Today we have two new clips from the upcoming and eagerly anticipated Star Trek. The videos give us a nice introduction to Dr. McCoy and hints at the relationship between Kirk and Spock.
First up, thanks to Film School Rejects, we have a scene featuring one of the big three original Star Trek characters, Leonard “Bones” McCoy. In J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, Dr. McCoy is played by none other than one of my favorite actors, Karl Urban.
The video emphasizes McCoy’s personality and character, and Urban truely portrays the character as he was in the original series without coming off as an imitation. This video shows that he nailed it - watch and see what you think:
I think he’s absolutely perfect for this role and I can’t think of anyone who looks and plays the part better.
Next, we have another funny scene – this one taking place where Spock first meets Scotty. Although, the funny part comes not from Simon Pegg’s Scotty, but from feeling the anger build up inside of Spock. Check it out and see for yourself:
These videos are awesome and Dr. McCoy is awesome. After hearing all the great reviews of the Star Trek from the premieres in Austin, Texas and Sydney Australia, Star Trek is back in my top three most anticipated of the year.
What do you think of the videos and will you be seeing this in theaters?
Star Trek opens May 8, 2009 and I’ll be there.

Karl has really captured the spirit of the character. “I may throw up on you.” I’m happy he’s finally got a decent role, still inside his usual genre of Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
WHOA I really like that Leonard McCoy. He really does capture the mannerisms of DeForest Kelly! Can’t say too much on Spock, Kirk or Scottie yet.. They didn’t really jump out at me as anything spectacular..yet.
Is every scene going to have those lens flares in it? That got annoying just in those clips alone…
Won’t watch it! Tired of spoilers! Why would I want to recite scenes in the theater! Sign of psychological damage! I’ll wait to see the whole movie intact at the theater and await my thrills the way a movie should be viewed!!
Shame on those who want to know too much too early in their lives! Surprise is the ultimate adventure!
ROFL, I’m refusing to watch ‘em as well.
BUT.
I do have a Capt. Kirk wallpaper…
Quinto might have the look but he doesn’t have the deep voice of Nimoy which I liked about Spock.
I guess I could ignore that but I kept thinking he sounded like Sylar the whole time.
Still I’m looking forward to this movie. Wonder how John Cho does Sulu.
‘Can I have a towel please?’ LOL
Looks great – the use of lens flare might be distracting though.
I’ve seen both of these clips, and the bar scene with Kirk and Uhura, at least a dozen times each. After the first few times, I tried to place the original cast members in place of the new ones and payed close attention to what they were saying and doing in the clips. And they all seemed quite genuine in their portrayals.
Pine does a pretty good job of acting like Kirk without immitating him as does Urban as McCoy, (he’s just going above and beyond and I like it!) Quinto did pretty well with Spock, but I agree with the comment about his voice; not as close as the others. And Pegg didn’t really say enough to judge his interpretation.
These clips just have me itching to see this thing. Only 29 more days!!!
@Zipper
Yeah, I’m a bit concerned about that lens flare thing – I’ve read that it’s used quite a bit.
@MBL
My wife said the same thing last night about not wanting to see any more clips. I don’t think I want to either.
Vic
That was total crap! Come on! The first clip looked like a UFC fight!
Actually, that’s all I could see of the first clip, the UFC ad. The glare in the second clip was a bit annoying and it was kind of choppy but that was probably because the network here sucks.
I’m also done with previews. I was sold at “Space, the final frontier…”.
Why isn’t the McCoy actor not in the movie posted in place of the back actress (assuming it’s the Ohura actress)?
Ohura was minor character compared to “Bones”.
“I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer Jim!”….great episode.
Looks amazing Vic!!! Looks like Bones may be the unsung hero again of the Troika
Bridge is way to bright!!! No biggie can be toned down in the next film. Imagine starring at a halogen light all day long – scorched retinas boys and girls
Ship’s secondary hull is way too ugly- no biggie can be refit in the next film
Quinto’s voice is way too- Sally sells seashells by the seashore cindy Brady – but he looks sooooooo damn Spock and I don’t mind the voice
Less than a month away!!!!!
@Manowar
I’m sorry man, but I was cringing with every little thing you got wrong. It’s Uhura, not Ohura. And the quote is, “Dammit Jim! I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer!”
LOL, thanks..
Dammit John! I’m a fan, not a trekkie!
I agree about the iBridge – way too bright. Looks like a science lab as opposed to a command center but I’ll wait for the film to see how it plays out.
Spock’s voice is off as well, but I chalk that up to him still being such a young character in this (as we can also see with his emotional issues).
Karl Urban does McCoy well, but the I miss that “southern gentleman” feel Kelly brought to the roll.
Quinto does a very young Spock much as I would expect to see him. But I don’t think he puts forth the control Spock was able to develop in the TOS’s 2nd and 3rd seasons. (Even the later part of the 1st season for that matter.) He reminds me of Spock in “The Cage” or “Where No Man Has Gone Before” only more believable. I’m not saying that’s bad, that’s just how it seems to me.
With under a month to go, its time to start avoiding the clips for me as well. Don’t want them fresh in my mind for the premiere.
I don’t know if anyone has notices but there is a “Trailer 3″ out on Apple’s Trailer site and it’s “almost” the same as the second one. Except there are some new, albeit quick, footage we haven’t seen yet. I won’t say much more.
You know… one thing that’s really starting to bug me the more I watch these is the lens flare effect every 10 seconds. I’m starting to worry that might be one of those little things that if it permeates the movie is REALLY going to annoy me.
Vic
Vic, the lens flare is caused because this version of Trek takes place in an alternate reality where lens flares are the norm. You don’t even need to be looking out of a lens to see them.
I agree the I-Bridge sucks the total package out of this film (Lord Garth), as well as the puberty factor of the crew. The age difference between Kirk and Pike is X-Games extreme and the Bridge looks like it comes with an extended warranty package and a 2 year “Geek Squad” matenance contract.
However one way or another, like most I’m looking forward to seeing this.
I’m hoping the film will shoot to kill, but its looking like it will only stun.
Taking off my Red Shirt now,,,
Garth from Darkhorizons.com (who has seen the film) told me that the lens flare is not as prevalent through the entire film as it is in these clips.
Vic
@Vic
They must have used multi-modal reflection sorting to decrease the amount of acretion matter within the articulation frame. This is turn would cause a random flux in sub-space that would absorb the photon fluctuations.
Romulan ale, anyone?
Yes!
You know what. This is going to be fun. They’re not my Trek, but I’m really liking this. It’s a nice take, and gives me the characters I love, though not exactly. I’m eager now; especially with positive premiere reviews.
Interesting point of view, Doug, I can’t wait to see the reaction this film generates…
Looks like a lot of fun. Urban is dead on as McCoy. Looks like Abrams has managed to generate enough fun for today’s audience but keep the spirit of the old series for old fans like myself. With that great last trailer and the positive reviews it has garnered I can’t wait.
Does Rob Keyes work for Paramount? “These videos are awesome and Dr. McCoy is awesome”. Oh, wow! How totally rad, dude!
I think it’s safe to say that no one who writes for this blog is going to write anything negative about the film, no matter how bad the writing is.
Ah Bill, if this film sucks I’ll be ripping it to shreds…
@Bill
You are mistaken, sir. We are not “shills” for any studio. Just read over our Wolverine posts and our views on Transformers for verification on that.
This movie simply happens to look GOOD to us – sorry if you disagree. But does that make you an employee of Fox Studios, wanting Wolverine to trounce Star Trek at the box office?
I’m a long time (and older) TOS fan, but the franchise was whithering on the vine and for it to continue it needed fresh blood. I’m not a canon freak so I can deal with SOME changes and a new take, reboot or whatever you want to call it as long as it’s true to the spirit of the original series.
If you can’t, that’s your problem, not ours – but don’t be accusing us of pimping a crappy movie. If we thought it looked awful, we’d say so. PLENTY of examples of that in regards to other movies here on Screen Rant.
Best regards,
Vic
@bill
Actually, many of the ScreenRant writers have commented negatively about the look of the ship and the bridge. But like another poster said on another thread, the ship does grow on you. So far, everything I’ve read about the actually film have been positive (from people who have actually seen it). I just hope it stays that way.
