‘Star Trek 2′ Teaser Trailer is Gorgeously Destructive [Updated With 40 Images]

When Star Trek: Enterprise was pulled off the air in 2005, it marked a sad conclusion to 18 consecutive years of the franchise being on TV in one form or another. It didn’t take long though, for Paramount to greenlight a new film, one that could take up the space sci-fi mantle in the absence of Star Wars.

It’s been three and a half years since J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (inspired by Star Wars) hit theaters and successfully revitalized the brand, bringing back the original crew led by Captain James T. Kirk, and we finally have our first real look at their next adventure in Star Trek Into Darkness… and it’s an epic one.

While story details have remained under the tightest of security compared to most film productions, we do know thanks to the official Star Trek Into Darkness plot synopsis that the crew of the Enterprise will be pitted against Benedict Cumberbatch’s “one man weapon of mass destruction” after Starfleet suffers a major blow. Kirk will have to earn his Captain’s chair as he balances his emotions with duty.

The teaser above is headlined by Cumberbatch and his intimidating presence, bolstered with his powerful voiceover accompanying imagery of destruction, fear, and the iconic Enterprise (or a similarly shaped vessel) crashing into the surface of Earth. Whether he represents a new take on Khan, Gary Mitchell or some other character from Star Trek history, Cumberbatch is playing a man of superhuman power.

[Update 1: The Japanese version of the trailer includes 10 seconds of additional footage, teasing a potentially important moment between what could be Kirk and Spock, conveniently similar to the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.]

[Update 3: 40 stills from the trailer]

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Stay tuned for more Star Trek 2 footage as the full trailer releases next week with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Moviegoers who check out The Hobbit in IMAX will get to see a 9 minute preview.

Into Darkness is directed by J.J. Abrams off a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci. It stars Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg.

  1. Now Imagine that voice over…but Benedict Cumberbatch as the Master in the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who

    • I think he would make an awesome master. but i dont want him to be the master because i also think he would make a great doctor to take matt smiths place.

      • I find no sense of whimsy about Cumberbatch. I could never see The Doctor in him. Whimsy is a part of The Doctor, seems to me. Even the serious ones.

    • would have loved a star trek DW crossover….

      • There is in comic-form. DW 11 and TNG.

  2. Everything about that looked awesome except for that stupid blonde chick, that was undoubtedly the fakest looking scream i have EVER seen in cinema. Even in the stills her face looks absolutely ridiculously ingenuine.

    • She doesn’t seem to have much of an acting resume. Maybe she gets killed off early on.

    • Don’t you hate it when you see someone copy what they read off of youtube, just so they sound provocative. That SCREAM is awesome.

  3. It’s a bit early for a transformers 4 trailer isn’t it?

    • your an idot

    • What a stupid comment.

  4. Not a Star Trek fan, but this trailer looks good. The shots were really dynamic. And I love it when filmmakers incorporate foreground intervention. It makes the film feel much more immersive.

  5. Awesome and intense trailer ! It seem like we’re going to get ourselves a villain (who ever he may be…) ! Oh And So excite that this is the guy VOICING SMAUG !! Epic voice

  6. Looks great, cant wait, still hate the title “star trek into darkness” just terrible, cringey & cheesy. :-/

    • That can’t be the real title, can i? I thought it was just sort of a teaser title….Oh, that is terrible.

  7. Folks.

Khan exiled himself into space, that’s why he’s saying he has returned to exact vengeance, because he felt forced into doing so. His primary purpose was to rule Earth. He put himself in suspended animation only to be resurrected centuries later to find that he can now rule not only Earth but potentially the entire known galaxy, and it sounds like someone in Starfleet (probably played by Peter Weller) would like to help him in that end.

The writers of this film have also had a hand in not only the videogames but also the tie-in comics. It’s all one big story. If you’ve already read the comics, you’d know that Gary Mitchell, in this timeline, was killed by Spock. You’d know that Kirk’s brother survived Operation: Annihilate. You’d know that the Red Matter is still out there and Romulus has claimed a right to it, and that Spock’s father Sarek has sympathies towards a group of Vulcan terrorists who think that logic dictates that Romulus should pay for their supposed part in the destruction of the Vulcan home world. You’d know that Scotty finally recovered Admiral Archer’s Beagle from space. You’d know that a mysterious figure from Starfleet is putting pressure on Admiral Pike to reign in his prize pupil, James T. Kirk.

The Gorn were the featured villain in the new videogame, if you want to know what they look like in the new timeline look up the trailer on Youtube. There are no Gorn in the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, those are Klingons and the villain is none other than Khan Noonien Singh.

That hand in the black shirt at the end of the Japanese trailer is Khan’s. I hope I’m wrong. I want Khan to live and continue to be a thorn in Kirk’s side for years to come…

    • Khan did not exile himself first off. The Eugenic Wars, the countries started to take thier country back, and were killing off the Augments. He fled Earth in 1996.

Space Seed, he was taken out of Suspended Animation and he tried to take over the Enterprise. To Kirk was able to defeat him, and he was given a choice, to live on a planet, or go back to Prison. With the Alternative, he took the Planet Ceti Alpha V and Lt Marla McGivers under threat of court martial, went with Khan because she loved him.

Wrath of Khan, was never about Venegance on Kirk for the abandonment…It was about no one checking on them, 6 months later the cataclysm on Ceti Alpha VI causes the damage on Ceti Alpha V and Khan lost his life, and some of his followers…THAT IS WHERE HIS THIRST FOR VENGANCE CAME FROM..TO AVENGE THOSE THAT HAVE DIED.

Plus, he was never in Starfleet, that is one key to the whole synopis, someone who has inner working and understanding of Star Trek, one of thier own.

      • Of course it was about vengeance in the Wrath of Khan, he wanted Vengeance on Kirk for not checking up on him and his wife dying because of it.

      • Khan definitely wanted to exact revenge on Kirk for being exiled on that planet.

    • So you saying, this Mysterious Figure cannot be the one who is the culprit?

Or even if he was Killed in the comics, how do you know he has not returned from beyond the grave, what powers does Gary Mitchell have.

    • Really do not know much about Khan do you?

Because if you knew anything about Khan, you knew he was one of the few tyrants who ruled his people with no violence, or wars within his own people. It was Khan who defended his people from the other Augment Tyrants. The people Khan looked over, did not live in fear, they were no free, but at the same time they had peace.

It was the other Tyrants who ruled with an iron fist over their people.

    • Its not Khan, its Gary Mitchell no matter what some comic books, that barely anyone has read have to say. Cumberbatch is in a black starfleet shirt. Kahn was never in Starfleet. Kahn never had the “juice” either to cause the massive destruction being displayed in this trailer. Its obviously someone with significantly more power. We know from the original series where Gary Mitchell gets his power from and Im sure Abrahms will take the opening scenes to give us his version of this happening.

      • well, on the uniform issue. In Classic Trek, Khan was put into a spare “red shirt” uniform. So that insignia on his shirt doesn’t necessarily mean that character is a member of Starfleet…ANd what would Gary Mitchell be leaping around and fighting for? He’d mind fight everyone.

        • But Khan is not a One Man Weapon os Mass destruction.

Nor would he have the ability to bring down a starship.

And it is someone within Starfleet.

          • Yeah, it would seem not be Khan either. The man is in no way ethnic, and that would be a travesty if they made him Khan. I just get no Gary Mitchell at all out of the trailer. No creepy eyes. No extended arm while he’s manipulating something. The only thing that smacks of it is the Enterprise coming out of the water like that.

      • If you remember the original Star trek, Khan was refereed as one of a group genetically enhanced men, that had superior intelligence and had superhuman strength that almost destroyed the world.

  8. Wow this looks really cool, think I am going to really enjoy the reboot.

  9. Khan is being saved for the 50th…

  10. Alice Eve i(blonde chick with short hair) looks like to be Nurse Chapel, since she is wearing blue, or the way she smiled at Kirk, maybe she is Carol Marcus?

    • She is playing Carol Marcus.

  11. excitinggg !!!

  12. Maybe this guy is the first of the genetically enhanced super tyrants, not Khan but one of them.

    • That’s seams plausible actually.

  13. But what’s his beef with kurk? Why does he want him back on earth?
