Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is pretty much ubiquitous in pop culture nowadays, as a result of the wrestler-turned Hollywood superstar's famously unfaltering work ethic and commitment to his craft. The Rock is currently busy with the ongoing production of the new Jumanji (now set to arrive in December 2017) and is slated to play another brawny hero next year - when Shane Black begins filming his Doc Savage adaptation, with Johnson in the role of its pulp literature-born namesake. Between that project and promoting his other upcoming 2017 films, Johnson will take the time to work on season 3 of his HBO TV show, Ballers.

The Rock is also attached to star in a number of movies that are currently in some stage of pre-production; among them, a remake of director John Carpenter's cult hit Big Trouble in Little China, a sequel to the 2015 natural disaster blockbuster San Andreas (which Johnson starred in) and Disney's film adaption of its jungle safari adventure theme park ride, Jungle Cruise. It now appears that before he works on any (all?) of those movies however, Johnson is going to star in the video game-based movie Rampage.

Deadline is reporting that New Line has set Rampage to open in U.S. theaters on April 20th, 2018; one week after the release of a currently-untitled Universal Monster Franchise Film (the first after 2017's The Mummy reboot) and two weeks before Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War kicks off the summer 2018 movie season. In addition to that, Deadline reveals that Warner Bros. has settled on a September 28th, 2018 release date for a very different sort of project altogether: the Bradley Cooper-directed A Star is Born remake.

Lady Gaga as Countess Elizabeth in American Horror Story: Hotel

A Star is Born is the third remake of the 1937 showbiz drama of the same name overall and (re)tells the story of a rising musical superstar (played in this version by Lady Gaga) and her fading celebrity icon mentor/lover (Cooper). Gaga is providing the movie's music/songs herself, with Cooper - as mentioned earlier - serving at the helm for the first time on a feature-length film, in addition to playing the male lead. A Star is Born is being positioned to serve as adult counter-programming to the two animated franchise films set to arrive a week earlier (see: Hotel Transylvania 3 and the Scooby-Doo reboot).

Rampage, by comparison, is shaping up to be more of a pure summer-style popcorn movie. Similar to the video game property that inspired it (and originated as a Bally Midway arcade game from the 1980s), Rampage revolves around a trio of giant monsters wreaking havoc on major U.S. cities and landmarks as they - you guessed it - rampage across the country. The film is being directed by Brad Peyton and co-written by Carlton Cuse; Johnson's collaborators on San Andreas, as it were. Based on its new release date, filming on Rampage now looks to begin by no later than spring of 2017, around the same time that Johnson returns to the big screen in Fast 8.
