Paramount Pictures will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek this summer when they release Star Trek Beyond in theaters on July 22. However, several anxious fans will have already seen the film before then. Two days prior – July 20 – the studio will hold the official premiere of Beyond at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 in a special outdoor IMAX screening, which is the first of its kind. It will also include a concert performance by the San Diego symphony orchestra composed by Michael Giacchino.
There were 500 attendees (and their plus ones) given passes to the premiere during last month’s Star Trek fan event, but it was never revealed how others could get tickets. It’s a question on the mind of many moviegoers, and now there’s an answer. A new contest has just been announced, and the prize is a trip to San Diego for the special screening.
Skydance (one of the production companies behind Beyond) is the driving force of the sweepstakes, giving away two separate pairs of two tickets for lucky fans. Entering is simple; all one has to do is share the trailer link from Skydance’s official YouTube channel, write one sentence about why they are a Star Trek Beyond fan, and tag Skydance on social media. Available platforms are Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, Instagram, and Twitter. It is important to note that the contest is only open to U.S. residents and runs through July 4. Full rules and regulations are available on Skydance’s website.
In addition to attending the premiere, the winners will also receive round-trip airfare from anywhere in the country, a hotel room for two nights, and $250 in spending money as they explore San Diego. All in all, this is a very nice package and a kind gesture on Skydance’s part. There’s no denying this would be an unforgettable journey for any Trekkie.
After the teaser trailer for Beyond stirred up controversy last year, Paramount seems to be making a concentrated effort to engage the fans and make them a part of Star Trek‘s golden anniversary. At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, original Captain Kirk William Shatner stated he believed the fan community was the reason why the franchise has endured for five decades, so it’s only fitting that the studio would want to put this together as a way of thanking the viewers for continuously supporting Star Trek though all the highs and lows that the last 50 years have brought.
Going to a film premiere is a treat in it of itself, but what would make everything even more memorable is if Beyond ranks among the best Star Trek films. Fortunately, it sounds like the filmmakers are on the right track. The second trailer invoked the classic Trek tone while teasing a new, exciting adventure. Not only will Beyond deconstruct the brand and illustrate why it’s still relevant today, it will also challenge the Enterprise crew in ways they haven’t been before. This could be a well-rounded film that combines the style of the rebooted series with the compelling substance that made Star Trek a favorite of sci-fi admirers across the globe.
