‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′: Stan Lee Wants a Bigger Cameo

Published 2 years ago by

The upcoming sequel to this year’s The Amazing Spider-man is coming together fast. The film – which will hit theaters everywhere in summer 2014 – has already secured the return of director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, and all signs point to Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx joining the cast as classic Spidey villain, Electro.

However, no Marvel film is complete without a signature cameo from Stan Lee. The man who co-created Spider-man with Steve Ditko back in 1962 had a memorable appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man as a clueless librarian (see the clip above), and we’ve already heard early details about who he’ll play in next year’s Iron Man 3.

Now, courtesy of Collider, we’ve got word that Lee is hoping for an even more significant role in The Amazing Spider-man 2. Here’s what Lee had to say about his cameo in the first film as well as his hopes for the sequel:

[The first film's cameo] was all right, but it wasn’t big enough. You refer to it as a cameo. Couldn’t we think of it as a leading role? Or couldn’t we think of it as a key scene that the whole movie sort of hinges on? People haven’t stopped talking about it. But I think in the next one, maybe we ought to go a little deeper and probe the real me, what I have to offer… People are still talking about that cameo and saying “why wasn’t that longer?”

While Lee’s statement retains his signature wit, his message remains clear. Since his last cameo was better integrated into the main plot of a Marvel film, it looks like Lee is hesitant to return to the throwaway scenes in which he has typically been featured in the past. One can’t blame him for wanting to play a more crucial – albeit still brief – role in the next film.

Would you like to see Lee get a bigger (i.e. more important) role in The Amazing Spider-man 2, or does a little Lee go a long way? Let us know in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-man 2 will be released May 2, 2014.

  1. Just let him play J. Jonah Jameson already.

    • In the previous spiderman films he wanted this stan the man lee even said the character was created bassed on him so give him the role

  2. Stan Lee is good for a quick, funny scene. I don’t like the ones where he is apart of the story line, if you know what I mean. His scenes should be small, short but give humor to the movie.

By the way someone wrote that he only created Spider-Man which is not true. He created the ideas for the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Spider-Man, the Avengers, bring Cap back from the dead, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor and all those guys. Steve Ditko may have drawn Spider-Man but Stan Lee created the characters, adding depth to Peter Parker. He didn’t just write the stories, he made the characters. He made them almost real.

Stan’s like what, 90 or something? Let him do this. Let him have cameos. I always like to see him on the screen.

  3. Really people!! i understand he made this stuff, but if his ego demands a larger role then that, he should lose all 30sec-3min bits in these movies! i don’t wanna rant but as someone said “he might have made this but it has gotten better with out his input”….. i know insert your hate now at my remark … but come’on …. we really don’t need to see him in every movie just so he can get his “3 min”, how much would the story change if he wasent in it? not much at all.. argue as you might, but i bet you wont really find someone who cares that much if he was in or out of the movies.
i think its the stores that really matter “yes, insert more hate about how he made this stuff and how he made them real…. but come, on how real is a super hero????? not real at all!!!!” in short … no .. let fade away……

    • Yes the story might not change but one of the big things that people have liked about these movies is looking for Stan the Man Cameos and truth to be told I myself and others that I know would like to see a scene where he interacts with the character he created in the movie vice just popping in

  4. I like him having the small cameos, generally it is an unexpected bit of funny party way through, I like the fact that he’s there but I don’t think a bigger role would suit him really, the cameos acknowledge the work he’s put in to spider-man and other marvel comics but if he where to play an actual character then his cameos would seem out of place as that character would suddenly be popping up all over the marvel universe in the films.

Leave the small amusing cameos for Lee to have but don’t give him a bigger role, that would almost ruin him being there.

  5. if gwen stacey dies in the amazing spider man 2 it will make the movie trash… give Stan Lee a good role, J.Jonah Jameson is a great idea for stan lee.

    • i just want to say why not just give the ol’ bugger what he wants. he could cark it anytime soon then there will be no stan lee at all. i mean as a comic book writer i’d want at a decent amount of screen time if they wanted to make a movie from my comic series. *just saying* i understand having him in or not would change the story drastically at all. it would just be our way of saying thanks to a legend and most likely giving him his dying wish

  6. This movie had the best Stan Lee cameo ever… of all time. I guess i could probably see Stan as J.J.J i think that would be so funny if the guy who created Spider-Man played the guy who hated him the most in the world, i’d be laughing my a** off lol. But i’d rather have him in a cameo instead of a lead role, maybe (assuming that Gwen dies) Peter could be really distraught (obviously) and searching for the villain who killed her (at this point it looks like its either Electro or Green Goblin) and while he’s beating on someone in an alleyway an old homeless man could notice and try and talk to Spider-Man who reacts violently by grabbing him and slamming him against a wall and the homeless man could ask, ” Does it make you feel better? What your doing?” and they could get into a conversation that would help Peter think about why he’s angry, and try to recall why he became Spider-Man in the first place, then he could ask himself did i really start this to help people because on my first nights out i was really attacking criminals for revenge against the criminal that killed Uncle Ben and now it looks like i’m doing the same thing.
