Now that Andrew Garfield is set as the new Peter Parker, the search has begun for an actress to play the love interest – who will NOT be Mary Jane – in the Spider-Man reboot.
Director Marc Webb will return to the high school days of nerd-turned-superhero Peter Parker in his 3D Spider-Man movie, which will reportedly be significantly edgier and more “realistic” in nature than Sam Raimi’s blockbuster movies about the character.
The other twist in the new tale of the webslinger is that he will not be craving the attention of iconic, red-haired beauty Mary Jane Watson – at least not in the first film. Whether the object of Parker’s desire will be Gwen Stacy (who was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3) or an entirely new character has not yet been revealed.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) is reportedly one of the first known candidates who has officially dropped out of the running for the part. Those who are rumored to still be contenders include actress Lily Collins (Priest), Ophelia Lovibond (London Boulevard), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Imogen Poots (Fright Night), and Emma Roberts (Scream 4).

L to R: Collins, Lovibond, Palmer, Poots, and Roberts
All of these actresses are up-and-comers that are youthful enough in appearance to be convincing in the role of a high schooler – by Hollywood standards, at least. With the exception of Palmer, none of them bear too strong a resemblance to Gwen Stacy from the comic books, though one of them could end up dying their hair blonde for that (possible) role, much like Kirsten Dunst dyed her hair red for the part of Mary Jane in Raimi’s Spider-Man.
Nothing is guaranteed at this point and, when all is said and done, an entirely different actress might end up with the role. The casting drama won’t reach the heights of Captain America but a final decision will likely take a few weeks, so strap yourselves in.
Production on the Spider-Man reboot begins this December, with a tentative release date scheduled for July 3rd, 2012.

It’ll be Gwen Stacy then. As it should be, they should have killed off MJ in the second of the Raimi films, might have made for something faintly resembling drama.
I vote Emma Roberts. She’s cute.
They might of Killed off MJ in Spidey 4 as rumored leaving room for Felicia Hardy as his love interest while after grieving the loss of MJ. I was lookin forward to that stuff for the 4th film. Oh well, Petey back in high school Again wooohooo.
Spiderman’s/Peter Parkers love interests in the books have been many:
Liz Allen (marries Harry Osbourne)
Gwen Stacy *
Mary Jane Watson (She’s out)
Debra Whitman
Michele Gonzales
Felicia Hardy*
Carlie Cooper*
Angelica Jones
I put an asterik by the most likely candidates but in all honesty it will be Gwen Stacy..
You forgot Betty Brant, but very astute Green.
I don’t care what anybody says this is shaping up to be a plus so far. That is if they go with Gwen Stacy. My vote is for Imogen. Just get a good villian and a strong supporting cast and I think the franchise could redeem itself. So far I like the direction that this is going in.
If that’s a shortlist then I’m for Ms. Palmer.
Gwen or Felicia. Either one works for me.
Oh by the way, what’s this “realistic” stuff, anyway? You’re filming the pic in 3D aren’t you? Good way of keeping it real!!
Well that’s dumb.
The Three most likely from the origins stand point are Felicia Hardy Betty Brant (JJJ’s Secretary in the first 3 films)or the More likely Gwen Stacy it would be great to see her die the way she did in the comics but as it was already used in the first film (incorrectly with the wrong female, and with out the FREAKING DEATH that shaped the majority of his guilt for the following years,) And as far as it being realistic, uh…. Spider-Man????
i for one wanted this reboot after part 2 i could do w/o the 3d i think its a gimick but Marc Webb is the man 500 days of summer was an amazing movie he’s a fan of the web-head and i think casted a great up and coming youg actor in the rold of spidey/parker so im all about this reboot…(oh btw…collins or roberts for me.)
WHAT? no mary jane?
Oh well….
The death of Gwen Stacy storyline was one of the top five best stories in Spidey history and yet every incarnation of Spider-man (e.g. cartoons and movies) has ignored the story and the character completely.
I hope they go with Gwen Stacy and maybe Felicia Hardy for an intersting love triagle, but I’m tired of Mary Jane and hope she doesn’t become a love interest until movie three of the trilogy(?)
… F!$% Sony and Marc Webb!!! This reboot sucks period. I can’t see Andrew Garfield as Spidey/Peter Parker. He doesn’t look geeky enough.. In my mind, the old movies were perfect with the cast and Sam Raimi as Director. Sony just wants their money-grubbing hands more in the Spider-Man movies!
No MJ?! How could you start a “reboot” and not have MJ?
By following the comics.
MJ wasn’t there from the start, plain and simple.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Spiderman existed WITHOUT Mary Jane.
Some people might ask how you could start a reboot and not have Gwen Stacy, she’s just as important a part of his past as Uncle Ben.
I dunno…after the last film I’m personally kinda “spidey’d” out, but that could change with a good story and direction. I will say I’m cool with not having to watch Kirsten Dunst in the series anymore. She was brilliant in Interview with the vampire, but as Mary Jane I found her forgettable and never really pulled off the sizzle of the “MJ” in the comic boox…
Just my two cents worth, seeing as they’re intent on rebooting I’ll hope for something genuinely entertaining…
They didn’t say no MJ, they just said she’s not the love interest in this particular film. She could still be a background character.
I hope MJ is in like a cameo or something, then a love triangle in the second…
Who cares? I don’t know anyone seeing this movie. The fact the Andrew Garfield isn’t American and he’s playing one of the most American characters of all time is unacceptable. The studio couldn’t find a talented actor from the US? Is it really that hard?
Who cares if Garfield isn’t Ameracan? It’s not like they’re making the character English and setting the film in London or anything. As long as Garfield captures the essence of the character, then that’s all. Although, I don’t think Garfield looks the part.
Nationality or race shouldn’t matter in film. MCD was The Kingpin, but did a fantastic job (IMO). Bale is English, and man seem to love him as Batman. Hell, Superman was always portrayed as a white guy, but Routh wasn’t, and there wasn’t any backlash on that. All that matters is the actor capturing the ESSENCE of the character.
i hope this ultimately doesnt get made
I am p!$$@d off that
Wolverine was played by an Autralian and he is Canadian
Batman was played by a Welshman and he AMerican
Iceman was played by Canadian and he is American
Colossus was played by a Canadian and he is Russian
Mr Fantastic was played by a Welchman and he is AMerican
Thor is Scandanavian and he was played by an Australian
Storm was played by an AMerican and she is Kenyan
Professor Xavier was played by a Brit and he is AMerican
Nightcrawler was played by a Scotsman and he is Bavarian/German
I’m sure there are many more I can think of but I think you get my point.
WTH does where the actor is from as long as he does a good job..now I’m waiting for all the Captain AMerica arguements to start again.
Exactly! There’s a reason it’s called acting.
@ greenknight333
Points well made. Acting is all about portraying a character faithfully and accurately with conviction regardless of nationality.
Movie studio employees come from all sorts of backgrounds as do film crews. Actors are no exception. They get hired to get a job done.
I’m really not all that interested in this film. I’m hoping one day to see a mature realistic treatment of the web slinger based on the longest running MARVEL title “Amazing Spiderman”.
In terms of Peter’s first love interest it has to be Gwen Stacy and I’ll cast my vote for Teresa Palmer since she hails from my home town.
Yes, but are they looking for a person to play Electro yet?
More than likely it’ll be Gwen as spidey’s love intrest not on board with this reboot waitin to see what the teaser trailer looks like hope he uses mechanical web shooters in this reboot I liked the 3 previous spidey films but the whole organic webshooters took away some of the origanal elements that makes spidey who he is as for the villian hope it’s the lizard
I actually loved the idea of organic webbing. The idea of Parker being able to create web shooters seems way too farfetched to me, even in a movie about Spider-man. I don’t care if it’s in the comics, some things that work in comics don’t work in a live-action film.
You know at one point, while watching movie number 2 I thought that they were going to add the mechanical web shooters as a back up, seeing that his powers were oscillating, but it never happened. I can’t imagine a single source with as much as he uses this ability, whether it’s an organic source or man made one. Its somewhat unpredictability should be part of the story. Heroes and villains should always be concerned with resources. It’s one of the little things that gives them a connection to reality and humanity.
I still think the reboot for those that have watched the Raimi versions will be kind of boring because of the rehash factor. It’s just too soon, time wise, to be going over this stuff Again!
YEAAHHHH, Gwen Stacy is better than Mary Jane
While I agree it might be Gwen Stacy, as there are still tons of arguments going on even now about who really was Peter Parker’s “one true love” – Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson – and this change of direction might be a fun way to remind people about Gwen Stacy -
It might be Betty Brant too. If they’re going to start chronologically in Peter Parker’s love life, Betty Brant was his first love.
I’d prefer Gwen Stacey as the female role in the movie as well.
Vic
Well after all she was Peters first love.
I don’t have much interest in this film at the moment, but it’s interesting that they seem to be going with someone other than Mary-Jane immediately being the love interest which is true to the material. I would be quite happy if this turned out well.
Agree that Gwen Stacy would make the most sense. This could also set up a future film where they could do the whole “Death of Gwen Stacy” story. Of course, that would mean introducing the Green Goblin again or having it done with a different villain.
Regarding the whole thing with webbing, I recall in one of the forms of media that the reason Peter knew how to create the web formula had to do with him sort of naturally knowing how to create such a thing from the spider-dna in his system or something along those lines. Granted, that probably doesn’t make much sense and the organic shooters probably make more sense I suppose.
Yeah Sean it seems redundant and I just can’t make myself get into it. I believe I have a better than 50% chance of being right that people will be dissatisfied with Garfield, either as Parker or Spider-man. He physically seems too tall and lanky and he has a rubber face goofy look that he can make that can really potentially mess up a scene big time. The worst thought is that maybe Webb has seen it and likes it! That will forever turn me off to this series of movies and will ruin Spider-man movies for I.M.O. the rest of my lifetime anyway. Of course if it bombs because of Garfield perhaps Marvel will get it back drop him and do an excellent follow on movie…
I think it’s that it just seems too soon after the last Spider-man film, which was rather underwhelming all things considered. Of course, there wasn’t that much time between the two Hulk films and a decent amount between Batman films.
Of course, I’d be very happy if the film turned out great and wish them all the luck.
I think you’re being a bit hard and Garfield and overreacting a bit. I’m not really sold on him either, but I’m willing to give him a shot.
I understand that point of view but you know Spider-man has probably run a real close second to Superman in the number of movies, comic, and cartoon iterations. A lot of returns, reboots, reimaginations, and new introductions that it’s rather dull. The Hulk is not quite with these two in the number of shows done with him. He’s up there but he hasn’t caught up. But if “TIH” would have been a reboot instead of a continuation with his origin told all over again, I would have passed on it even with Norton in it…
He’s definitely up there with Superman and Batman for the amount of different media portrayals he has had. He probably has the monopoly for animated series I think.
I know the Hulk really isn’t up there, but I needed an example of a reboot happening not too long after the last film. And wasn’t TIH a reboot really? I don’t seem to recall it having any ties to the Hulk film and they did sort of do the origin in the opening and actually discussed it a few times, but didn’t make the movie about that. If they had, it would have been a bit silly.
What little info I’ve seen for this film seems to indicate we’ll skip seeing the origin other than a possible quick flashback or mention, which really is the way to go. Spider-Man has probably one of the most well known origins out there. Having the film start with him already being Spider-Man also sort of helps with whatever villain they decide to choose as well.
I like mary jane…not the character… anybody else want funions and water too?
Hmmm… yeah still sounding like a dumb movie. I hate remakes! Especially when it’s of a movie that came out less than 5 years ago. (Spider-man 3)
I think it will be Gwen Stacy & I vote for Teresa Palmer to be her. Why? She is cute just like Gwen & she dose look like her a bit. Have you seen Palmer in The sorcerers apprentice? You get realy into her charecter, because she is so fantastic!. I think that Gwen should die and then put MJ in spiderman 2 or 3 later on. Let the movie en with petter opening the door and MJ saying “wow tiger, it looks like you just hit the Jackpot”… Something like that
scrap it and do a Carnage movie instead
Why exactly? How can a character like Carnage carry a movie on his own? What precisely is the appeal of him anyway? I mean I like his design myself, but that’s about it.
It seems unlikely that his film will even cross the $400,000,000 mark in gross revenue. I’d be damned to see it beat Sam Raimi’s Spidey.
Mary Jane is overrated Emma Roberts could play her but that’s about it beside Mary Jane is peter’s adult love interst this is a younger version so go with another girl like Felicia Hardy great character and doesn’t have to live directly across from peter so he doesn’t have to gawk at her from across the cloths line so anyways yeah Emma Roberts for her role too yes she is a cutie and bad guy wise let’s see someone we have never seen on screen yet lizard is good vulter, electro, rhino, maybe a young version of the kingpin?
