SR Picks [Artwork]: Jocks vs. Nerds at the Box Office

Comic book vs sports movies

The gang over at MovieFill.com comes up with some pretty interesting ways of putting out movie-related statistics. This time they compared the box offices take of “Nerd movies” to those of “Jock movies.” In other words, superhero movies vs. sports themed films – and it’s a blowout: The nerds kicked the jocks’ collective butts. :)

Not only did the superhero films make almost four times as much money, they actually had a higher rating from critics on average than the sports-themed movies (that one surprised me).

They came up with this spiffy graphic listing the box office grosses of both genres over the last 10 years (click on the image below for a much larger version):

Jocks vs Nerds at the box office

Average per film of over $154MM for superhero movies vs $39MM for sports movies. Also overall superhero flicks garnered an average rating of 54% positive reviews vs. 43% positive based on the figures from RottenTomatoes.com.

Now of course this isn’t a definitive list (not EVERY sport was included – they tried to keep the number from each genre the same) but it’s kind of fun thing – especially if you’re more of a nerd than a jock. :-P

  1. Of course the jocks’ response to that will be: “We’re too busy out [insert whatever cool or provocative activity here] instead of watching movies!”

There, I’ll say it for them…

  2. The Longest Yard remake is the highest grossing sports movie?? Really?

  3. I’m surprised Any Given Sunday isn’t in there somewhere.

  4. With a lot of sports movie being comedies, it’s really unfair to compare them comic book movies which have a higher name recognition than even a remake of the Longest Yard.

    …and Any Give Sunday stunk.

  5. I wonder if they also considered the budget of the films, also. I bet the comic book movies also averaged 4x the price to make, too.

I like both types of movies, though. IMO, some of the best movies ever made were sports movies: Major League, Field of Dreams, The Longest Yard and The Replacements are 4 of my favorite movies of all-time. They’re just not the visual spectacle that movies like The Dark Knight and Spider-Man are.

  6. Can’t argue with you there, Zipper! Did AGS really not even do $10 million at the box office though?

Good point Andy. Budgets and actors’ fees must balance things out a little more there.

  7. The only sports films I like are: Major League, Invincible, Remember The Titans, and The Replacements.

  8. Well not to mention that Spider-Man is more well known than the TC Williams Titans(Remember The Titans) and Batman is more well liked than the Boston Red Sox(Fever Pitch)

  9. Well, of course nerd movies get a better over-all rating. Sports flicks all have the same plot. 8P
