Star Fox Zero is the forthcoming reboot of the titular franchise from creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo. Originally based on a flying fox God shrine seen by the creator, which was positioned between a series of arches that inspired the original title’s core gameplay mechanics and aesthetic representation, the series has since inspired six independent titles on multiple platforms, most notably including the original 1993 Super Nintendo release and its immediate sequel, Star Fox 64, for the Nintendo 64 in 1997.
Alongside such Nintendo titles of the 1990s as Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong 64, Miyamoto’s classic 3D science-fiction rail shooter and flight simulator still has its fans, who are now patiently awaiting the sixth title to be released for the Wii U. Luckily, players can now keep an officially designated release date in mind, and put aside the appropriate funds to acquire the new game upon release.
According to an official press release from Nintendo, the new game will see release in April 2016, and is set to support a novel control scheme using both the player’s TV screen and the screen on the Gamepad. The reboot will allow players to take control of multiple vehicles to engage in intergalactic levels alongside Fox and his familiar crew.
Gamers who grew up with Miyamoto’s famous anthropomorphic team of cosmonauts will likely clamor to get their hands on Nintendo’s latest return to the classic shooter series. After a number of subsidiary titles for the Gamecube and Nintendo DS and 3DS, a full fledged console release is a turn of events for the property that is sure to being a smile to the face of many former children of the 1990s who fondly remember hours spent playing games.
Whether or not Miyamoto’s reinvention of the franchise will be a true return to form will be up to its players to decide. Regardless of the title’s ultimate overall quality, it will undoubtedly be exciting to finally get the chance to experience the product after an initial six month delay from its originally slated November 2015 release.
Star Fox Zero will be available to purchase on April 22nd, 2016.
