Rhys Ifans Cast as Villain in ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

On the heels of last week’s confirmation that Emma Stone would be portraying Gwen Stacy in director Marc Webb’s forthcoming Spider-Man reboot, Sony has just revealed a similarly surprising but solid casting decision.

According to a studio press release, British actor Rhys Ifans has signed on to play the film’s villain. Ifans received a BAFTA nomination for his breakout performance in Notting Hill and has since appeared in films like The Replacements, Hannibal Rising, and Greenberg.

Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, praises Ifans and reveals what ultimately landed him the role:

“We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans.  After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

Director Marc Webb adds:

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of theirrelationships with Peter Parker.  Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

But which character is that exactly? Evidently we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to find out, as they’ve decided not to release that information for the time being. Rumors persist that The Lizard could be the web-slinger’s main adversary in the film, but recent rumblings also suggest Electro might might be the villain. Ifans would definitely be a better fit for the latter in my opinion, but at this point it really could be anyone.

While I continue to question the necessity of this reboot, I do appreciate the unexpected but promising casting choices they’ve made so far. Andrew Garfield was a left-field choice for the title role, but his work in films like the Red Riding trilogy and The Social Network show a great deal of potential. Emma Stone is also quite gifted and even though I think they dropped the ball by casting her as Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane, she’s definitely an upgrade from the love interests in Raimi’s Spider-Man films.

Which villain will Ifans play?

Even without confirmation of who he’s playing, Ifans is an extremely welcome addition in my book. He’s one of the most underrated scene-stealers working right now and the level of exposure a high-profile role like this could grant him would be more than deserved.

When Michael Fassbender was reportedly given the choice between X-Men: First Class and the Spider-Man reboot, I thought for sure that meant Spidey’s villain was The Lizard. Fassbender would certainly have been too old for Electro (ditto for Christoph Waltz) so it is possible there are two villains in the film? Or might it be someone else entirely? Vulture? Venom? Let the speculation commence!

The Spider-Man reboot was written by James Vanderbilt and is being produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin. Filming starts in December and the film will be released in 3D on July 3, 2012.

  1. He’s most likely either gonna b Electro or Carnage because of his acting style and figure.

    • Im used to having my username “Richard” on other sites that i thought i commented that lol!

  2. He was funny as Spike in Notting Hill. He should reprise that character. :-)

I don’t know Electro maybe or Vulture, but since this is all set in “Ultimate” Spider-TEEN land, I keep vowing to not see it.

Although I’m still curious to see what Phony Sony are up to.

  3. That line about “warmth and rage” makes me lean towards Conners since that would fit with who he is with the Lizard as well. Of course, they write the other possible villains as being somewhat sympathetic at first if they choose to like with Doc Ock.

  4. My guess is Connors/ Lizard, Electro or Smythe

  5. Fassbender too old for electro and Ifans isn’t no sir looks alone Ifan look at least 8-10 older if anyone Ifans should be playing Vulture or Lizard

    • “warmth and rage” “complex relationships with villains”, that makes me think of three spidey villains off the bat. Curt connor, morbius, or even norman osborn. hoping not osborn though cuz he was already used, although i could see Rhys as the ultimate spiderman version of Norman really well!

  6. I think it is going to be Vulture or Electro. It’s not the Lizard (Curt Connors) since Peter Parker is in High School during this reboot, Connors was his College professor. I honestly believe it’s going to be Vulture as the main villain, but I hope it’s Electro instead.

  7. I don’t understand some people’s weird casting ideas on here. This guy looks exactly like Cletus Cassidy hands down. Mind you,he might be somebody else but look at that smile and hair, he looks like a serial killer and looks like the actual Cletus Cassidy comic book character.

    • “Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

There is nothing warm about Cletus Cassidy, at all. Based on that comment I’m leaning towards Electro but I would love for Carnage to be in it.

      • @ Alex What “warmth” is there about Elektro besides him burning someone to a crisp with electricity?

        • He started out with a normal life and loving mother. He wanted a normal life a few times but got suckered into crime. There’s some warmth there, I’m sure. On the other hand, Cassidy has been insane his entire life and kills for fun. Electro just wants money. Hence, there is nothing warm about Cassidy.

          • Meh,pretty much the same as SandMan’s redeemable qualities.

  8. With a mustache i rather think hed make a good professer miles warren Aka… The Jackle! yeah i know every one else wants the lizard or electro but i think this villain would fit in well with the whole teen scene spidey!

    • The Jackle…Whom.. That could work and it would inevitably lead to The Lizard or Morbius.

  9. I think Electro would be the best choice as far as cannon, especially if they took the look of Ultimate (Which seems to be their source material), the golden age Electro always looks a bit too comical to be taken seriously.

Casting Ifans as Curt Connors is just too much too soon, there was so much build up to lizard in the previous three films that anything even remotely based around the Lizard would be seen as Webb trying to prove he is as good as Raimi, if anything I want proof that he is better. A lot better.

  10. My vote is for Electro (Ultimate style)

  11. HAHAHA this is the guy from the replacements?! haha
I honestly ONLY see him as vulture. I mean the guy is ver tall and lanky other than that I don’t really have a clue. Defintely NOT vemom. I think that they might go with vulture- which Raimi woudl take as a slap in the face- because I think they are going to go with a new villain that was not used in the prior films and he is teh only one that adds up to me at this point.

I really wish they just let Raimi do Spidey 4. So sad

  12. Everybody run in fear of… TERRIBLE TEETH MAN!!!

  13. What about Scorpion? He starts out as just a regular guy who dons the Scorpion suit to make some money but slowly goes insane from the process that gave him his powers. This would mean a lot of J. Jonah Jameson as he is the one who paid Mac Gargan to undergo the process. I’m all for more J.J.J.

  14. They can cast whoever they want, but money is still going to be on this being a big stinking pile of manure.

  15. Do we need a reboot of the Green Goblin to tie into a later death of Gwen Stacy. The end of the movie could do something novel in this day and age and not kill off the villain. Then bring him back in a couple of movies for Amazing Spiderman 121-122.

  16. Ha, ha, ha….
    It’s so obvious.
    Rhys is playing Electro.
Look at Ditko’s demented-lineman-turned-villian sketches from the early issues.
Rhys looks like no one else! Perfect fit.

  17. Mark Millar has just announced on twitter he’s playing The Lizard.

    • Rhys Ifans is playing him…not Mark Millar

  18. If the villian is Morbius, due to the Twilight vampire love fest that seems to be taking place, I’m going to cry. :(

  19. Ryan ifans could be playing Electro or The Scorpion as if you watch Adrian on Little Nicky he is most devious and Crafty and has the attitude but if he is The Scorpion he may need to buff up but he seems more like electro due to the fact that Matt Dillon has attitude but as electro he is also devious and Crafty and a tough one to handle in a fight due being both the brains and having electricity as his weapon but in the end Spiderman still wins by finding and using electro’s weakiness in order to save New York.
