[Update: Check out our top 10 questions from the Star Trek 2 trailers!]

Nearly two weeks ago Paramount Pictures provided the first official look at the return of Captain Kirk and the young crew of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 via the one-minute Star Trek Into Darkness announcement trailer. In that short span of time, we were able to see nearly all of the main crew along with two new characters played by Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch, inter-spliced with action sequences and large-scale destruction.

Then came the 9-minute preview attached to most IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this weekend, offering a showcase of the crew’s ability to work together against nearly impossible odds six months after the events of the first film while on a mission to save a primitive world. The brand new two-minute Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer offers the biggest tease yet.

With questions surrounding the aliens Benedict Cumberbatch’s character eliminates in the announcement video (they’re Klingons) and the identity of Alice Eve’s character being answered (she’s playing Dr. Carol Marcus), the big mystery on everyone’s mind is that of the film’s primary antagonist. While rumors and denials surround the most commonly speculated characters of Gary Mitchell and Khan Noonian Singh - from original Star Trek series canon – the official name released for Cumberbatch’s menacing villain (and that featured in some extra secret footage our own Vic Holtreman witnessed) is John Harrison, a name unfamiliar to the Trek faithful.

There was a character named Harrison on the Enterprise in the original series however, and that same character was on the bridge of the Enterprise in the infamous ‘Space Seed’ episode where Khan was introduced. Throughout his career on the ships five-year mission, he took on quite a few roles and at different points in time wore all three uniform colors.

The teaser only raises more questions about Harrison’s goals and motivations, and who, if any, of the characters from the Star Trek universe he really could be playing.

Official Star Trek Into Darkness plot synopsis:

  1. Interest piqued. But it still doesn’t help that Orci & Kurtzman are the scribes. Complete hacks.

    • Please Ignur Rant.

Your interest Piqued when you saw the first trailer. Do not deny..DO NOT DENY IT!

      • Haha. You’re right. My interest have been piqued since Cumberbatch signed on but this trailer solidified it.

    • Love how they keep teasing the Enterprise getting destroyed.

      • i wouldnt be surprised with them introducing the new insignia from the movies..but to me thats not the Enterprise crash into the water…looks more like an NX class

        • I completely agree! The warp nacelles and pylon assembly don’t look like the Enterprises.

  2. Someone call JJ and tell him Synder wants his Man Of Steel trailer back!!!!!!!

    • Who cares, it’s not like Zack Snyder does anything good anyways.

    • OMG seriously! WOW.

      Still looks awesome though…

    • Yup, seen both trailers and the two are really nothing alike. You should stop trying to troll because you suck at it.

  3. That looks incredible.

    • +1

  4. It looks like they did some minor changes to the ship on the outside and for some reason those caskets don’t look like caskets at all…They look like chambers of some short.

    • Mh they kida remind me of the pod they put spock in when they airlocked his deaddbody at his funeral in the old movies. Star trek 3 i think

      • that was a torpedo

  5. The thing that’s been bothering me and it’s small but could paint a big picture…Why Pavel is in Engineering and wearing red? Who is at his station on the bridge?

I know were still trying to figure out the Villain but I still think Gary Mitchell is John Harrison.

I think that because if he was serving in Star fleet then his name and his picture is already in the star fleet database as Gary Mitchell then he comes back after changing his appearance or getting older.

He would need to have an Alias…

Someone replaced Pavel at some point at Navigation…

    • In the other time line. Star Trek the Motion Picture, Chekov was in charge of security for the Enterprise, also in reference in The Search for Spock when he assured Kirk he had personaly secured Mr.Spocks Quarters.

      So, it fits.

  6. 1:13 – Dead Space 2!

    • Hehe, my thoughts exactly.

  7. Nice idea with the double voiceover here. First I’m guessing is Captain Pike. Sounds very much like an end of life speech, a final monologue before whatever has attacked him (presumably John Harrison) kills him. Fits in tone with the suggestion that John Harrison and Captain Kirk are (Hollywood cliche ahoy) two sides of the same coin.

Anyways, enjoy superstardom, Mr Cumberbatch, for I feel it is coming your way.

    • Just to note (to myself I guess), the construction of the trailer is interesting. Pike giving a big (dying?) speech, then cutting to a mass funeral of someone connected to Starfleet (again, Pike), then cutting to John Mitchell and his voiceover beginning.

Maybe it’s misdirection, but if it isn’t it’s suggesting Hamilton kills Pike, leading him to being caught and thrown in the Brig.

      • Let’s just call John Mitchell

  8. It’s interesting J.J. decided to give Kirk the “…needs of the the many” scene instead of Spock. He defiantly wants to rewrite the time line.

  9. Wow! Incredible trailer. I don’t think I’ve been this exited over a Trek movie since First Contact in 1996.

The brief footage showing the pods looks suspiciously like cryogenic tanks. Also Harrison’s comments regarding family might suggest he’s trying to protect his?

It’s looking more and more likely that it really is Khan. I’m not disappointed in this but it would have been lovely to have Gary Mitchell instead.

    Can’t wait!

    • I still think John Harrison is Gary Mitchell

      • Time will tell Aaron. One thing is for certain though: This film will be AWESOME!

  10. Isnt revealing the antagonist prior to the movie release actually good? Like “The Dark Knight” trilogy benefited from all the pre-release hype about their super villains…

    • There is a case to be made for both. Personally I wouldn’t mind being blown away by a surprising reveal of the villain the first time I see the movie. Plus, with Batman, there are so many iconic super villains that you could speculate forever. When it comes to Star Trek there are plenty of “villains” in the way of Klingons, Romulans, The Doomsday Machine but Khan is above and beyond them all in terms of recognition (except maybe for klingons) At least in the view of the general public who may not care much about Trek. But Khan has a place in 80′s pop culture so more people might know who he is. I guess my point is with Batman, the reveal gets people talking because they can finally narrow it down. With Star Trek, a reveal just means it is probably Khan lol. Non Trekkies may not even know who the hell Gary Mitchell is XD

  11. Just did a little check

There were 6 Consitution Class Ships that start NCC-17

Now, considered The USS Consitution NCC-1700, Enterprise of Course, , NCC-1703 USS Hood USS Lexington NCC 1709 USS Defiant Defiant 1764.

I know the Farragut had an NCC-170, but I am not sure of the exact number.

So,any of those ships can be the NCC-17XX, I do not think it is the Enterprise, just a tease of the NCC-17XX.

    Who knows?

    • ncc-1701 is the enterprise…not 1700

      • No, USS Constitution NCC-1700, Enterprise of course.

I did not think I had to put NCC-1701 for Enterprise. Or the fact the Comma

Or did you totally miss USS Constitution NCC-1700?

      • @Strwarsfan77.

Did you really miss the CONSTITUTION CLASS SHIPS?

Albeit, some of the class starts off with NCC-16XX and the Constellation was NCC-1017 as it was a just a re-dress of the Enterprise due to budge constraints.

Now, normally do not mind being corrected. But darn. you did not even read what I said.

Last time Kirk held a Phaser Rifle in TOS was to defeat Gary Mitchell.

      • I bet he said that to all the Orion Women. :)

        • Lmao!

  12. Is that Mickey from Doctor Who?

    • Yeah that’s him, Noel Clarke!

  13. What’s with the ridge in between Cumberbatch’ eyes and the prominent forehead? He looks almost like half klingon, half human.

    • hey! thats just how cumberbatch naturally looks dont be mean!! jk you may be on to something there :D I think he could be Khan just un-80s-ified.

    • Could be Klingon Augmentation Pods.

If you’re referring to the “Space Seed” episode, they weren’t held in “Augmentation” Pods, they were held in suspended animation naval bunk beds.

      Also in this image,

We got official Klingon play. They are known to augment each other to infiltrate Starfleet.

If Cumberbatch isn’t Gary Michell, he might be Commander Kor from Season 1 of TOS.

      • Forgot to mention, that very sick girl in the hospital (in the 9min prologue) can be a victim of the Klingon Augmentation Virus.

      • What is “official Klingon play”?

        • I was referencing the quick glimpse of the dogfight in that picture. Before I read your tags, I was able to spot out in the teaser that the ship is deff Klingon. Its appearance shares a 98% similarity to that of TOS Klingon fighter.

          • Ah, I see. Ya, I’m pretty certain that’s a Klingon fighter.

            • I saw the klingon fighter and wanted to say.

              “This is Red-5 I’m going!”

              • Lock S-Foils in attack position.

    • That’s my own filename – You’ll see why soon in another post on the site :)

      • Epic! Can’t wait to see what you have to report.

      • Also seems to point to te statement made a little while ago that we’d be seeying enterprise navigating in an envirnoment we’ve never seen. Allot of people speculated water (ocean etc) but feom that brief chase scene look more like the inside of a giant space station (almost star wars 6 vibe). Could it be the wrekage of the massive station that enterprise was first docked onto in earth orbit?

        • No, because the ship rises out of the water, and water cascades down.

Now, with that said. There is no gravity in space. and water would be frozen solid in seconds.

        • I am most likely going to get banned for this.

The shots of Scotty and Kirk in dressed Uniform.

Why does it look more like a training simulation going horribly wrong.

Why would you be in dressed Uniform and then back on ship in dressed uniform.

Chekov is in his red shirt, yet you would think, if something that had Scotty and Kirk in dressed uniform, would have everyone in Dressed Uniform.

So the Attack happens while Kirk and Scotty are attending a funeral, or they are in dressed uniform for a reason?

Simulation. Notice the people in the corridor are not wearing anything colored shirt, just looks like cadet uniforms.

        • The answer about what environment it is under is in the 9min prologue. I don’t want to give it away.

  14. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

  15. In the still cut from the trailer that’s titled “Frozen Augments”, you can see two people in some sort of protective suits as well as people inside the chambers. This film is likely an alternate version of the “Space Seed” episode from the Original Series, and in the new timeline; The “Botany Bay” is discovered by someone other than Kirk and the Enterprise, possibly someone specifically looking for Khan. Maybe Khan (Cumberbatch) is revived and he goes back to Earth and assumes the identity of “John Harrison”. Khan then carries out his plan to take out his revenge on Earth from inside Starfleet.
Also, the hand on the glass opposite Spock is not Kirk, it’s John Harrison (Cumberbatch) from inside the cell he’s being held in, as seen in other shots. Maybe Spock has a personal connection to John Harrison and he is surprised and disappointed to discover his true identity?

    • Just Some Guy.

So you think. After the Physical (Which would have said THIS GUY IS 300 YEARS OLD! That might raise a red flag there?), the Scans of his finger prints, retinal scans, 4 years in the academy, learning to operate starships, the know how to detonate and entire fleet.

Travel to the Klingon Home world, battle superior stronger beings, know how to get around their complex.

And then as a One Man Weapon of Mass Destructon, not be able to break out of the brig? He leaps from great distance, swings a heavy weapon like its a wiffle ball bat. Yet cant break out of a Cell?

So lets state. Khan was never evil, he was actually not like the other leaders, he ruled over a billion people, and he fled his people into space to avoid death.

His Wrath has always been the death of his wife, and that Starfleet never checked on them on Ceti Alpha V. Had they done, he and his wife would have been alive.

That was his point of revenge against Kirk, the lost of his Wife LT Marla McGivers. That was the whole point about his Wrath, not about being forced to leave earth.

Everyone thinks Khan was bad in Space Seed, he wasn’t, he was arrogant, and at the end, he accepted his fate, and he had the woman he loved.

Not to mention he was basically defeated with a engineering pipe.

    • I just don’t think Khan would give a damn if you knew who he was because that’s Khan he doesn’t need to hide anything

  16. I just want to see this movie already dammit!

  17. Benedict Cumberbatch sounds a lot like Jean Luc Picard in this trailer. Perhaps Picard has traveled back thru time, to his youth when he had hair, to destroy the Federation from within! Ha Ha!

    • Very similar voice, I heard that too.

  18. Both trailers are pretty cool, but im not quite “hooked” yet, I can’t explain it. Im still excited for the film next year, but I havn’t seen anything that has blown me away yet. The new Man of Steel trailer was just incredible, and that is still the film I am looking forward to the most next year. Still excited for more Star Trek (don’t get me wrong) but I just need more. But, as of now, Star Trek into Darkness looks promising…

    • I agree with this. Still very much looking forward to star trek based on the strength of the last movie, thought it was the best movie of 2009.

But it’s MoS all the way for me unless the wolverine trailer is really something special.

      • Yeah, im looking forward to The Wolverine too, but I need to see a trailer first, lol.

  19. Klingon Augmentation Pods

That goes back to what I was saying in an early post

In the 23rd Century money isn’t a necessity and big business doesn’t exist either so in the name of hell is there a CEO in the 23rd Century.

This CEO had to be in charge of a genetics company that was doing experiments and I Still strongly believe that part of this movie is about the Origins of the Klingon’s and that this CEO wasn’t tied to Star fleet at all.

Leaving me to believe that a human created The Klingons now the real question is…What went wrong that they ended up on Kronos? We know Welker has a ship so maybe the experiments were too dangerous and he banned from earth and took his experiments else where…

Elsewhere being what would later be known as Kronos and it’s possible his experiments turned on his and killed him.

  20. The point I made earlier

If something happened to Gary Mitchell and they left him for dead or deserted him they’d change all that information in the database and let’s face it you aren’t going to worry about someone you think is dead coming back for revenge.

Gary Mitchell is probably like hmmm…they think me to be dead then i’ll play dead and change my appearance and under go a name change

    • Its Sybok.

  21. Looks like Bones and Scotty may be more impressive in this one.

  22. We already know that Delta Vega was already used in the first movie so the idea of leaving Gary Mitchell there is out…

If Klingons were created by Peter Welker’s character and this was pre-star fleet or the federation then this could be a first contact movie

The fight sequence with “John Mitchell” we can call him John Mitchell where he has the gun and he jumps… That’s not earth…I have a feeling it’s Kronos and how is it possible that in this timeline Gary Mitchell was stranded or left for dead on Kronos.

The Klingons probably stumble across and try to kill him and since he has these godlike powers he uses them and The Klingons look up to him as a god so they are probably going to worship him like a god

  23. Looks very well done I look forward to it

  24. Is this going to be on YouTube soon for those without Quick Time?

  25. Doesn’t anyone remember colonel Green and his involvement into eugenics?

  26. My guess is the speech isn’t directed towards pike, but rather towards the actor standing in the brig, and geared more to the fallicy of the incorruptible, always makes the right decision starfleet captain mold we’ve come to expect. I’m guessing its poor decisions by said actor that gets his crew killed. It also shows him sitting in what appears to be a captains chair at one point looking rather diabolical, and the “into darkness” title might be an indicator of how far he’s willing to descend into madness to undo (somehow) his poor decision that killed his crew. Spocks trembling hand at the end, well, that is supposed to obviously evoke wrath of khan memories, but I don’t think the scene is what we’ll expect it to be. In fact, it may be the brig/captain/actors final redemption, as many point out in the comments he appears to be of mixed heritage. All speculation, of course. Just my guess

  27. I think that this John Harrison dewd is the kid “Johny” that Kirk passes in the corvette in the beginning of the first Star Trek.
    Just a guess.

  28. I want Star Trek movie action figure and vehicle toys for the movie.
