The Spirit Trailer: Action Movie Or Soft Core Porn?

the spirit trailer2 The Spirit Trailer: Action Movie Or Soft Core Porn?

There was a Youtube, bootleg version of the first full trailer for The Spirit out a couple of days ago, but I refuse to put those crappy versions up here on Screen Rant. Once those pop up you just have to wait a day or two and usually a decent version pops up, so here you go.

Now by “decent” I mean video quality and not the content of the trailer itself because my first gut-check reaction is that this isn’t looking too good at the moment…

I’ll admit I have ZERO familiarity with the comic series this movie is based on. Although Frank Miller (writer-artist of 300 and Sin City) is directing it, he is not the author of the source material – Will Eisner created the masked crime-fighting character in 1940. This is also Frank Miller’s first solo try at directing a film (he co-directed Sin City with Robert Rodriguez).

Now for all I know, this may actually be very faithful to the source material, and I understand that very unique visual styles have worked for movies based on Frank Miller stories – but to me this trailer looks like some weird, avant-garde soft core porn film.

Am I off base here? Do you think this actually looks good?

The Spirit opens on December 25, 2008.

  1. Wow. I had some interest in this film before I saw this trailer, but now I have ZERO interest in it. Looking like a bigger budget Skinemax film

  2. My god, that looks soooo freaking stupid. The coolest thing about this “trailer” was actually seeing a full shot of The Spirit in costume. This looks like complete bullcrap. Nothing like the comic books. Damn Frank Miller for doing this…

  3. Uhhh … I thought the first teaser made this movie look stupid … but now I am sure I think the movie will be stupid, but it does look interesting from a weird ‘what the?” standpoint. Will probably be a rental

  4. The movie, to me, looks terrible.
But, the costume looks pretty great.

  5. Looks like crap. Same thing I thought of the 300 trailer and I was right about that one too.

Frank Miller is an overrated director, in my opinion. The epitome of style over substance. I might as well watch a string of perfume commercials for 90 minutes.

  6. @jerseycajun Ah, I really enjoyed “300″ (for what it was).

  7. I wouldn’t write it off based on this trailer… An innuendo or two and romancing several women seems to be the style of a 1940s detective movie. or at least what they are trying to project with this movie. It looks like there is going to be a certain level of “camp” to this along the lines of “The Phantom” or even the 60′s Batman TV series… And I could be wrong. This could be “Dick Tracy: Supernatural Pornstar”.

So, other than a conflict with a guy named Octopus and a thing for women, what is this movie about?

  9. What is it with Miller and his obsession with Nazi imagery? All of his comics have it and apparently his movie too. He is a has been, he’s done nothing worthwhile in years.

  10. In the open discussion yesterday I linked and talked about how the first trailer most people think was awful.

This trailer I thought continued the awfulness for the first half. Then they showed Scarlet Johansson and Sam L who I did not know was in this, and that brought it from ‘awful’ to ‘meh’ which means I may rent it, hehe.

  11. Great Googly-Moogly that was awful..Is there a dead skunk in here somewhere?..Based on this trailer I wouldn’t watch it for free at home on the day it is given it’s theatrical release….
After Dimension Films sees this I am willing to bet they won’t let Miller near a sequel to Sin City…

  12. I think the only real good he’s done in the last ten years was Dark Knight Strikes Again. And I guess some of All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder.

  13. I am a big fan of Miller’s work, from comics to movies. I thought Sin City was great as a comic and then the movie!! Wow! And I can’t wait for the sequel. I thought 300 was awesome, with the exception of its 147 uses of the variances of the word “Sparta”.

I’ve never had the opportunity to read any of The Spirit comics, but from what I gather, a romance for the guy wasn’t uncommon.

To me, this doesn’t look too far off from one of Miller’s very own short stories of Sin City.

My gut feeling…. if you liked Sin City, you’re gonna like this one too.

  14. All Star Batman and Robin has been widely looked at as a piece of garbage and basically just a Sin City spin on Batman, not to mention the series has been out since 2005 and as a monthly series they have yet to see issue #10. TDKSA was a horrible mishmash of ego and editor idiocy. One of the worst comics I have ever read, no where near his Dark Knight Returns work. He is all hype at this point.
Odd how that happens too. Alan Moore is in the same boat at this point, his earlier work is much better as it lacks the ego of his later works.

  15. I may have a chance to meet Gerard Butler at Comic-Con and it will take all my willpower to not say in a gravelly voice:

    Tonight we dine in Hell!

    when I meet him.

    :-P

  16. This is definitely a skip it. 300 was okay, Sin City was meh. These films are severely overrated. This one is definitely a skip it.

  17. I loved Sin City. 300 was just OK , but this movie looks god awful. Some people think it looks better when Samual L Jackson shows up but I think that’s when it look even worst. It goes from soft core porn to extreme camp.

  18. Eisner was big on b&w visual contrasts, and the strip always had a lot of female villains who were exaggerated versions of the likes of Joan Crawford and Jane Russell. However, his drawing style was very fluid and curvy: the exact opposite of Miller’s brutal, angular linework, and seemingly the way this has been filmed. Miller really shouldn’t be removing it from reality to this extent. He needs a strong ’40s-ish gangster storyline, not just some vigilante leaping about on rooftops in slo-mo. And the whole point of The Octopus was that you never saw his face! Never! Has someone taken a bet on how messed-up they can make Samuel L look in a movie or what? If Miller’s own work was treated like this he’d be having kittens, the creepy sod.

Shane, I agree with every word. TDKSA was so bad it was surreal. Hideous, evil colouring – like Lynn Varley was under the influence of ether and barely knew how to turn a computer on.

Vic, GB’ll not thank you for that, y’know! That must have become his Alan Rickman “Grabthar’s hammer” thing by now.

  19. mmm I don’t know what to say really.
It is not what I expected after seeing the first trailer and Sin City. But I still think this leans a bit toward Sin City, well it is a SIN City after all, (I know, this has nothing to do with Sin City, but I expected another Sin City-like film, so I am still curious about it!). Keep those updates coming :)

    greets

  20. I thought trailers made you WANT to see the movie not AVOID it.

  21. Looks interesting so far… I want to be entertained, pushed, lost in a good story wanting to turn the next ‘page’ and to see things that I haven’t seen before. The Spirit looks like a good start! “To Peace.” – Stark

  22. shoot ill watch this i think it looks cool and ill partake in anything frank miller is involved in other than those books where he drew the pictures and didnt write the story

  23. yeeeesh

the first trailer interested me but this…..

I think this is exactly the kryptonite that Miller needs actually. To reign him back in.

I am a huge fan of the guys work. Years back, he experienced the true shittiness of hollywood that made him say that he would never work there again (the Robocop years etc)

We get SIN CITY which is Rodriquez’s love letter to Miller and a great comic series that brings Miller back with little to NONE of the BS he had to deal with before – what happens – Sin City does GREAT business and in true hollywood fashion, after 300 (which I loved – more than Sin City actually) does great, hollywood does the ‘blank check’ thing cause his material has made much $$$, gives him total slack and let the guy do whatever the F he wants.

And how many times have we seen THAT go right?

And regarding the comment about Miller being an ‘overrated director’….. ummm his name was on Sin City because Rodriguez wanted him actively involved – as much as he lent a hand on set, I don’t believe what he did was truly ‘directing’.

He had nothing to do with 300 regarding directing….. so its hard for him to be overrated if this is his first directing gig.

  24. Saw the trailer and it looked stupid.

The entire thing looked like a bad comedy.

  25. The first trailer actually had me excited; very film noir, very Dark Deco. An edgier version of Eisner’s character.

This trailer just makes me think it’s going to be another Dick Tracy or The Shadow (oh, God, The Shadow, ick)…without the semi-redeeming soundtrack and awesome Dustin Hoffman cameo.

Still, I’m not willing to give up all hope. Miller and Eisner were friends; I’d like to think that Frank has enough sense not to totally ruin everything that one of comics most influential artists ever accomplished. If he does, I’m pretty sure the fanboy riot that follows will insure he’ll never sell another book with his name on it.

  26. @Techie

Funny you should say that. My buddy Pete over at /Film said it looked like it could be “the ‘Dick Tracy’ of this generation.”

    :-)

    Vic

  27. i think this movie looks amazing. its not all about his obbsession with women thats just a big part of it. i cant wait for it to come out in december:]

  28. @Nikki

Well they showed more footage at Comic-Con and to say that it didn’t impress the crowd would be an understatement.

    Vic

  29. Someone actually thinks this looks amazing? Wow. I think it looks like a more violent and sexually driven Dick Tracy with Sin City look to it. Looks to be possibly the next worst comic film ever. I’m wondering can this be worse than B&R
