Spider-Man star Tom Holland reveals his secret for making sure that his version of Peter Parker maintains a distinctive demeanor. The actor debuted his iteration of the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Since then, he’s appeared in the solo movies Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Holland’s also had supporting turns in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Now that he’s settled into the portrayal, currently filming for Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, many fans have argued that Holland excels in the role of Peter. Much of the justification comes down to how he manages to capture the protagonist’s exuberance and relative innocence. In new remarks, the actor sheds some light on how he makes sure that Peter maintains the same general demeanor throughout several films.

Speaking with The Los Angeles Times to promote his upcoming movie Cherry, Holland shed light on how he distinguishes between his performances. The actor cited physicality as a key component of his approach, using Peter as an example of how a certain kind of movement can be utilized to convey specific character traits. You can read Holland’s quote below.

Physicality for me is the biggest way I try to distinguish between the characters that I play. If you look at Peter Parker, he’s very bubbly, and I do this thing where I leave my arms really loose. It gives him this juvenile, kid-like physicality.

Holland’s remarks fall in line with one of the biggest arguments for why he makes a good Spider-Man. Given his training as a gymnast and his experience as a dancer, the actor adds a crucial non-verbal element to his work as the Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slinger. It allows Holland to express what Peter is feeling not only through his expressions, but also through a lackadaisical posture and jittery hand movements. Given that Peter is often wearing his mask, and is often trying to hide how he really feels otherwise, these ostensibly small physical shifts can do a lot to improve Peter’s persona. This is evident in the memorable scene from Spider-Man: Homecoming where Peter is trapped under the rubble. The hero’s desperation and resilience can be witnessed in the actor’s slight but precise movements as much as his words.

It’s helped Holland stand out in the role to the point where some fans are concerned about the possibility that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is diluting the best version of Spider-Man by bringing in actors from other adaptations and possibly expanding the narrative’s scope. Certainly, in most contexts, the idea of a multi-verse would be appealing. And if Holland hadn’t left such a positive stamp on Peter, it’s likely that audiences would more wholeheartedly welcome the rumors of former familiar faces returning. But it can be argued that Holland hasn’t yet had a chance to truly explore his version of Spider-Man. He certainly has a good idea of what the iconic hero should be.
