Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee says he has at least 50 other superhero characters in his vault that he has yet to reveal to the public. Without question, Lee is one of – if not the greatest – comic book creator of all-time, who, along with such collaborators as Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby co-created such icon characters as The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and The Incredible Hulk.
Better yet, he’s seen in his wondrous lifetime many of his characters come to life on the big screen, most recently with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War coming through the pipeline (all of which, naturally, will feature cameos by Lee).
Yet somewhere in the veteran comic book creator-turned-film producer’s vault of ideas, dozens more superheroes exit. In an interview with Variety after his handprint ceremony at the TLC Chinese Theatre Tuesday, Lee revealed that he has quite a few more characters that he’s created that never revealed. He says:
“I have about 50 [characters] that I’ve already developed that I haven’t shown to anybody. And someday I will. But, there’s no need for me, really, to do anymore now … One of them [the characters] has a superpower that you’ve never seen before. They all have new superpowers, but I can’t tell you. I’m sorry!”
It’s wonderful to see Lee in such great spirits, considering that his wife of 69 years, 93-year-old Joan Lee, passed away earlier this month after she suffered a stroke. He’s been out and about quite frequently, making stops at the Avengers: Infinity War set in New York, and the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, where he was honored as a Disney Legend.
As spry as ever at age 94, its heartening that Lee has such a positive outlook on the future, and like his limitless vision, he’s not putting a date on revealing all the character ideas that he has tucked away. But now that he’s spilled the beans on all his untold ideas, fans and industry professionals will no doubt be asking him for more details, especially about the character that has a superpower that people have never seen before.
With any luck, that character will be named Stan Lee, and fans will finally get a look inside his mind – in an imaginative comic book/film sort of way – to see how it ticks. Lee has proven time and again that when you put your mind to it, you can move other people’s imaginations in such a way that they will find the superhero within themselves.
