Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: No Way Home has two post-credits scenes, so we break down what they mean for the future of the wall-crawling superhero. No Way Home is the third solo Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and works to close out the character's trilogy - though Sony is apparently keen to have Tom Holland return for Spider-Man 4, 5 and 6 and keep the story going. But until a continuation is officially announced, No Way Home works to wrap up the MCU's Spider-Man story so far.

Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up immediately after the events of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which saw Peter Parker's identity as the superhero outed to the whole world. To make matters worse, Spider-Man was framed for the murder of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). In No Way Home, Peter's life suffers as he's plagued with accusations of his involvement in the attack on London in Far From Home. Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help, asking for a spell that will make everyone forget he's Spider-Man, but when it goes awry, characters from other universes begin appearing in the MCU. The Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scenes set the stage for No Way Home and now the new film's credits stingers similarly pave the way for upcoming movies.

Both of Spider-Man: No Way Home's two post-credits scenes work to set up future movies in the MCU. Now that the latest Spidey installment is out in theaters, we explain what happens in the Spider-Man: No Way Home post-credits scenes, and what they mean for the MCU characters' futures. So one last time: SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Venom Returns Back To Sony's Universe In Spider-Man: No Way Home's Mid-Credits Scene

Venom and Spider-Man In Let There Be Carnage Post Credits Scene

The Spider-Man: No Way Home mid-credits scene shows Eddie Brock aka Venom (Tom Hardy) in the MCU, grappling with the sheer number of superheroes in the universe while getting drunk at a bar in Mexico. This directly follows the Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene, which showed Venom being transported to the MCU and seeing the news report of Peter Parker being outed as Spider-Man. As explained by Doctor Strange in No Way Home, the spell transported people who knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man to the MCU. This means that either Eddie or Venom knew Spider-Man's identity and given Venom was the one to say, "That guy," when watching the news report, it's likely he was the one to know, while Eddie was taken along for the ride. As to how Venom knew Peter Parker when Eddie didn't, that can be explained by the symbiote hive knowledge Venom referenced before he and Eddie were transported to the MCU.

Before Eddie can travel to New York and confront Spider-Man as he plans to do, he's sent back to his home universe in the No Way Home credits scene. However, a little bit of Venom goo is left on the bar after Eddie's gone, indicating a piece of the alien symbiote has managed to stay in the MCU. Despite this, Eddie has still gone back to his home universe, meaning whenever he next appears - whether in Venom 3 or another movie - it'll likely be in the universe where he was originally introduced. Venom, on the other hand, may still be able to make the trip to New York and confront Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 4 Could See Peter Parker Infected With Venom

Tom Holland Spider-Man 4 Pitch

As seen in the first Venom movie, the symbiotes can travel around the world by attaching themselves to human hosts, which Venom could do after Spider-Man: No Way Home and make his way to New York City. There, he could attach himself to Spider-Man, giving Holland's Peter Parker the black suit he wears in the Secret Wars comic book story. This black suit appeared in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, with Tobey Maguire overtaken by the Venom symbiote in Spider-Man 3, before it eventually went to Eddie Brock (Topher Grace).

That particular movie wasn't very well-received, but part of Venom being left behind in the MCU means that a future Spider-Man movie could try again to adapt the black suit from the comics. Given how positively received the MCU Spider-Man movies have been, it's possible they could do a better job of tackling that particular storyline with Holland's Peter Parker. But, it's unclear whether Venom might make it to New York City by the time of Spider-Man 4 or if that's something they'll save for a future movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home's Post-Credits Scene Is A Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

Doctor Strange tries to contain a spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The second Spider-Man: No Way Home credits scene is the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, featuring multiple scenes from the upcoming MCU sequel. Based on the trailer, the movie deals with the fallout from Strange's failed spell in No Way Home and its impacts on the multiverse, which seem to have had unintended consequences that Stephen didn't anticipate. But the biggest reveal in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer is Strange Supreme, the evil Doctor Strange introduced in Marvel's What If...? Disney+ series. In What If...?, Strange Supreme became wildly powerful in order to save his Christine Palmer from dying, but because it was an Absolute Point in time that couldn't be changed, he ended up destroying his universe. He then helped the Guardians of the Multiverse to defeat Infinity Ultron and was last seen agreeing to watch over Zola/Killmonger who'd been trapped in a pocket dimension.

Though Strange Supreme was redeemed in the What If...? season 1 finale, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer positions him as a villain with the line, "the greatest threat to our universe is you." Given the power Strange Supreme wields, it's not difficult to see why Wong, who's now the Sorcerer Supreme, would be wary of the different version of Strange. But whether Doctor Strange ends up fighting Strange Supreme, or they team up to take on some other threat, remains to be seen.

Christine Palmer Is Getting Married... Not To Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdams in Doctor Strange

In the MCU, Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) has a much different fate to the one from Strange Supreme's universe, since she didn't die on the night of his car accident. In Doctor Strange, they were already exes prior to his accident, and she helped him try to save the Ancient One. They remained friends instead of getting back together. Now, the Multiverse of Madness trailer teases Christine will be getting married - to someone who isn't Stephen. However, Stephen will be in attendance in the audience, so their relationship is clearly still friendly. Given the inclusion of Strange Supreme in Multiverse of Madness, it's possible there's more to Christine's role than her simply getting married, but the trailer only teases her wedding to an unknown character.

Wanda Maximoff Is Called In To Help Fix The Multiverse Of Madness

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch in WandaVision Episode 9 Post Credits Scene

The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer features a couple shots of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who was last seen studying the Darkhold and trying to learn how to control her Chaos Magic. When the Doctor Strange sequel finds her, she's living peacefully on a farm/orchard, and is fully aware she made mistakes in Westview. However, Doctor Strange isn't concerned with Westview and instead asks her for help with the multiverse. In a later shot, she's dressed in her Scarlet Witch outfit and is hovering above a circle of candles, though it's unclear where she is.

It's been speculated that Scarlet Witch could be the villain in Multiverse of Madness, but this first trailer certainly paints her as more of a hero - or, at least, an ally of Doctor Strange. Previously, Olsen confirmed Wanda can travel between universes, making her a helpful ally in trying to deal with the multiverse. Of course, Wanda is clearly still dealing with the fallout from Westview and losing both Vision and her sons, which could send her down a darker path, especially if she comes into contact with Strange Supreme, who literally destroyed his universe trying to save the person he loved. Still, what exactly happens with Wanda in Multiverse of Madness remains to be seen, but based on the trailer, she teams up with Doctor Strange to help with the multiverse.

Mordo Returns As A Villain In Doctor Strange 2 With A New Look

Mordo What If Evil Doctor Strange SR

At the end of the first Doctor Strange movie, Mordo left the Masters of the Mystic Arts and set off on a journey to protect the balance of the world by tracking down rogue sorcerers and divesting them of their powers. In the Doctor Strange post-credits scene, Mordo confronts a man using magic to walk after he was paralyzed and ends up taking the man's power away. His mission puts him at odds with Doctor Strange and, especially, Strange Supreme. It's no doubt that Mordo would see Strange Supreme as a threat to not only the MCU but the entire multiverse. Whether that makes him an ally or an enemy of Doctor Strange remains to be seen. If Doctor Strange were to team up with Strange Supreme, that would no doubt make him an enemy of Mordo. But the question remains whether Strange Supreme really is the biggest threat to the multiverse, or if there's a greater threat Doctor Strange will face in Multiverse of Madness.

America Chavez Is Key To The Multiverse In Doctor Strange 2

The only completely new character introduced in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer is America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), though she doesn't have any lines and only appears in a handful of shots. She's only identifiable by the denim jacket she wears that has a star on the back. She's first shown in what appears to be the Sanctum Santorum, and then again on a city street being saved by Doctor Strange, who cuts a bus in half that would've hit America.

The trailer doesn't give much indication of how the character fits into Multiverse of Madness, but in the comics, America Chavez has the ability to open portals between universes, allowing her to travel the multiverse. Since both America and Wanda have that ability, it's unclear why Doctor Strange may need both their help, but if Wanda were to refuse or betray Strange, he may need to turn to America. Or, he may simply need multiple people who have the ability to travel the multiverse. Given so little footage of America was revealed, her full role in the film is largely unknown. A second Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer will no doubt reveal more from the movie, but for now, this teaser attached as the Spider-Man: No Way Home credits scene did offer an idea of what to expect from the MCU movie.
