Zooey Deschanel Rumored To Join Spider-Man Reboot

Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) might not be the only attractive young lady that turns Peter Parker’s head in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot – and no, we’re not backtracking on the “no Mary Jane” promise again.

Word is that Zooey Deschanel may reunite with her 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb for the webslinger’s new movie, which officially shifts into production mode beginning next month.

Deschanel would reportedly star in the Spider-Man reboot as Elizabeth “Betty” Brant, the assistant to Peter’s fast-talking, hard-edged boss J. Jonah Jameson at the Daily Bugle. Actress Elizabeth Banks dyed her blonde locks brown to play the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, but Miss Brant was never a major player in those films. Showbiz Spy indicates that that could change in Webb’s reboot and claims that the director has “big plans” for the character and “wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey fits the bill perfectly. The role is hers if she wants it.”

The female half (naturally) of the musical duo She & Him, Deschanel is a charismatic actress who delivered memorable performances in films like Almost Famous, Elf, and Webb’s Summer indie rom-com (see what we did there?), among others. She would be a welcome addition to the Spider-Man reboot cast, which recently added Sally Field and Martin Sheen to its ranks as well.

What exactly are these “big plans” that Webb has for Miss Brant? The character was romantically involved with Peter Parker a handful of times in the original Spider-Man comics, but things never seemed to work out between those two crazy kids (supervillains and Peter’s hero duties always tended to get in the way). Will the reboot set Betty up as a future love interest for Mr. Parker? Or might she have more of a platonic relationship with Peter in future Spider-Man installments?

Miss Bryant will definitely appear in the webslinger’s new movie, regardless of whether or not Deschanel plays her. A larger role for the character would help the reboot further distinguish itself from Raimi’s Spider-Man and provide some additional personal drama for Peter to deal with – and he can never have enough of that, right?

What do you think of the latest Spider-Man casting rumor?

  1. What if Clive Owen played as Doc Ock (if he’s in the new trilogy)?

  2. Agh i cant stand Zooey Deschanel! Ive seen her in Yes Man, Weeds, Happening, 50o Days, Bridge to terabithia even, and she does the worst British accent in those makeup commercials. Its just something about how she acts exactly the same in every film meaning shes loved for being, i dunno herself? I can name dozens of young actresses who can play her roles and other roles way better. Shes beautiful and i love her eyes and she has a great personality but look at Amanda Seyfried or Rachel Macadams or Ellen Paige or Carey Mulligan or Bryce Dallas Howard and compare the ACTING. And even Emma Stone whos younger has some pretty good acting chops. I dunno man.

  3. I love Zooey! Anyone who can sing “I’m not your late night booty call” with such a sweet, pure voice is awesome in my book. :) But then again, I am a sucker for stupid humor (Will Ferrel, Jim Carey, etc).
Seriously, though – love her voice… And I enjoy her acting (Sadly, I don’t think anything could have saved The Happening.)

    • YES MAN FTW!

  4. I could stare at her eyes for hours. Oh, she acts? :D

  5. i like her but HATE the idea of a reboot for a movie that is only 10 years old.

    • It is a bit ridiculous rebooting after only 10 years…

    • Hulk was rebooted only 5 years after Ang Lee’s film, sot it’s not “too soon” like everyone keeps saying.

      • I thought that was kinda strange too – only 5 years and a reboot? But no big – I love SM and other comic book movies. I’m hoping it will be good – I want to like it! :)

  6. yeah lets not reboot instead lets have the fourth Spidey film with The Vulture and Felicia Hardy as the Vulturess.
Thats what we were possibly looking at if Raimi had not quit when he did .
I weould rather take my chances with this reboot then gamble that they were going to follow up SM3 with another disasterous script.

  7. Great for “Spider-Man”. Bad for Zooey Deschanel.

After watching her play more adult characters, I think “Spider-Man” would make a horrible addition to her resume. “Spider-Man” is not good enough for her talents and future.

Zooey can do way better than “Spider-Man”.

  8. I hope that she doesnt look at it that way.

  9. I’m also of the camp that could stare at her for hours, given the opportunity.

she’s so awesome, I can even suffer through 2 hours of Will Ferret (uh, Ferrell) just to see her in Elf.

  10. The thing I hate most about this reboot is that Sony could have EASILY just replaced Raimi with Webb, and still call it Spider-man 4. But no, they had to erase what Raimi did and start over b/c they want to make it their own. To make it worse, they used the story THEY wanted for SM4 in this reboot. Sony is basically using this film as a big “f you” to Raimi.

    • Well said and I agree completely..

    • Raimi’s original idea for SM4 sounded horrible. Vultress? really?

Coupled with the fact that raimi completely and utterly ruined norman osbourne and venom, arguably two of the greatest spidey villains of all time, not to mention the redeeming villain says sorry and saves the day angle which he used 3 times.

Im with sony in giving raimi the big middle finger. Best thing (nay, the only thing I liked) about his trilogy was bruce campbell

When this is out we will all (hopefully) look back at raimis trilogy and laugh, much like comparing the 90′s batman films with the current ones

      • We dont’ know if that was really what Raimi had intended for the movie as it was only RUMORED (meaning it hasn’t been confirmed or denied). That could easily have been Sony making all that up for them to look about Raimi’s departure. Hell, the idea of a Vulturess could have been Sony’s, and put all the blaim on Raimi.

  11. The story in SM 4 wasnt rumored to have anything to do with the Lizard.

    • Yes. Sony originally wanted The Lizard, but Raimi wanted The Vulture..
