would look a lot more like TOS.

Vic

790 says:

Yeah I thought the same thing Vic, the bridge is too bright.

Since when is Black a captains color.
I remember the Green macho shirt but never black…

Spock looks bewildered on the cover shot… What’s Kirk doing to him?

Rick says:

I grew up on the 60’s Star Trek. Had a hard time excepting TNG, Felt like I was being unfaithful but got into it after giving it a chance. This looks to be good and am more than willing to spend the money to go see it. I wish I could go back as a kid waiting for Star Trek to come on the TV. Maybe I will with this movie.

Gary says:

Is that Chris Pine In the neck pinch scene ?
same hair at least.

Gary says:

Also the person Spock is pinching is wearing A BLACK SHIRT.
The Captains supposed to wear black in this film right?

PhotoShopLifter Dan says:

Vic said, “It looks too “Star Wars”-ish to me. Take that set and put it in the reds, tans and blacks of the original and it would look a lot more like TOS.”

Compare Ackbar’s bridge in ROTJ…
http://shootagainamusements.com/itsatrap/akbar.jpg

to the new Enterprise bridge, seen above; any questions?

Oh, and as to Gary’s comment?
What, you never heard of a power struggle?

Van Banoovong says:

The pics from the new Star Trek movie are looking awesome and I loved how they updated the TOS uniforms, yet retain the classic look. They also capture the look and essence of the original series characters, which is what all we asked for. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the bridge, but I want to see what the Enterprise looks like in the new film.

Rob says:

are we sure that’s the bridge of the enterprise? Or something other ship or something in starfleet training?

As for age, these characters are based in or just out of starfleet academy, so that’s a non-issue. We don’t know the ranks of anyone yet so Kirk perhaps is not captain yet.

PhotoShopLifter Dan,

I recall one bathroom and only one – from TNG when Riker and Data were looking for a strand of hair for the older doctor in order to make her healthy with the use of the transporter – forgive my lack of details, but it had to do with something when she was taking a shuttlecraft somewhere because she was afraid of transporters. Ironic, that is was the transporter that saved her in the end.

790 says:

Yeah Rob that could be a bridge simulation,,, prob on a Holodeck.. ;-)

There’s a bathroom shown in the offical blueprints of the Next Generation Enterprise bridge plans. But there was no bathroom on the original bridge. Just that elevator.

CanuckLou says:

The shot is confirmed as being the bridge, no simulator.

Spock is choking Kirk in that picture.

Love the Pike era touches on the bridge ie the gooseneck lamps and the silver solid uniform rank braids on the sleeves.

Ken J says:

Is it wise to hand over a multi-trillion dollar star ship to an entire group of “just graduated” starfleet officers? Don’t they usually surround new graduates with veterans who can kind of show the “new kid” around? I mean, seriously, when have you seen a crew of a US Naval Aircraft carrier where EVERYONE on the bridge is fresh out of the academy? You might see a few, but most of them would be older…

790 says:

I agree Ken J,,,
Sheesh if you watch Star Trek Enterprise, the officers are older than Kirk and his motley crue…

Its an Abrams teen friendly film.

Ken J says:

Another thing, in the cast pic, the one right after the Nero pic, can you guys believe McG has that snot-nosed brat looking guy on the left play Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation??? Way to pansify one of the bad-a**es from pop culture… Thanks McG, he better not look like how I think he would look in the role…

arrell says:

Agree with Ken J above. Totally thought the same thing.

Regarding this film, I can’t say I’m a trekkie, but I’ll watch it for Eric Bana.

Jon says:

What’s with the dual barcode scanners at in the bridge pic. The station in the background. Those look like Metrologic barcode scanners. Is that the Starbucks register to pay for their espresso or decaf?

Mark says:

Is it me or does Simon Pegg, (scotty) look really angry on that crew shot! On that same image it looks to be the large view screen behind them which also seems to indicate “warp factor” at the top. 4.3 by the looks of it in the hi-res image ive seen.

Im not sure about the recpetion desk on the bridge however!

Mark says:

P.S. and whats going on with the Celvin in this photo? http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20233502,00.html

The ship looks great but cant make heads nor tails of that blue thing on top.

@Mark

That looks like an homage to the development of the original Enterprise. The next to final design idea for the NCC-1701 was essentially what we saw on the show, but flipped upside down.

That’s what that image appears to convey.

Vic

mike says:

i guess and hope that the black shirt kirk is wearing is perhaps just the “undershirt” part of the uniform. I’m guessing that the yellow tunic part was taken off perhaps during a fight or battle scene. (Think of the white turtle neck type “under” shirts the original crew wore in the star trek movies . Look at the shape of the neck line matching the others so i think i may be right…

mike says:

on a side note, i read that chris pine said his portrayal of kirk was going to be more han solo esque . funny since his father who played the sgt on “chips”, kind of looked like harrison ford ….

Dave says:

In the Blueprints for the original enterprise there are many, many bathrooms. The one on the Bridge is behind the main view screen.

Deadpool says:

I wouldnt consider myself a diehard trekkie. Ive only seen a couple of episodes of the original show, The wrath of kahn, and most of The Next Generation (including all the films from that timeline) Maybe thats why I dont understand this debate over bathrooms on the bridge. I think its kinda funny.

Does anyone know if the actors are signed on for multiple movies? Are they going to do a new franchise with this, or is it supposed to be a stand alone story? I hope they set up for the sequel. My head has always been in the stars and I love to see the exploration and adventures in the unknown. Star Trek is like my dreams on the screen.
Anyone have a favorite Trek character? (from any iterations of the show or movies)

790 says:

@Dave, right behind the main Viewscreen,,, wow that means a direct hit to the forward bridge could get very ugly if shields are down,,, ;-)

Deadpool, I’ve heard that all the main players are signed on for 2 more Star Trek sequels.
I think its clear to say that Abrams wants to go forward after this film with movies set in the Kirk timeline… (Prob pre-series)

My fav character has got to be “Q”…

Rob Keyes says:

@ Mark,

I’ve seen that design before in the games. As Vic says, the blue is the satellite panel and that’s the neck/body portion. The other side of the ship has one centered Warp nacelle I would think.

@Deadpool, I think they want to franchise this and JJ’s goal is to show paramount that Trek can be successful.

@Deadpool

Don’t recall if they’re signed on but the plan IS to make this a “new” franchise if the first film does well.

Vic

Deadpool says:

Thanks everyone. Thats good news. Im getting more and more psyched about this movie every time I see something new. Hopefully they open up a bit more and give the fans some more details/pics/clips. Just not to the extent that they did with Iron Man.

My favorite character had to be Will Ryker (obsessed fanboys, if I spelled that wrong Im sorry. Please dont accost me!)

David says:

This is my first post on Screen Rant, hi everyone. I’ve been a trekkie since I was 11. My favorite character has always been the original Lady herself (NCC-1701), fallowed closely by Uhura. If anyones interested, I found an artists rendering of what the new Enterprise may look like based on what can be seen in the first trailer for the film. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/judexavier/STXINCC-17013View.jpg
As a fan of Jeffries designs I spent hours searching for some glimpse of the new Enterprise with hi hopes and deep dread. This rendering I like and would be happy to see in the film but doubt it is what we’ll see on the big screen.

Hi David,

Welcome to the site. I’m a huge Star Trek fan going WAY back.

Vic

David says:

Hi Vic,

So am I, that would be about 33 years for me.

For the new movie to be good to me, JJ will have to hold true to the characters created by Rodenberry and brought to life by the original cast. I don’t mean copy their performances though.

The reason Uhura is my favorite is because Nichols played her as a strong and subtle woman that had a fire under control in her soul. We see that fire come to the surface in ‘Space Seed’ and ‘The Naked Time’.

If JJ can bring that kind of complexity to Rodenberry’s creations this will be the begining of a beautiful franchise.

Deadpool says:

Hey David. Welcome!
I would say that my feelings for The Next Generation are similar to yours for the original. I too am psyched for this movie, and I think Ive seen enough of the original show and movies to appreciate the past. One thing I would suggest to you as a fellow hardcore fan of several shows and comic characters, try not to compare the new movie to the original TOO much. You could end up being so disappointed that it didnt live up, and you might be missing out on a good movie. I had the same problem with the Xmen movies. I expected so much from the first two, and they fell far short of that on first viewing. I went back later to watch them with a friend who hadnt seen it, and I started to notice that even though it wasnt what I thought it should be, it was good (especially X2)
I have my doubts that JJ will keep to what has already been done. I also wonder sometimes if people of this generation would be ever be able to appreciate anything from that era. I myself am young (25) but old enough to be disappointed with the apparent lack of respect kids seem to have with the classics.
I guess my point is that I have high hopes that this movie will be enjoyable for fans of my generation, and fans of yours. Hope you enjoy the movie!

Andy says:

I can’t WAIT for this movie!!! As for complaining that the characters look too young, look at the characters in TOS. Not exactly a bunch of geezers there! Since this is supposed to be BEFORE TOS, it would make since they look younger.

The only thing I am NOT crazy about is the bridge. But it’s hard to make up my mind from just one still photo.

Urban seems to have been born to play Dr. McCoy!!

790 says:

@Deadpool,,, like your style btw…
8-)
^
Yeeah weell they do look too young Andy !!!!! (Aunt Bee voice) … ;-)

Hopefully the story (is so kick aas) it allows us to overlook that…
8-)

The Enterprise Bridge looks (lets get real, cause I’m keeping it real) like an extravagant piece of Ipod / Iphone crap,,,!!!
I only hope that, that’s the Enterprise bridge, that gets destroyed on Cap Pikes Ship…

(Where’s the trippy colors man?)

Btw its pretty obvious that were gonna see how Captain Pike gets Fd_up in this film,,,
Poor Nowhere Man…
Get ready to blink one for Yes, and 2 for No… :-(

PhotoShopLifter Dan says:

Jon said, “What’s with the dual barcode scanners at in the bridge pic…Those look like Metrologic barcode scanners. Is that the Starbucks register to pay for their espresso or decaf?”

Maybe Metrosexuals go Manic for Metrologic scanners with their MochaWhateverTheFudgeYouCallIt?

Mark said, “Im not sure about the reception desk on the bridge however!”

How else will Kirk keep track of which babe he “makes First Contact with” at different times?

790 said, “@Dave, right behind the main Viewscreen,,, wow that means a direct hit to the forward bridge could get very ugly if shields are down”

Not as ugly as if Kirk gets a bad case of the Hershey Squirts…”(*BRA-A-A-A-AP!*) Oh, GodOGodOGodOGodOGodOGodOGodOGodOGod! SPOCK! BONES! Who forgot to reload the toilet paper dispenser?”

John "Kahless" Taylor says:

790, I don’t know if we will see Pike get exposed to delta rays in this one because Spock had been with Kirk for a while before he committed mutiny trying to get Pike to the Talos planet.

I’m also a huge Trek fan but I see nothing wrong with the bridge. We all know that this is a re-imagining of the Trek universe, so we’ll see alot of SGI that is vastly superior to the 1966-69 show, or even the TOS movies. I feel the bright colors are refreshing and look a lot like the experimental ship the Doctor was transported to in Voyager.

My favorite character out of all the Trek universe has to be the legendary Spock. I love them all but Spock reigns supreme.

That picture with Quinto and Pine needs to be outlawed. Or better yet, just throw it into a warp core. :-)

Um, can we get off the bathroom humor thing? I mean, seriously…

Vic

790 says:

Kahless,,, I’m assuming the writers overlooked the timeline/canon and are going to include Pikes demise anyway.
8-) 8-) 8-)

Rob Keyes says:

I read that for the bridge – JJ was very strict about every piece of equipment, tech or screen on the bridge had a legitimate purpose of being there.

So although, what we see looks drastically different from the original show, that makes me feel kinda good about it.

790 says:

But Rob I’ve seen “fan-made” film productions of TOS Bridge that look better than this !!!
Wtf,,,, They stick to the uniforms but transport the cool look of the bridge out into space,,,
This attention to detail is way too Admiral Ackbar’s ship/Starbucks looking,,,

(I’m not impressed)

Arrrhhhhhhh. :-)

Ken J says:

I still like how the female has to be wearing a short skirt and high boots. I guess sexism is alive and well in the future but currency is not, lol. :-D

the old man says:

I know this won’t change anybodies opinion about the bridge. I’m of the same opinion as the majority. Just as an observation..

The lighter colors would indicate a female influence. The reason I say this is because every woman in my family wants everything light in color. It also makes sense if you want to make the space look bigger, and from this picture the bridge looks small, compared to the original TOS bridge. It looks like the walls are anchored rather than movable. That limits camera angles and setups. I believe that’s Uhura standing at the communications console with the Metrologic scanners. I first saw this picture somewhere else, and the camera angle/photo was just a little further to the left, which made it look like the comm-station was out parallel with the Captains chair. The first thing I thought is, the first torpedo hit, and Uhura is going to become a trip hazard. However I see it’s not quite parallel but inset. I think that’s the turbo lift door to the right of her behind the slab of transparent aluminum (sic). Colors hearken back to STMPs’ bridge only lit brighter. Free standing console, transparent barriers, and color palette give it the “Star Wars” episode 6 look.
