splice movie Splice International Trailer

The wait is nearly over for Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice – about two scientists who create a new being by mixing together genetic material from humans, kangaroos, birds, and other living organisms.

As we’ve seen from the previous trailers, the result is not pretty.

Optimum Releasing, the international distributor for Splice, has supplied us with another glimpse at the highly-anticipated film. The trailer contains mild spoilers – featuring Dren, the Splice creation, in her later stages of development.

Check out the trailer after the jump – but don’t say we didn’t warn you:

The new trailer definitely focuses a bit more on the horror aspect of the sci-fi horror hybrid – though, I’m personally hoping the film keeps a healthy balance between the two. The earlier trailers were both disturbing and strangely charming – a mixture that will be extremely important in the final product.

Should the film be too heavy on the horror aspect, I think it’ll lose some of the magic inherent in the film’s premise – which is essentially grounded in both the glory and fallout of scientific discovery. A lot of big budget action-horrors tend to focus a lot on the disaster that comes after pushing the boundaries of science – without spending much time reveling in the joy of the creative process.

The Species films, which Splice is often compared to, shared the same basic notion: human DNA + non-human DNA = trouble. While Species was certainly an entertaining ride, in the end, its monster lacked the most interesting aspect of humanity – a conscience.

I’ve still got my fingers crossed that Splice will do a better job of harnessing the humanity in Dren – if for no other reason than to shatter that humanity to bits by the end.

What do you think of the new Splice trailer? What would you like to see in the final film?

Splice is set for a June 4, 2010 release.

  1. :D I cant wait……. WOOT.

  2. man that movie looks so freakin good, cant wait!

  3. I was about to buy a human/kangaroo/bird mix at my pet store, but have since changed my mind.

  4. Sometimes I can’t believe what is written on this site. The Species Monster lacked a conscience?!? It’s a monster…it’s not supposed to have a conscience. Species was a great movie, and was written and directed exactly as it should have been…as a monster movie. It lacked nothing. We don’t want a chick flick….we want a movie about how nature is tampered with and it all goes horribly wrong. That’s what Splice looks to be and I think it will be a great movie.

  5. Will it be released in the UK?

If Dave Hewlett is in it, I’ll watch anything! Rodney ‘Meredith’ Mckay is one of the best characters ever created.

    End of.

  6. Why does every hybrid creature, or genetically engineered creature have to be a blood thirsty monster? What is inherent in the DNA of humans, kangaroos (kangaroos? are you effin’ kidding me?) or birds that would make a violent creature? This movie looks DUMB.

  7. hmmm….
that’s strange, i could have sworn that hybrid looks exactly
like a Greek mythology monster “Harpie”…. lol
