‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ International Trailer Gets Personal [Updated With Images & Poster]

3 months ago by Rob Keyes

While recent buzz surrounding Star Trek Into Darkness has shifted slightly towards the future in light of news that director J.J. Abrams will shockingly, yet fittingly direct Star Wars Episode VII, the latest teaser trailer and full international trailer are re-focusing fans on Screen Rant’s most anticipated film of the year.

Let’s forget about Star Trek 3 possibly releasing in 2016, the 50th anniversary of the franchise, and who make takeover to direct while Abrams producers, and instead enjoy the most revealing look Into Darkness yet.

The first full Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, gloomy and awe-inspiring, teased the much desired return of the Enterprise crew and threw them into a series of intense, emotional albeit disconnected action-packed sequences. Much of the scenic destruction and chaos depicted seemed to be caused by a new, intimidating and powerful villain who we later learned was named John Harrison. Later, the Super Bowl trailer showcased a little more of the USS Enterprise, falling apart, while the mysterious Harrison claimed that he’s better at “everything” than Kirk.

With the international trailer, we now see clearly what John Harrison did and why Kirk leads the charge against him. Harrison is a Starfleet officer who betrays them for reasons we do not yet know. Unlike Nero from this film’s predecessor, Harrison is a villain Abrams says audiences can feel for and understand, so expect twists and turns and story much more than a simple tale of revenge.

The second one-minute teaser last week, presented young Captain Kirk getting disciplined by Admiral Pike, inter-spliced with a Star Wars-esque chase sequence. For long-time fans, seeing and hearing Kirk take command of his crew and the Enterprise was refreshing to see after all the marketing thus far has been unsurprisingly dominated by Cumberbatch’s voice and presence. Now we see them face-to-face, and their confrontations put into context.

UPDATE: Did you notice this sexy shot of Alice Eve in the trailer (we’re fairly sure you did):

Official Star Trek Into Darkness synopsis:

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The Star Trek sequel stars Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bruce Greenwood, Chris Pine, John Cho, Karl Urban, Peter Weller, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana and is directed by J.J. Abrams off a script by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens in theaters (regular and IMAX 3D) on May 17th, 2013. Select IMAX 3D theaters will open May 15th.

Considering he was beamed off the craft he was using to attack the Starfleet Officers, I would think he has help.

Redshirts who were in the sick bay with McCoy and Marcus was behind them, and letting both work on him.

He is referenced to as an Agent.

I am thinking that he is stronger due to perhaps being on a planet with a heavier gravity or using weapons that were made in a lesser gravity. Which would explain his ability to jump from a great height and still be able to knock Spock down.

The fact, he knew where Starfleet was meeting, and had a craft that got pass the defenses.

I do not know if it is the same, but when Uhura said they were outnumbered.

John might be a Capellan. This explains why he is so aggressive and bcuz of the timeline change, maybe the Klingons took over their world.

This trailer might of gave to much away. I have a feeling that everyone will think John Harrison is a villain at 1st but toward the end, they notices he’s a good guy and then help him out.

    My guess:

Klingons destroyed his world and Earth is now next. John Harrison comes to warn us but is mistaken as the enemy enforcing threats. Later they join him in fighting the Klingons.

I don’t believe for a second that Cumberbatch’s character is called ‘John Harrison’ and I’m actually more inclined to believe that he is indeed Gary Mitchell. In every interview I’ve read, Abrams and the producers have talked about keeping as much of the plot under wraps as possible until the film releases. It therefore doesn’t make sense that they would go and name Cumberbatch’s character like that and I believe they were simply trying to divert attention away from the fact that Karl Urban himself name-dropped ‘Gary Mitchell’ in an interview. So far their tactic has worked, as everyone seems to automatically refer to Cumberbatch as ‘John Harrison’ in writing (see Screen Rant’s own articles of late) and the ‘Gary Mitchell’ rumours have died down. I admit that Cumberbatch could be playing the character of ‘Gary Mitchell’ with a different name, but that wouldn’t really make sense what with all the other originally-named characters. The fact that this trailer states that Cumberbatch’s character is an ex-Starfleet agent (not to mention his god-like tone/words and apparent ‘super powers’) only adds more truth to the ‘Gary Mitchel’ theory.

If it were Gary Mitchell Kirk would already know who he is. Plus Gary Mitchell has already appeared in recent comics set before into darkness.

John Harrison may have just come in contact with the same cloud that Gary did.

I don’t think so though, this trailer left a lot of nuggets that Star Fleet leaders did something really bad, covered it up and Harrison is on a crusade to kill everyone responsible.

Of course in the end, it will be Kirk vs Weller vs Harrison

I only ask for one thing from this movie. Please, do not include a plot twist where we discover Mr Harrison wanted to be captured as it was part of his plan.

    Thanks.

I think you might be disappointed on that score, EVERYONE knows that when a baddie is caught it was all part of the plan.

Never take prisoners just but a phaser bolt between their eyes, saves a lot of hassle and makes movies shorter, if I was a Bond villian it wouldn’t get to the 2nd reel lol

        Hey Motoko and Alex

The irony of both your responses is that I had no idea he was gay in real life, my statement was purely based off his look and the way he carries himself, just has a very camp look and nature about him.

The fact that he IS ACTUALLY gay makes me feel a tad bit sexist now as we all know a joke between friends is funny, but humour can be viewed as slander when humour is based on truth.

Another part of me is thinking, ‘it all makes sense now’ LOL.

I will not deny he has been nothing but professional in his acting, but I just get the feminine vibe of him, even in the first one when he took charge. Hmmm.

Uh, sexist doesn’t exactly apply since you did not discriminate against him for his sex. Sex is whether he has male or female genitalia, not a person’s sexual preference. I think the correct word for you is bigot…

And slander is a spoken untruth about someone, such as if you are a news reporter and you report or you spread the word that someone is stealing money when you actually have no evidence of it and know it isn’t true… I think you meant that it can be viewed as offensive… Sorry to be such a grammar nazi, but you’re really just misusing a whole bunch of words in one comment… :-D

As for grammar, stop using 3 dots at the end of your sentences. If you have made your point, which you have, use a full stop. If you’re aggressively passionate use an exclamation mark. By all means, feel free to quote me in the future, at which time I’ll allow you to use three dots :) .

Seriously, I wasn’t trying to be offensive, eh hem, “slanderous.” I just figured since you seemed like you wanted to use those words, that maybe you actually would want to know what they meant, or what their correct usage should be. I mean, if you want to get all butt-hurt when someone points out the errors and just keep misusing them instead of simply learning from your mistakes, be my guest. Forget I said anything………. :-)
